We have strived to make the book resemble a magazine, a year-end issue, summing up the highlights of the year. Last year, as we were brainstroming ideas for the '85 Arcadian, we decided that our yearbook should contain more pictures that included all four classes and also more articles to serve as a written record for our ailing memories when we re old and gray. You will also notice ads scattered about, just as a magazine would. We hope we have achieved our goal and that you will find this year's yearbook enjoyable. Cheryl A. Bowker Thomas R. May 2 The staff of the 1985 Arcadian and the Class of 1985 would like to dedicate this year's yearbook to a great teacher and friend. The dedication goes to Mr. Ed Doyle. Mr. Doyle graduated in June of 1969 from Wayne Central School. Then he attended SUNY at Oswego for the next four years and graduated in 1973. In September of 1973 he started teaching Graphics Art at NHS. Mr. Doyle has taken additional courses at Nazareth College, SUNY at Oswego, Syracuse University, and SUNY at Geneseo. He has worked since 1969 at Pitts Pontiac in Webster as a salesman part time and summers. Mr. Doyle is not only a fine teacher, but a friend to every one he meets. The students feel like he understands them and that he wants them to learn and have fun learning. Mr. Doyle's name always comes up when students talk about their favorite teacher. Thank you Mr. Doyle for making our high school years so memorable. Cheryl A. Bowker 3 4 The long-awaited event is finally here. After four grueling years at Newark Senior High School, the Seniors are finally leaving the hallowed halls behind them and are off to face the real world. This ambitious class began its first year at Newark under the study leadership of three outstanding freshmen. The class enthusiastically participated in the tradition of freshman Slave Day. In the sophomore year of the Class of '85, the leadership was provided by Karla Chandler (President), Kim Lannon (Vice-President), and Kelly Wage (Secretary Treasurer). The activities of the class proved to the rest of the school that this was a class to be watched! Members took an active role in every aspect of life at Newark High. This tradition of excellence continued into the junior year in which Cheryl Palermo, Paul Leone, and Kelly Wage guided the class to an extremely successful fruit sale. Though a small group, the junior class beat the previous class amount of fruit sold. This outstanding effort by the Class of 85 filled the coffers for the Senior Trip. The theme for the Junior Prom was Stairway to Heaven” and was the perfect backdrop for a perfect evening. Stephanie Lagenor was crowned Prom Princess. The hectic pace continued for this energetic class with PSAT's in the beginning of the year and SAT's just around the corner. The Seniors began their final year at NHS with the annual Magazine Drive to earn more money for the Senior Trip. Rick Boerman (President), Paul Leone (Vice-President), and Gina Shipley (Secretary Treasurer) were elected new class officers. The theme of Homecoming was Foreign Countries. As always the Class of '85 showed their social and creative ability in their representation of A Roman Toga Party.” At Homecoming Activities, Roxanne Tack was crowned Homecoming Queen. She was escorted by Jim Thompson. The Senior Class of '85 enjoyed the traditional class trip to Washington, D.C. and the Senior Dinner Dance. In June, the Class of '85 will graduate from good ole NHS” to the future. No matter where their paths may take them, the Class of '85 will always look upon their years at NHS as really great times and treasure all their memories. Best of luck to the class of '85 and may your futures be bright! I just want to thank everybody in Newark and Newark High School who has made my year here so great and meaningful. I want to thank NHS's staff and the teachers who have been understanding and helpful, my friends who have been a support and have made me feel at home. I also want to thank my host family, the Rhodehamels, and my Area representatives, Arlene and Charlie Muphy, for everything they have done for me. 1 will always remember my year in Newark as something bright and great in my life. I had so much fun together with you all. You have taught me so much! I've learned about the Americans, the American culture, and your school system, and even if a lot of things are different from Sweden. I love it here and I will always consider the U.S. as my second home. Love, Susanne Hi! My name is Carin Kolmodin and I am from a town called Katrineholm in Sweden, Europe. I have spent a fascinating, different, and exciting year here in Newark, New York with you. I have seen so much and it has been alot of fun but also a hard time being away from home. I have gotten to know myself and this country’s culture and people. It is a great experience to have living in a different country for a year. I hope my presence here has made you aware about the world around you and the different cultures that exists in it. If you ever have an opportunity to visit Sweden come and say hello and I will show you my country that is beautiful, too. Love, Carin Hi Babe: I'm Martha Vanzquez and I came from a big city called Monterrey, NL in Mexico. 1 came for a whole year to the U.S. to learn your customs and share cultures with you. Even though I have gained about 10 pounds I love your food, everything . .. and junk food. Living here has been a new experience for me. There are lots of things that I've never seen before, like snow! I saw my first snow here in Newark and it was very exciting! I also tried cross country skiing and lots of fun things. At first it was hard because I didn't know anybody, but after a while I got to know everybody in school. They all know my expression: Don't tease me — and with the help of all of my friends and the teachers 1 adapted very fast. It was an outstanding experience and an awesome year here! Thank you all for your friendship, sharing, and caring. I will have lots of memories in my heart that I will keep forever and ever. Thank you very much and don't tease me! (Guess why I put Hi Babe? Because that's how I use to greet everyone in the halls.) With lots of love, Martha 26 My doctor warned me about this! Just who do you think you are talking to? Burt. I hate to scare you but. . . The team was Finger Lakes East Champion for the 4th year running and kept their unbeaten streak alive with 33 consecutive victories. Though they were runners-up at Sectionals, some exceptional performances were recorded by: Anne-Marie Venoski (Section 5 Class B shot put champion with a school record), Gaellyn Simpson (Section 5 Class B 800m Champion), Maureen Holla (Section 5 Class B 1500m walk champion and 3rd in the NYS Intersectional meet) and the Section 5 champion 1600m relay team of Debbie Derks, Laurie Krueger, Maureen Holla and Gaellyn Simpson. Some of the highlights of the season were their victory over Mynderse and taking Geneva to the last minutes before losing by a single goal. The lacrosse program is constantly improving under Coach Van Etten, so look for great teams in the future. Boys’ JV Lacrosse Much work and effort went into the J.V. season. Ivan Morales had 1st team All-League honors as an outfielder on the Finger Lakes East All-Star team. An exciting point of the season was playing Sodus at Silver Stadium in Rochester. Coach Henry feels that with only 2 seniors graduated, the 1985 team will have an excellent nucleus of young players which can build into a great team. He anticipates that the 1985 Reds will be very competitive and will be challengers for the league title. Boys’ JV Baseball RECORD WON LOST 8 7 Row 1: B. Bierly, M. Demer, S. Rowlands, B. With long hours of practice and a desire for success many are awarded the bronze, silver, or gold. The 1984 Winter Olympics in Yugoslavia saw the United States win four gold and four silver medals. Scott Hamilton won a gold in the Mens' Figure Skating. Steve Mahre won the gold medal in the Giant Slalom Skiing event. = = £ i iz Chicago Bears' Walter Payton as he carries the ball on his way to setting the record for rushing. He broke the record at 12,312 yards held by Jim Brown. The United States did extremely well in the Los Angeles Summer Olympics winning 83 gold medals, 61 silver and 30 bronze. Carl Lewis won four gold medals in the track and field events. Mary Lou Retton won the all-around gold medal and led the gymnastic team to a silver medal. In addition, the Reds placed 2nd in the Newark Tournament and 3rd at the Pal-Mac Tournament. Coach Binggeli felt that the team improved very much towards the end of the season. He also remarked that because of a lack of experience and wrestlers, many costly points were lost. One player of special note, was Jeff Johnson, who reached state qualifiers and was the only senior on the squad. The Junior Varsity Wrestling team had a record of 7 wins, and 8 losses. Coach Fisher said that the team had a lot of talent, but was hurt by injuries and a lack of wrestlers. WINTER SPORTS Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Our Girl's Varsity Volleyball team had a rough start. We lost many hard-fought matches in the fifth game. Our biggest problem was inconsistency. However, with dedication and a lot of concentration, we pulled together as a team and advanced to sectionals. Overall, the year was one of determination and tremendous improvement. He vowed not to raise taxes and ran on his own record of the previous four years. (AP World Wide Photos) Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale made history when he chose a woman, Geraldine Ferraro as his vice-presidential running mate. Mondale and Ferraro were nominated on the Democratic ticket at the party convention in San Francisco in July. He announced early in his campaign that to lower the federal deficit increased taxes would be necessary. (AP World Wide Photos) President Ronald Reagan won re-election with the biggest electoral vote in the nation's history. He won 49 states with 49 percent of the total vote. The photo shows President and Mrs. Reagan at the victory celebration on election night, November 6, 1984. (AP World Wide Photos) The Statue of Liberty celebrated her 98th birthday in 1984 and she began to show her age. The statue was worn from constant pummeling by wind, salt air, and acid rain, and the iron ribbing supporting the copper covering was badly corroded. A two-year restoration began in July 1984. It included a new gold-plated torch. (AP World Wide Photos) Mission specialist Bruce McCandless takes a walk in space in early 1984. In the photo he is seen using the so-called maneuvering unit as he moved away from the Shuttle Challenger during the eight-day space mission. (AP World Wide Photos) After years of civil war, elections were held in El Salvador in 1984. Jose Napoleon Duarte was elected president in what international observers called the most open and free election in that country in 50 years. The photo shows a soldier reading a newspaper at the Rio Lempa checkpoint near El Salvador. The headline was There is Faith in the Electoral Process. (AP Wide World Photos) Princess Diana gave birth to Prince Harry in late 1984. The photo shows Prince Charles, Princess Diana, and their other son, two-year old Prince William. (AP Wide World Photos) 156 Pope John Paul II was a traveling pope in 1984. In May he went to South Korea, Thailand, Papau New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands; in June he went to Switzerland; in September to Canada and in October to Spain, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The photo shows the Pope in Mt. Hagen, Papau New Guinea where he met some of the 200,000 natives that turned out to welcome him in the highland jungle country. (AP Wide World Photos) The United States Marines arrived in Beirut in 1982. Lebanon was torn by civil war and foreign invasion. In 1984 when the Marines left, more than 260 Marines were dead, Lebanon was still at war with most of its territory occupied by foreign troops and its government tottering. The price of President Reagan's commitment was too high and the Marines left Beirut. (AP Wide World Photos) 157 Michael Jackson conducted his so-called Victory Tour to more than a dozen cities. The original ticket policy, which required fans to mail in $120 postal money order for four tickets with no guarantee that they could receive tickets, was shelved after much criticism. (AP Wide World Photos) Robert Duvall received an Oscar for his role as a washed-up country singer who overcomes alcohol in the film Tender Mercies. Shirley MacLaine won for best actress and Jack Nicholson won best supporting actor as an eccentric mother and a pot-bellied ex-astronaut in Terms of Endearment, which also won the best picture award. The best supporting actress Oscar went to Linda Hunt for her role in The Year of Living Dangerously. The photo shows MacLaine and Duvall the night of the Oscars. (AP Wide World Photos) Vanessa Williams was forced to surrender her title as Miss America at the request of pageant officials because she had posed nude for sexually explicit photos. She became the first of 57 Miss Americas to be forced to resign. Suzette Charles, the first runner-up became the 58th Miss America. She crowned Sharlene Wells, Miss Utah, at the Atlantic City Pageant in September. (AP Wide World Photos) CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 1985 THANKS FOR ALL YOUR PATRONAGE...
