NEWARK CENTRAL SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW YORK FOREWORD The Editors and Staff of the 1967 yearbook have endeavored to make the ARCADIAN a successful record of the year's events. We now present it to you the faculty and students of Newark High School. The staff has chosen Emotion” as its theme, which seems only fitting: to capture the events and feelings which have surrounded the year. To the seniors, it is a close to four wonderful •''years and a beginning to a new life. To the juniors, it is the ending to a most hectic but enjoyable year To the sophomores, it is a chance to develop their minds and contribute to the school. To the freshman class, it is a realization of the importance of high school, and the joy of no longer being the underclassmen. DEDICATION The 1967 Arcadian Staff would like to express its gTatitude to a man who has done so much to aid the Newark School System, Mr. Norman R. Kelley. The yearbook staff wishes to dedicate this year’s ARCADIAN to Mr. Kelley, a man who has served as Principal and Superintendent of Schools since 1944. SITTING: Mrs. Margaret LiddLe, Alvaro, Long. MISSING: Grauer. Blake. The feeling’ generated by this year’s Student Government is one of organization and efficiency. The Student Government is the “hub” of school activity and is designed to be a “common link” between the student body and the administration. The Student Council or the “upper house” is the head branch. It is comprised of a president, vice president, secretary, and boy and girl representatives, elected after a vigorous campaign. Class presidents are also a member of this branch government. The chief functions of this governmental branch are the sponsoring of all campaigns, selection of paid assemblies, granting charters to new clubs and monitoring of cafeteria lines. The American Field Service, Foster Parents Plan, and Red Cross drives are also under its direction. This year the Council is trying to increase the spirit within the school especially through Freshman orientation meetings. The other branch of government is the Student Congress or the “lower house”, headed by the Vice President of the Council and has a vice president, secretary, and homeroom representatives. The Congress coordinates the work between the houses. Vice President David Blake.................................... President Steve Bohusz..........................Secretary-Treasurer CLASS OFFICERS CLASS HISTORY As our gang from the Junior High and St. Michael’s merged we became the first Freshman Class to occupy the new wing at the Senior High. Amidst the awesome newness and excitement we elected Jim Morrison as our class president. Our Sophomore year seemed more realistic as we realized the importance of good grades. We also began to join new clubs and participate in various activities. Our class president that year was Karen Vanderbrook; how brave we were to elect a girl!! Bill Bush was chosen as class head during our most eventful Junior year. It was the year we presented our play, “Gaslight,” and our tremendously successful Junior Prom, “Some Enchanted Evening.” We began to feel the pressure of college admissions after taking the National Merit Tests and College Boards. Now we are SENIORS at last, with David Blake as class president. A year for Regents exams, college applications, senior pictures, cap and gown measurements, class day skits, and finally the culmination of all our dreams and efforts, graduation. This is the time we look to the past and ahead to the future with mixed emotions. Regardless of the path we choose for ourselves, we can remember the knowledge, experience, and friends that resulted from our days at N.H.S. 24 Paul Cornelia Thomas Condit Mary Collins Diane Cavanaugh William Clark Thomas DeVries Leonard DeWeerdt William DeWispelaere Patrica DuBois 30 Robert Eckrich Frances Federico Eric Ellsworth Ronald Finewood Mary Ann Ferguson i Benjamin Evangelist Denise Fischette Richard Ferland 31 Timothy Follette Deloris Fredrickson Carol Oambill Keith Frey Joseph Fredej gWr, Kristin Gilbert Judith Grauer Carlos Guzman John Hamelinck Audry Hartnagel Bonnie Hause Beverly Grant George Hardy Ernest Graff , rQJ I t r 1 Judy Heinlein Robert Humphrey 34 James Johnson r. 1 , y j ‘ Terry Keller Richard Johnson Ronald Kreuger Dean Larson 35 Randolph Knapp Mary Langenstein Laurel Kaufman Timothy Lewis Marsha Lenhart Sherry MacWilliams 36 Joslyn Martin Margaret Miller 37 Q ' yy Lu aji yv j£Aj£a. For everyone in my country it is a great experience and undoubtedly the highlight in his life to go to America. I remember all the pains I had to go through in order to get this scholarship But now I have forgotten about the pains because they were worthwhile. First I began to ask myself how I would get along with the American people. I soon found out that I didn’t have to worry about this. My American host family, Mr and Mrs. Gerald Ridley and son Steve, have been doing everything to make this year a successful one for me. But it isn’t my family alone: all people of this wonderful village, the teachers as well as the boys and girls at school have helped me so much to make this year an unforgettable. I come from Central Europe, Austria, not from Australia where the kangaroos are —we have kangaroos only in the zoos. Austria occupies an area of the size of Maine. Because two thirds of our country is transversed by the Alps it has a population of only 7,000.000 people-2.000,000 of which live in the capital Vienna, located on the Blue Danube. In 1955 Austria won its independence by the so-called “State-Treaty,’’ which was signed by Russia, the U S A., England, and France. October 26, 1955 was Austria’s first independent day and is now our national holiday. In December of the same year Austria became a member of the United Nations and in the early 1956 a member of the “Europe Council.” In the last years Austrian politicians have been trying to make contact with the Common Market but according to the “State-Treaty” Austria is not allowed to make any political or economic alliance with a foreign country —we are neutral! Austria is a democratic Republic with a Federal President as the first man in the state. We have a similar form of government and legislation as the United States. The head of the government is the Chancellor, who chooses his ministers and a Vice-President who is from the opposition party. About 89% of our people are Catholics, some Protestants, and about 2% have no religion. Our native language is German, but every village speaks its own slang. I live in a small village with 2,000 inhabitants. I am the oldest child along with two brothers and one sister My father is director of a private bank and my mother runs the household-she is always busy polishing the floors mirror-like. When I return to Austria in July, I have another year of high school if I pass the exams for the year I missed. Every time we speak about the United States we feel that we are talking about friends of ours. After World War II it was the great help of the Marshall Plan which built up our economy and helped to increase our standard of living. At first I couldn’t believe that I would ever go to the United States. Now I can hardly believe that time is going so fast . . but time doesn’t stop and I will have to leave this country which almost converted me to an American. This year was the greatest of my life. “Auf Wiedersehen .... perhaps?!” A i a t . Yt i a 1 i it Jtx -Fritz Scheiber 1. This church is built in honor of Joseph Hayden, a world famous musician who wrote for a former ruler of my country. 2. This is my family in Vienna when I left to sail for Rotterdam on the way to the United States of America. 3. A government building in the capital of my province. 4. A winter resort where I stayed a year ago with my class. We had a one-week skiing course. 5. This is Hattersburg where I attend school. 58 TODD HARDY The American Field Service was organized some fifty years ago with the thought of promoting inCerna-tional understanding and friendship for high school students from all parts of the world. I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to live with a German family last summer. I was one among 700 high school juniors and seniors who traveled to the European continent. United Arab Republic, and India. Through this experience I gained first hand knowledge of the German people. The section of Germany in which I lived was located in the Coal and Steel belt of Western Germany. Factories could be seen surrounding most of the area cities, representing one of the mainstays in the West German economy. My section also included the well-known Rhine River. It is a very picturesque valley region spotted with famous cities such as Bonn and Cologne. A large portion of the German life seemed to be the same as ours. The language was extremely close to English and therefore easily picked up. The monetary system is like ours in that it is based on the mark (25c) and the pfennig (1 100 mark). The German customer is faced with the same advertising, industries, and large department stores as we are. My everyday life with my host family showed me the pronounced importance placed on the home The members of the family do most things together, whether it be working or simply enjoying themselves. Group trips on weekends, and projects around the house occupy a great deal of the family’s time. The parents rule the house with the necessary respect which they receive and call for. The school which I attended during July proved to be very different from the schools we find here in our country. The students are classified as to their working ability at an early age and given a certain level of education depending on his ability. The majority of the students go to the same school from fourth grade until our equivalent of the Sophomore year in college. No extracurricular activities are supplied for the students. School is strictly a place to go to six days a week, to study languages, sciences, or mathematics depending on which school one attends. The German society is filled with remnants of the past in their beautiful cathedrals and villages but is also prospering in the midst of an industrialized world which affects every phase of their lives, from agriculture to transportation. -Todd Hardy 1.
