ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Norman R. Kelley Congratulations to the Class of 1966 It is fitting upon your graduation from high school to relinquish all worthless regrets, unfortunate incidents and unpleasant experiences. It is better to look forward; to determine once and for all to exploit fully your own capabilities; to maintain positive attitudes, resolving to do better. It is still better to remember to radiate good cheer and happiness that it may be reflected from your associates back to you; to give a word of kindness and praise when deserved; and to so conduct yourself in relation with others that it may be said of you, Life is better since he came this way . N. R. Kelley, Supt. BOARD OF EDUCATION 8 SITTING: Mrs. Mary DeVey, Mr. Vernon Cator, Mrs. Elizabeth Bergman. STANDING: Mr. Charles Gifford, Mr. Harold Stiles, Mr. James Peck, Hr. Joseph Justino. Mr. W. Donald Hess Senior High A good educational preparation breeds confidence. Even the shyest and most reticent person eventually gets credit for solid thinking”. Your fine school must be forever dedicated to one purpose, education for those who seek it. PRINCIPALS 9 Mr. Clifford Pitcher Junior High STUDENT COUNCIL FIRST ROW: iMayberry, Chittenden, Schantz, Stevens. SECOND ROW: Fremouw, Monje, Hardy, Bush. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Student Government is synonymous with happiness, creating an idea or thought and developing it until it is perfected. This is the purpose of the Student Government of Newark Senior High. Its many functions develop within the school a formal, yet happy, atmosphere. The Student Government aids many organizations in the school as well as in the community. This common link consists of president, vice-president, secretary, boy and girl representatives, and class presidents. This form of student leadership takes part in all election campaigns, selects paid assemblies, grants charters to new clubs, and monitors the lunch lines. It also organizes drives for the Red Cross, American Field Service, and Foster Parents’ Plan. The other branch of student government, the Student Congress, is composed of representatives from each homeroom. Under the direction of the Vice-President of the Student Council, the Congress elects a vice-president and secretary. This body serves as an intermediary between the individual students and the Student Council. Upon these people rest the organizational responsibility of the school. Under their leadership it is possible for the school to function smoothly and with maximum efficiency. !• I ' , , FIRST ROW: Vanderbrook, Westbrook, Flnewood, DeVey, Carney, Chaffee, Monje, DeBruyne. SENIORS CLASS OFFICERS President: William Fremouw; Vice-President: Kathleen Peters; Secretary-Treasurer: David Lagana. CLASS HISTORY Our Freshman year at the Junior High was spent With Lawrence Stevens class president We led the school, and enjoyed success from Some Enchanted Evening , our own Freshman prom. The following year we moved in to occupy The Sophomore classes at the Senior High. This same year saw us to class underlings reduced, And Around the World in 80 Days was produced. With Susan Stoddard as our Junior class head To an active role in school events we were led. Our Shangri La and play, Harvey , won enthusiastic awards, While we struggled with National Merit Tests and first College Boards. Now as seniors, we gaze on future’s bright ember. But we shall ever this final year of school-life remember With Where’s Charley? and college, yearbooks, and Class Day skits, And the aura of excitement which youth’s promise permits. As June and graduation steadily near, Our assurance is shaky but destiny clear From a world built on Knowledge from books ensuing We plunge into life based upon actual doing. Therefore, we thank Newark High School for giving Us students the best-known blue-print for living-To keep for ourselves one, simple, lone star with spirit ablaze That sometime, somewhere, someone of our children might say, Life’s theme...........Happiness.........Always, always.” 22 Sue Ann DeBout Sue Ann, who left the class of ’66 during the past summer, will always be remembered as a cheerful, pleasant, enjoyable person with a good sense of humor; but she had a serious side when the occasion called for it. Sue Ann was an active member of Future Homemakers of America for four years. She always seemed to have a smile and a good word for everyone. Cora Alberts Nancy J. I always had a big dream” and this dream was to study abroad. I was always interested in learning about the life and customs of different kinds of people, and living with people of another country is the best way to learn. Last year this dream” came true when I was accepted as an American Field Service exchange student On August 26, 1965, I left Venezuela and flew to Miami, where all the Latin American students met We spent two days there and then on August 29 at midnight, after a long, fifty hour bus-trip, I arrived in Rochester where my host family, the Wemetts, were waiting for me. I was very tired, but very excited as I began my new life. My first impression of Newark was positive, a quiet and friendly town as a contrast with my hometown, Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, which is a cosmopolitan city where life is always rushed. During my first weeks in Newark 1 had a hard time with my English because I couldn’t understand the slang expressions: Are you kidding me?”, you are a fink”, cool it” ... I felt deaf; I couldn’t understand what was going on! . . . As the time passed by, I improved a lot! I picked up the language and I adapted to the new kind of food and American customs. I’ve called this year my year of firsts”, because this was the first time I carved a pumpkin on Halloween, a custom we do not have in my country; this year was the first time I studied in a co-ed school, and I think it is a lot of fun! Christmas came, and at first I felt very homesick, because it was my first time away from home, but it was also the first time I had a stocking”. Oh! how much fun I had opening all my presents on Christmas Day . . . Then the snow came, and this was the first time I had seen this white stuff”! . ( . q And as a good winter fan” my first time skiing, which really was quite an — 3Clr Oo experience . . . n b nr I Each day was full of surprises and everything had a special meaning j , fpr mGt even the most insignificant happenings. I ! Now my dream” is fading away because my year in America is drawing . ll to its close, but 1 will return to Venezuela with only happy memories of my i y to the United States and they will remain forever . . . BILL FREMOUW amoj Friendship and increased understanding among our fellow men have been the aims of the American Field Service since 1914. It was founded as a volunteer ambulance service with the French armies and carried thousands of wounded in World War I. The Ah'S instituted graduate fellowship for French universities between the wars, and after serving again in World War II with the Allied Armies, and therefore with men of many nationalities and beliefs, it revived the idea of a peace time program to further the basic friendship which exists among all men. In 1947, a teenage foreign exchange student program was started. The Brazilian people are grateful to their American brothers for this help. Nevertheless, there are many more problems to be solved. Brazil is growing and changing every day. Education is being improved, hospitals are being built, industry is growing, and the government is trying to aid its people. Brazil, the giant of Latin America, has just started to grow. THESPIANS The Thespian Club is a living example of the many faces of the theater. The visual face of the actor who carries out the role in the play is joined by many other faces, which, though not seen, are just as vital to the play’s success. For each actor, there must be a costume and make-up. The set, which must be designed and built, must be vitalistic while conforming to the stage directions. The play must be well-publicized. Sound effects, curtains, and lighting must be controlled. All of these things must be co-ordinated by the director. This year’s best example of such a combined effort was the musical Where's Charley?, done in cooperation with the choral clubs. Seldom does anyone experience such happiness and satisfaction as when the applause of the audience and the glare of the footlights have just died down on a presentation well done. The club seeks to promote international good will, an unprejudiced attitude toward all peoples, and an appreciation of foreign cultures. All of these goals are important in today’s world to create the understanding necessary for peace. Ihroughout the year the club has guest speakers who have traveled abroad to tell of their experiences in foreign countries. The Cosmopolitan Club assists in the American Field Service Drive in the fall each year and sponsors a tea for the foreign exchange students of the county. In an assembly, they speak to the student body about the life and customs at their native countries. Through the aid of guest speakers, girls are able to learn more about the possibilities of teaching as a career. Membership is open to any girls in the four classes who show an interest in teaching and meet the scholastic requirements. HI-TIMES STAFF The Hi-Times publishes school news items in the weekly local paper, The— Newark Courier-Gazette. The volunteer staff consists of writers and typists 7 Lc_ headed by an editor, a junior editor, a business manager, and their assistants. Underclassmen are probationary members for one year. At the end of this period they are formally invited to join the staff if their work has been acceptable. The editor makes assignments and accepts final responsibility for ma- cr- terial. The business manager keeps the books and sells papers within the school from which the club accrues a small profit. The purpose of the Hi-Times page is to inform the students, faculty, and other interested members of the community of the many varied activities connected with the school. UUL OJLjl. 07 - —-d. The boys cooperate in making valuable contributions to such charitable organizations as the Red Cross, Community Chest, American Field Service, and the Foster Parents’ Plan. By accepting and promoting the purpose and principles of the Hi-Y club, the members are continually increasing the recognition of the organization. Brightening the life of an individual is developing a sense of gratitude and happiness in yourself. In the Tri-Hi-Y, the girls visit the State School and make favors for the aged. The Boys’ Service Club also weeds the shrubbery it planted, directs parking, and runs the concession stand at the football and basketball games. CONCERT BAND The Coral Clubs, under the direction of Mr. Wadsworth, include the Freshman Chorus, Senior Chorus, Girls’ Glee Club, Boys’ Glee Club, Swing Wing, and Girls’ Ensemble. These groups give two main concerts during the year, one presented during the Christmas season, and the other in the spring. The members of both the Girls' Ensemble and Swing Wing are chosen from the Senior Chorus. The Swing Wing consists of the members of Girls’ Ensemble plus an equal number of boys. These two groups rehearse outside of school to perform at many functions in the community. Collaboration with the Thespian Club made possible the very successful performance of Around The World In Eighty Days’’ two years ago. The musical Where’s Charley? , presented for two evenings this spring, was also very favorably received. The band clubs, directed by Mr. Bascom, consist of the Concert Band and the Dance, or Stage, Band. The Concert Band is composed of 70 members selected on their musical ability and willingness to devote their time to music of classic and light concert styles. The Dance Band consists of 15 members who perform occasionally after home basketball games. The band members also play at the football games, adding pep and enthusiasm to this sport. Along with marching in parades, our band gives two concerts each year. The band made two public concert appearances last year at the winter and spring concerts. The band members also participate in an All-County Band at the Junior and Senior High School level, the New York State Band and Solo Contest, and the All-State Sectionals. They take an occasional trip to Rochester for the appreciation of professional groups, such as the Eastman Wind Ensemble. This year they also attended a performance of the Marine Band. Because of the variety of opportunities offered by the music department of Newark Central School, any student interested in music is sure to find what he seeks in one of these clubs. 91 FIRST ROW: Langlands, Foster, Stell, Reynolds, Mar-cano, Hughson, Montana, Cambier, Blount, Chetney, Fagner, Magee. The Girls’ Athletic Club is composed of those sophomore, junior and senior girls who are interested in sports activities. Each girl must participate in at least three of these intramural programs in order to maintain membership in the club. A wide range of sports is offered, including field hockey, tennis, basketball, and swimming. The culmination of the club’s activities comes in the spring, when those girls who have acquired enough points to qualify spend a weekend at Bristol. The G. A. C. gives girls an opportunity for personal growth and development through active participation in an excellent sports program. SOCCER CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders of Newark Senior High School create great enthusiasm throughout the student body for the success of our teams. There are three squads, each consisting of five members and two substitutes, excluding the Freshman squad which has one substitute. Throughout the year at our pep assemblies, entertaining, yet impressionable, skits are put on by the Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders. Becoming a cheerleader is a very rewarding feat since try-outs are extremely competitive. The girls selected are expected to live up to the fine standards of our school. Our Golf team has an excellent record of ten wins and only two losses. Since practice is more on an individual rather than a group basis, it is extremely important that all of the participants are willing to devote much of their spare time to practicing at the Newark Country Club. We congratulate our Golf team and wish the boys of the team the best of luck for next season. If you picked one word to describe the Tennis team, that word would probably be success. The team’s record is extremely good, and in the school year of 1965 it placed at the top of the participating teams. Two consecutive years before that it won over all of its opponents. Everyone looks towards the season of 1966 as another big year, for the completion of the tennis courts at the Senior High School will allow much more practice. The future for the team is indeed bright. TENNIS FIRST ROW: Tyler, Weeks, Scott, Palmer, Shuman. SECOND ROW: Mr. Bascom, Jag-ger, Fremouw, Reeves, Gilbert, Grauer. Newark Central School is proud of its 1965 edition of our country’s national pastime. We at Newark High think very highly of our baseball coach Mr. Reddout as well as the entire team. The Varsity had a ’65 season’s record of 3 wins, 7 losses, while the J.V. record was 7 wins, 7 losses. We wish the best of luck to the players of this year’s team and to future teams representing Newark. BASEBALL FIRST ROW: Hauseman, Bohusz, Rago, DePauw, Ceravolo. This year’s team has experienced the thrill of competition, and the happiness of breaking new records. SWIMMING When a student signs up for the swimming team of this High School, he has only one thought in his mind. This thought, the compelling urge to win, may be observed at any practice or swimming meet. With this thought he represents our school as he takes the final turn several laps ahead of his competitors. Coach Neely’s finmen have kept up the great team spirit so common to all Newark athletes. The bowling team strives for individual achievement as well as team accomplishment. Winning most of their matches, the members contend for a worthy record which will maintain their already high interschool standing and their personal satisfaction of achieving. VARSITY FOOTBALL In mud, snow, and the worst conditions possible, our football team has always put forth their best effort. Our boys who go out for this, sport are up against rigorous training and some disappointment, but we never should lack in pride of them. Perhaps they gain happiness from the feeling that they play their game both honestly and well. J.V. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL SOCCER The Newark High School soccer team is comprised of a group of hard working players and coaches, who, on the average, engage in two games per week. This year many realized that this relatively new American sport needed backing and support if it was going to prove itself a success. More and more people showed up at the games, and, led by our energetic cheerleaders, supplied the enthusiasm which undoubtedly boosted the team's play and work. WRESTLING The school year of 1965-66 has been quite a successful one for the Newark Wrestling Team. Although the team did not achieve a winning season they did bring their average of wins up considerably. The new wrestling coach, Mr. Lewis, and the team have exerted a tremendous effort this year, and next year the hopes are high that the Newark Wrestlers will do even better.
