Kelley Congratulations to the Class of 1965 It is my wish for each of you that you may enjoy a full measure of success during your lifetime. Perhaps I should make clear what I mean by success. Therefore, I will quote a little poem the author of which is unknown. Success doesn't mean that you've won great wealth. That you strove all your life for gain. That you hurried and worried and ruined your health — Success such as that is vain. But the good that you've done with the chance you had — That you aided a man in distress. That you spread good cheer and made others glad — That, my lad, is the true success. Not always crowned with a laurel wreath, Nor placed in the hall of fome. Success to the man in the place beneoth, Is in playing an honest game. The first of the two branches that comprise this student government, is the Student Congress, the lower house . It consists of representatives from the homerooms. The vice-president of the Student Council serves os the president of the Congress, while a vice-president and o secretary are elected from the body of representatives. It is this body that acts as on intermediary between the Student Council and the homerooms. The Student Council, or upper house, consists of a president, vice-president, secretary, and boy and girl representatives elected by popular vote in May of the school year preceding their term of office. Also, the presidents of the respective classes are members. Among its many duties are the sponsoring of all campaigns and drives, selecting paid assemblies, granting charters to new clubs, and monitoring the lunch lines. These two groups are vital parts in the machinery needed to keep this school running efficiently and smoothly. 18 FIRST ROW: Whiteford, Cosgrove, Weiler. Schontz, DeJohn, Grouer. Yes, we were finally in High School and were Freshmen. We were the leaders of the Junior High School. We elected Nancy Cebulo os our class president. Our Freshmen Prom was Cherry Pink ond Apple Blossom White . For many of us it was our first social function. Then, our superiority turned into inferiority as we travelled to the Senior High School. We were once again underclassmen. Also, we experienced shock and dismay os we met new teachers, got lost in the new holls, and struggled through our harder courses. Tom Krens was our class president thot year. The next year we were Juniors. We were going up in the world, things were getting underway. Our Junior ploy, The Mouse that Roared, was a record-breaking success. Our Junior Prom, Moonlight and Roses, was very well attended, with over one hundred couples there. Tony Santoro was our class president. Now we ore seniors with Sam Bonofede as our president. We ore finally on the top of all the classes. College ond careers are coming very soon and we potiently are awaiting them. For all of us there is the hope of success. Soon we will be on our own. Our vacations are about to end. In the future, we will most casually be able to look bock on our High School years and remember what we thought was difficult then ond remember the best four years of our youth. 22 ROXANNE LEIGH BEAL Roxanne, known to many os Honey , left her classmates on indelible memory of a girl whose joy in living radiated from her and became a part of those who associated with her. Her casual acquaintances will always remember her warm, cheerful smile and vibrant personality. Roxanne was active in Girls' Athletic Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Senior High Chorus, and Intramurals. Her interest in people and their feelings gained for her many friends. The interest she had, in even the simple events and occurrences of a person's everyday life, was genuine; nothing seemed too trivial or unimportant to her. The happiness she brought to many of us will never be forgotten. She will live with us always —a memory os fresh ond olive os she was. ABBY R'KAINA Most of the names of Arabic-speaking countries have a meaning. Morocco means the far west where the sun sets. Northern Morocco is very hilly. Southern Morocco is divided into three sections. One section is desert where one can fry on egg over the top of a car. Another section is very flot and good farming land. Between the two sections are the high Atlas Mountains where it snows. The Moroccan climate is very pleasant as a whole. Morocco is ruled by a king. King Hassan II, who is a young married man about thirty years old. We have a parliament, too. The Moroccon flog is red with a green star in the middle. Most people in Morocco are Moslem but there are Jews and Christians, too. Moslems, of which I am one, believe in Islam. The Islamic religion is somewhat different from Christianity but has many similiar beliefs. Arabic is the language of the Moslems and is written from right to left. My family and I speak this at home. The important languages in Morocco are Arabic, French, and Spanish, but English is being taught in schools now. I went to a small American school in Tangier, where the courses are taught in English, and I will return there next year. Most of the people of Morocco are formers. Now the farmers are starting to come to the cities and get jobs in the industrial plants and the new factories that are being built. Some of the people wear the Moroccon national costume which is Arabic in origin, but many wear European clothes. Tangier, where I live, is a very old city. The Romans and Phoenicians settled in Tangier long before people sailed very far into the Atlantic. The Phoenicians used Tangier os o trading post. Now it is a city that makes money from the tourist trade. The seaport of Tangier ploys an important role, too. The city is well-known for its beaches and camping grounds; the Mediterranean Beach is about three miles long. On the western coast of Tangier one can swim in the wavy Atlantic ocean. The city is divided into three sections: the old Moorish section, the new modern section of the city, and the pleasant countryside. I live in the new part of the city. My father owns a bakery near by. We live in a big house overlooking Mediterranean Sea. We are six brothers and one sister, who is the youngest in the family. I am the only one in the family who goes to an American school. My brothers go to Moroccan-French schools, which are government owned. Morocco is located in a perfect spot for stopping trade from going into one half of the world by sea. For this reason, countries have fought for Morocco and against Morocco. In the early twentieth century the French occupied southern Morocco and the Spanish occupied the northern part. Tangier became an international zone after this. The population of Morocco is about 13,000,000. The population of Tangier is about 170,000. This number is divided among Moroccans, Spanish, Jews, French, Americans, and English. This is so because Tongier has been international. Morocco won its independence in 1956. The United States and Morocco get along very well with each other. This feeling of friendship is expected to last a long time. The dramatic society of Newark High School is known as Thespians . Its purpose is to stimulate and promote an interest in the performing orts. To become a member of the Thespians, the student must audition before a committee of the president, vice president, secretary, and faculty advisor of the club, Mrs. Shaw. After the audition, the student is voted into the club providing he shows sufficient talent. A student may also join Thespians by becoming a member of the Stage Crew. In the spring of each year the Thespians present a major production for the enjoyment of the public, this production always being warmly received. One of the hordest working groups in Newark High School is the Stage Crew. This group of stage workers is responsible for the successful execution of all assemblies and productions which take place on our stage. During the year the members of the Stage Crew ore called upon almost weekly to help in some way with the production of one of the traveling programs that visit our school. Whether they ore only asked to carry props or to actually participate on the stage, they ore there when they ore needed. Also, they assist in doing the lighting arrangements to augment the Bond or Chorus concerts. In the fall and spring when plays are being produced, they spend many long hours building sets, getting sound effects ready, and arranging lighting, thus complimenting the whole production. On top of all these duties, they are responsible for the care and maintenance of all the stage equipment. Their versatility and hard work is thus recognized by all those involved in any type of stage production. KNEELING: DeLyser, Wemeti, Lennon. CHORUS OFFICERS FIRST ROW: Block, Frey, Rice. The music department of Newark Central School is large and extremely active. Among its featured attractions are holiday concerts given at Christmas and in the spring. The choruses, under the direction of Mr. Wadsworth, ore large and their wide variety of songs are performed well. The Swing Wing, a select group chosen from the ranks of the Senior Chorus, has been ex-ponded this year. This group is frequently called upon to perform for various organizations in the community. The girls of this group, called the Girls Ensemble, is also well known for its excellent performances. The bands, directed by Mr. Bascom, have also increased in number this year. From the main band, Concert Band, students were chosen on the basis of their ability and willingness to devote their time to mainly classical music, to moke up the Symphonic Band. With the addition of new blazers for this band, it is indeed an impressive group. The Marching Band has now completed its fourth year of adding pep and enthusiasm to our home football games. Praise her, let echoes aye the sound prolong; Our emblem always rise, victor in the fray; March on, in pride and state, maroon and gray. Our Newark High School, long may that name Live in our memories, always the same. May glory crown her brow, nothing ever mar. And may she be to us a guiding star. 137 NEWARK SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL With these views of the two institutions which we shell always remember for their part in forming our lives, we bring to an end our attempt to record the school year of 1964-1965. Whether our attempt was valid remoins to be decided by you, the student body. If, for a mere instant in the distant future you are able to regain the spirit of the school life portrayed here, all the work involved in the production of this yearbook will not have been in vain. A yearbook is composed of people: those who work on it, those who ore in it, thd especially those who remember through it. We would here like to express our thanks to the administration, the faculty, Blair Studios, the student body, and the 1965 Arcadian staff, without whose cooperation the production of this yearbook would have been impossible.
