These students were to become the graduating class of 1962. Gradually our fears and insecurity became a thing of the past and we settled down to the general routine of our school. Since the new Senior High School opened its doors in the fall of 1958, we freshmen were left behind to exercise our prerogative over the under-classmen which made us feel very superior. That year we put a great deal of emphasis on our autobiographies for English. Our main social event for the year was our freshman donee, and the faculty selected Roger Vanderbrook and Barbaro Hutchinson as our King and Queen. For our class officers we elected: Anthony Volvano, President; Roger Vanderbrook, Vice-President; Bonnie Sova, Secretory; Pat Monje, Treasurer. Our color guard and standard bearers were Borbora Wildridge and Parker Royfield. We were all very excited in September of 1959 at the thought of entering the splendid new Senior High School, but again we were somewhat bewildered by the new building, the new teachers, and the new environment. Our Sophomore year was rather uneventful, probably because we were all trying to become acclimated to all of the new surroundings and the new courses of study. That yeor we elected Anthony Valvano os our President, John Celso as our Vice-President, ond Jack Dubler os our Secretary-Treasurer. The color guard and standard bearer for that year were Janet Wrench and Parker Royfield. Our Junior year was one of mony notable events. We had important reseorch papers to do for English ond history. Some of us were already thinking about colleges ond our futures. Those students who were interested took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests and the College Entronce Examinations. We chose the cast and committees for our production of the Junior Play, which was The Diary of Anne Frank. The highlight of the year was the Junior Prom, which had as its theme A Thousand Stars. The band chose Janet Wrench os our Queen and Tisha Torontelli as her attendant. Our Junior class officers were Anthony Valvano, President; John Celso, Vice-President; Pat Monje, Secretary-Treasurer. Our color guard ond standard beor-er were Janet Wrench and John Admiraal. We have now entered our Senior year and we hope we have prepared ourselves for the future. Our main project for the year was our United Notions Theme. A great deal of time was spent taking scholarship examinations and filling out college applications. For the first time in the history of the school, our class elected for the fourth year Anthony Valvano as our class President. Our Vice-President was John Celso, ond our Secretary-Treasurer was Janice Lagenor. Our color guard and standard bearer were Janet Wrench and John Admiraal. We will be graduated on June 22, 1962, with a great amount of joy and sadness in our hearts. We shall leave these halls with the amount of knowledge which each one of us has acquired and hope that we have prepared ourselves for the future years. 20 JOHN ADMIRAAL, JR. FALL SPORTS Although our football team had an average record this year, the season was very colorful. Capacity crowds poured out to the School's new athletic field to witness the thrilling games. Newark's soccer squad can be ad-mired for their stamina. Newark faced only schools having no football team, which adds to its problems. However, school interest has been increasing for this new sport. SOCCER TEAM FIRST ROW: Alvaro, Lawrence, Elzufon, Hoy, DeMarco, VanDusen, Britt, Comstock. FRESHMEN BASKETBALL WINTER SPORTS High-scorer Peter Decker was still the tallest ployer on the basketball team. However, the averoge height of the teom shot up quite a bit this year. The wrestling team practically carried on a campaign to round up spectators; apparently they were successful, for more students and parents turned out for the exciting meets. The swimmers missed os successful a season as last year, but were still in there splashing. One great hinderance was the fact that the squad had to meet the large Rochester schools more than once. The bowlers, coached. by Mr. Chetney, increased their number this year with an invasion of Freshmen. This great potential promises a more victorious season in the future. The rose corsage given to a dinner partner . . . the box of roses sent to a hospitalized friend . . . the bouquet presented to a beauty queen ... or the single rose a youngster pins on his girl . . . all these express thoughts that are universally understood. Though on a subverbal level, this form of communication has been used down through history by the peoples of all nations. A joint Congressional bill to name the rose America's official flower states: the Rose has “long represented love, courage, loyalty and devotion and has become an international symbol of peace.” Cleopatra received Marc Antony on a carpet of rose petals eighteen inches thick . . . The pool in front of the Taj Mahal, the Mohammedan monument to love, was covered nightly with rose petals so that the Shah’s wife could bath in their fragrance . . . In the Wars of the Roses, the houses of York and Lancaster used a white rose and a red rose to express loyalty to a cause for which they were prepared to die . . . George Washington, it is reported, hybridized the first American rose and named it Martha Washington after his wife . . . And according to legend the Grant rose with its incurving petals of blood red sprang up at the spot where in 1836 Settler John Grant, his youthful wife and child were massacred by Seminole Indians . . . The rose comes first among America’s 40.000.000 gardeners. (In a 1950 Gallup Poll nineteen out of twenty Americans named the rose their favorite flower.) Roses are being used throughout the country not only in bed plantings but as aids in landscaping. Floribunda Rose hedges provide masses of color from June to fall frosts; single or grouped Floribunda Roses brighten foundation plantings around America’s new suburbia while Climbing Roses cluster about doorways or sprawl along fences from the Atlantic to the Pacific. And now industry has begun to use rose plants in factory and office landscaping as a part of their community relations. An estimated 75,000.000 rose plants are sold annually in the United States. The largest single source of roses is the Jackson Perkins Company. From its 6,000 acres of rose fields in New York, California and Arizona come an annual crop in excess of 10,000.000 plants. ty iC tfill While the rose is the symbol of perfection, hybridists never cease in their efforts to develop improved specimens. In the Jackson Perkins research centers at Newark, New York, and Pleasanton, California, new roses are being developed that promise to add lustre to the roster that already includes such all-time rose greats as: Fashion, Vogue. Ma Perkins, White Bouquet, Fusilier, Gold Cup, Spartan and Golden Masterpiece. These are a far cry from the species roses (30 of the world’s 200 species roses arc native to America.) or the fossilized blossom that tells us a rose plant bloomed at Crooked River.
