History of the Class of 1952 '(£ UNIOR High School! We the class of 1952 held our heads high as we entered the doors of Newark £ High School in September, 1946. We launched upon the beginning of six marvelous years. Under the guidance of the patient seventh grade teachers, we became acquainted with the rules and customs of the school. The year ended with Betsy Richmond and Vincent Vianese as color guard and standard bearer. Betsy was also awarded the August Mauer Social Studies Prize along with Pat Wiebeld. The Progress Prize went to Frank Zappia. Our experiences in the eighth grade were truly eventful. We developed a great interest in sports and our school spirit rose to a high peak. Nancy Bartle and Edwin Baumgartner captured the honor of being the best students. Dorothy Faas was awarded the August Mauer Post Social Studies Prize; Nancy Bartle, the American Legion Essay Prize; Jean Conklin, the J. M. Pitkin Progress Prize; and Tom DeJohn and Joan McDougall were named the best citizen of the class. Joan McDougall was also our representative on the Student Council. We then embarked upon our high school career. Tom DeJohn was elected president of the class with Helen DeRue as vice-president, Pat Wiebeld as secretary and Joan McDougall as treasurer. Jim Burgh-duff and Florence VanNorman joined our class in the Freshman year. The main event of the year proved to be our tremendously successful class party. Prize day found Gill Livingston and Berdeane Roemer standard bearer and color guard with Genevieve Shupe being named the rural student with the highest average. Under the leadership of Tom DeJohn, Bill Kibble, Pat Wiebeld and Bob DeMarco we took part in the class plays and cheerleading tryouts in the Sophomore year. We emerged triumphantly from the class play contest and Betty DeVries, Bronnie Smith, Theresa Santino, Elaine Negus, and Berdeane Roemer were chosen as the new Newark High cheerleaders. At the end of the year Ed Baumgartner and Nancy Bartle again became standard bearer and color guard. Joan McDougall was awarded the Comstock Memorial Prize. Soon after the opening of our Junior Year in school, rehearsals for the Junior Plays began. Both the casts and stage workers agreed that the plays were an incident never to be forgotten. This was also the year when averages were scrupulously watched, for it was the year to purchase class rings. Under the direction of our class officers, Duane McFaul, Mel Schwartz, Eilene Visser, and Lynn Carr we began planning for our Junior Prom. It was a huge success with a profit of $30. The only newcomer to our class was A. J. VanHall. Vincent Vianese and Dorothy Faas were standard bearer and color guard. Commencement found thirty-four juniors participating in the exercises. The Junior Honor Girls were Nancy Di Santo, Berdeane Roemer, Dorothy Faas, Joan McDougall, Eilene Visser, Bronnie Smith, Angel-ine Buragina, Marcia Fritz, Genevieve Shupe, Mary Horch, Ann Klefeker, Pat McParland, Barbara Hayden, Gloria Cook, Suzanne Robb, Betty Barberi, and Anne Havert. The Junior Honor Boys were Ed Baumgartner, Jack Ferrell, Vincent Vianese, Gill Livingston, Paul Vosburgh, Mel Schwartz, Charles Avery, Jim Burghduff, Mike Strong, Frank Whitbeck, Gerald DeBruyne, Pat Bilotta, Paul VanHoesen, Charles Baldwin, A. J. VanHall, Roger Minard, and Duane McFaul. Besides being named to these honor positions, many of the students received prizes on the annual award day. The Masonic Prize was presented to Dorothy Faas, the Harvard Book Prize to Gill Livingston, and the August Mauer Industrial Arts Prize to Francis Martin. Seniors! All of us knew that we would in time become Seniors; but when the day finally rolled around we could hardly believe that it was true. However the long-awaited, much talked-about magazine campaign made us realize that we were in our last year at Newark High. Much to the surprise of everyone (except, of course, ourselves) we topped last year's sales and set a new record of $1 1,525.13. Soon after the termination of the campaign, the Yearbook Staff was selected. They were Jack Ferrell, editor, Dorothy Faas, Eilene Visser, Anne Havert, Gill Livingston, Bronnie Smith, Ed Baumgartner, Shirley Lamote, Dolores Herman, Charles Baldwin, Charles AvCry, Mel Schwartz, and Lynn Carr. Elected to the office of president of the Senior Class was Ed Baumgartner with his administrative assistants-Jim Davis, Marcia Fritz, and Jack Ferrell. As this book goes to press we are anxiously awaiting our Washington trip and we are all looking forward to commencement and the future. Whatever the future holds in store for us we will never forget the good times we had in the Class of 1952 at Newark High School. 33 Voted the Best BEST LOOKING Ann Klefeker Roger Bush BEST DRESSED Lewis Ross Teresa Santino BEST ARTISTS Mel Schwartz Dorothy Schwartz Mr. Hawver BEST STUDENTS Ed Baumgartner Genevieve Shupe 34 WITTIEST Jack Ferrell Betty Barberi BEST ATHLETES Tom DeJohn Berdeane Roemer BEST DANCERS Bob DeMarco Joan Burm BEST MUSICIANS Charles Avery Suzanne Robb BEST ACTORS Vincent Vianese Shirley Lamote 35 AMBITION SAYING Abbott Business Executive What da ya say, Monk?
