Huai tan 1051 mrtuark IM ti tfiool Alma Mater That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain; The happy highways where I went And cannot come again. Houseman. 3 Dedication E. R. WOELFEL O HIS class of 1951 is happy to have an opportunity to express its regard for Mr. E. R. Woelfel. We believe that he is one of the best friends the students of Newark have ever had. We like to remember that while he took an uncompromising stand on wrong-doing, he never held a grudge against anyone. We think two of the finest things he passed on to the Student body were a feeling of responsibility and a very strong sense of good sportsmanship. To him, students were not just a list of names on a class roster, but faces and personalities --people. Today his genial smile, outward expression of his genuine friendliness toward all human beings, and especially toward yound people, reminds us that he still has a very keen interest in our wellbeing. And so, to Mr. E. R. Woelfel, the Arcadian for 1951 is dedicated. 4 In Memoriam HARRY A. CROFOOT 1893 - 1950 I Pray thee, then. Write me as one that loves his fellow-men. THE STUDENT COUNCIL j VERY spring, the student body chooses a new student council. Mr. Burditt, our very able treasurer, is the only permanent member of the council. A president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and a boy and girl representative compose the central body of the student council. A representative from the seventh and eighth grades and the senior high class presidents are added to the group. One of our big projects this year was the reorganization of a school paper. Also, we have tried to make better pep-meetings by supervising them. The new cafeteria, which was opened in January, gave us another supervision job. Since we are a member of the National Association of Student Councils, we send representatives to regional meetings every year. Our student council, on the whole, has tried to improve conditions in the school as well as the school itself. 14 Seventh Grade 1ST ROW: MARROCCO, TAVANO, 8HAFFNER, DE CANN. MARTIN. ROBINSON. HINES. These boisterous unorganized groups were guided into three sections by the overlords and by the end of this first year, former antagonisms were forgotten in the new inthusiasm of working together for the good of all. Ellen Kemper and Paul Perkins were named to the Castle Honor Guard. The group embarked upon its second year in the castle with more confidence and pep, for more activities had been planned. Teas for the overlords and ladies, at which the serfs presided, were given, and many members, found sports an essential part of castle life. From all points of the compass wandering serfs joined the band under the castle's protection. Appointed to the Honor Guard were Marie Filardo and Gerald Nellis. The serfs were proud of their classmates who received awards --LuAnne Hughes for her essay on the Constitution, Ellen Kemper for outstanding achievement in Social Studies, and Ronald Havert and Eleanor Schraffenberger for being the best castle citizens. Having faithfully served the required two years of serfdom, most of the group was elevated to the rank of page. In this advanced stage, leaders were necessary. Worden Wolford, Joanne Baraw, Joyce Lee and Marie Filardo were chosed to rule the pages. Besides the everpresent sports, a new group was established for those interested or talented in the dramatic art. This new group was called Scitamard. Others preferred to join the Castle Carolers or the Troubadours. This year awards were bestowed upon Barbara Nor-sen for having the highest average of any rural student, and Paul Martin for having done the best work in four years of shop. Ellen Kemper and John Barker were named to the Castle Honor Guard. Under the leadership of Ken Havert, Clara Spalteholz, Norma Faas, and Dick Hallagan the newly appointed squires eagerly took up new tasks. The group emerged triumphant from the Play Contest, one of its main projects. In the Spring, a party was planned and enjoyed by both the squires and the overlords and ladies attending. To lead the tournament teams to victory, Theresa Marro, June Negus, Joyce Lee, Vivian Flamey, and Joanne Baraw were selected. The band burst with pride when one of its comely members was chosen Rose Queen. At the termination of this year, Norma Faas and Jack Barnhart were named to the Honor Guard. Alan Kennedy, a squire held in highest esteem, was awarded the Thomas Comstock Memorial prize. I dub thee knight - yes, the group became shining knights as the fifth year rolled around. Plans for the best Junior Plays ever were expertly handled by the ruling knights, Bob Cowles, Ann Botcher, Joanne Robinson, and Donald Leege. The class of knights as a whole was responsible and outstanding enough to be allowed to present a Junior Prom. The castle game room was beautifully bedecked for the dance, the first of its kind. To the Honor Guard were named: Color Guard - Ellen Kemper, Standard Bearer - Alan Kennedy. Bob Cowles received the Masonic prize and Ellen Kemper was awarded the Latin Prize, the Elmira College Key, and the prize for having the year's highest scholastic record. At the end of the year the knights were again decorating for a dance, this time a Graduation Ball for the Senior lords and ladies. Senior year in the Castle of Knowledge! Led by Worden Wolford, Donald Leege, Barbara Flavin, and Norma Faas, the new lords and ladies launched their magazine subscription drive in September, sold tickets for a benefit basketball game, campaigned in Senior homerooms for such worthy causes as the Polio drive and the Community Chest, assembled the 1951 Arcadian, planned the annual Washington trip, arranged the class day program, and prepared for Commencement. Senior members of the Round Table were Ken Havert - President, Clara Spalteholz - Secretary, Theresa Marro - Girl Representative, and Worden Wolford - Class President. The group, being the oldest in the castle, tried, sincerely to earn the respect accorded them by the underclassmen. A bit of the knowledge which was supposed to have been absorbed has penetrated (probably by Osmosis). It is with mingled joy and sorrow that the halls of the Castle of Knowledge are left and the lords and ladies of '51 go forth to make their fortunes. 39 Will We Ever Forget [If HEN Miss Glynn marched around the gym in her toga, as head cheerleader----- VV the rugs in kindergarten----how Chuck Libbert and his dog Button used to race home from Roosevelt School to avoid the riots-----when the East Pal boys wore lipstick in the sixth grade-------------------------the time Mary Mancuso and Barb Palmeri beat up Barker, Barnhart, and Holmes with their geography books--- Getting -20 words per minute in typing---Mrs. Knox's picnic----the eighth grade teas---- How there Brown Bear -----betting on the horses from the racing form in the New York Times -----Hummy's-------eighth grade cheerleaders: Clara, Vivian, Joyce, Pat, Terry, Bunny, Carm, Rita, June, Mimi, LuAnne, Joyce VanWaes------ Deep in the Heart of Texas ---Miss Wright's joke 427 from her book of 1,000 jokes and toasts--throwing candy on sixth grade class day--------------------------------------------------when Mrs. Burger (then Miss O'hara) used to say no tickee, no lunchee -how we hated Oral English---------------------------------------------------Ed Winters riding the freight cars home from school- The time the geometry class was sent to eighth grade arithemitic class to learn fractions----when John Torrell played Abraham Lincoln and Norma Faas played an Indian in a Roosevelt pageant--how Nicky Frederick charged twenty-five cents for a ride on his pony--- Rip sleeping in Senior Social Studies, DeWisp sleeping in Junior Social Studies- Alan's spider---Arf-Arf---Biology days: disecting a worm, breaking forty-two test tubes in one period, decorating the P. HE American Junior Red Cross is an outgrowth of the national organization known as the American Red Cross. It was formed a few years ago when it became apparent that the youth of America wanted to share in the great humanitarian work of this society. Newark High School has been enrolled in this service since 1930 and now has 100% membership. One of the chief purposes of the American Junior Red Cross is to further international good will. We helped do this through our contributions to the National Children's Fund and by packing gift and educational boxes to send to children in war devastated areas. Under his guidance we learned something and had fun doing it. Our November meeting was mainly for organization. We worked on the setting up of our yearly program. During the December meeting, Pat Allen spoke to us on conditions in Korea, a UN problem child, as she observed them during her stay there. Another project which we all enjoyed was making a UN flag. We saw movies about the UN, and at one meeting, we reproduced a model session of the Security Council. In March we attended an open meeting of the Rochester Association for the UN. All in all, we look back upon a very interesting and enjoyable year. OFFICERS President - Norma Faas Vice-President - Donald Kelley Secretary-Treasurer - Norman DeWeaver 54 Stamp Club 1ST ROW: G. CTT HE Newark High School Stamp Club was organized in 1949. In 1950-1951 the club had fifteen members. Meetings were held the first Friday and third Wednesday of each month. Among the Stamp Club's activities for the year were discussions of certain stamps. At the meetings we exchanged both stamps and ideas for collecting stamps. The club subscribed for the periodical, Stamps. One of the highlights of the yea - was an evening meeting, January 30, when William Scheetz of Phelps talked to the group about stamp collecting and various interesting stamps. Our main objective is to lighten the load placed on the art department by requests for posters and other work. Basketball posters have been our biggest job so far, but we also work on individual projects. Some of the members are modeling in clay, while others are trying their hand at glass etching. Although the number of members is limited to twenty, any student may apply for membership. We meet once a week and hope to be taking field trips soon. CT HE Junior Girls' Athletic Club was organized as a branch of the Senior G.A.C. in the winter ■ of 1950, and our charter was revised to meet needs of the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade members. Basketball and other sports were enjoyed by the yound athletes after our luncheon meetings. All thirty-three members of the club took part in playdays, winter sports, swimming, and intramurals. Miss Brown, our advisor, proved invaluable in preparing us girls for Senior G.A.C., which we all hope to enter. Junior G.A.C. is quickly becoming one of the outstanding clubs in the school. Replacing the Krawen, a newspaper called the Hi-Lite made its debut just before Christmas in 1950. Many of our members were formerly writers for a column on high school events in the Newark Courier-Gazette. Finding general approval of the idea, early this fall a committee was appointed by the Student Council to look into the possibilities of reviving the Krawen. With the help of the Student Council, the Office Practice II Class, and several teachers including Miss Turner, Mr. Herrington, Miss L'Amoreaux, Mrs. Robarge, Mr. Powers, Miss Eells, and Mr. MacArthur, the Hi-Lite was born. Although only a few issues have come out to date, the future looks promising for Newark High School's Hi-Lite. Editor--Joan McDougall 58 Yearbook Staff 1ST ROW: J. ROBINSON--SALES. N. FAAS-- BUS. O HE editors and staff of the Arcadian sincerely thank all the peopie who have helped us put this yearbook together. There were many Seniors, n n-staff members, who gave more than financial assistance to our publication: Marv Mancuso, Carol Howell, Marie Filardo, Gale Wandersee, Don Kelley, Terry Marro. Among the underclassmen, Joan McDougall helped the lay-out sheets; Ronny Beerens took snap-shots for us; the home-room representatives throughout the school played an indispensable part in our sales campaign. This list is only a beginning, for the Arcadian has enough friends to fill a page. Many, many teachers lent us a hand when we needed special help. We are especially grateful to our adVisors--Miss Goggin, who patiently checked proof; Mr. Werts, who presided over the financial side of the publication; Mr. Hawver who gave much time and experienced advice to our art staff; and Miss Carpenter our guide, counselor, and friend, who spent innumerable hours on planning and layout. To them, we can only say, Thank you, we could never have done it without you. Several additions were made to the Yearbook Staff after the picture was taken. Alan Kennedy replaced Bob Soper as Sports Editor, Carmella Bailey joined our-typists, Sonny Wolfson and Rose Moyer rounded out the art department. The editors thank all the members of our very fine staff, and especially those who were so willing to pinch-hit on jobs outside their own domains. 59 Band 1ST ROW: S. ROBB, COLE, LAMOTE, WILSON. These early morning gatherings provide rehearsals for spectacular exhibitions at football games; and when the football season ends, an extra iehearsal never does us any harm. Mr. Robb, the director of the Newark Rotary Band, often has his patience tried but when we receive a I in the Spring Contest, he feels his trials and tribulations are rewarded. Early in the Spring, all of our efforts are centered on the annual band concert which usually gives each and every one of us a great deal of satisfaction. We also try to enliven the pep meetings by playing the pep songs. In spite of the fact that we feel a great loss when a batch of seniors leaves the band, Mr. Robb can usually tell us at the end of another year of hard work that we are still the best band he has ever had. We're in there, singing with all our might under Miss Wright's baton. Varsity Chorus, Mixed Chorus, Junior Sextette, and Senior Quartette-we all have a lot of fun learning music. Will we ever'forget that sparkling operetta- The Model Bride, which the Varsity Chorus put on last year? Or the Feast of Lights, our traditional Christmas pageant? Or the gay, informal program that started off the Christmas vacation with a bang? Near the beginning of the second semester, we got plans under way for another operetta. This one is entitled Words and Music. In it, as Miss Wright says, we advance from high school to college. Fall, Winter, or Spring, there's always something doing in the music department! Newark triumphed over East High 13-7 to bring defeat to a city school for the second year in a row. The Newark High Reds continued on the road to fame and glory by defeating Brighton in somewhat of an upset the following week. It looked as though Newark might have an undefeated year as the Big Reds rolled over Irondequoit at Irondequoit. After reaping the benefits of three successful weeks, the mighty Reds faced three dreadful weeks of famine. The lost to Fairport, East Rochester, and Webster in that order. However, three of football without victory was too much for Newark. Our Grid Machine came roaring back to crush Canandaigua in one of the better games of the year. In the last game of the year, which saw the seniors dominate the play, Newark High rolled over Brockport in a razzle-dazzle victory. This N. H. S. squad, although lacking in depth, showed an unconquerable spirit which enabled Newark to remain above the .500 percentage. This Section 5 tournament was previously won by the 1943 squad, which compiled an 18-1, won-lost, record. This is the first sectional crown that Coach Don Hess has won. He guided the Big Reds through a very successful season, watching them end with a 17-4 record. Such capable performers as Jerry Crider, Ronnie DePorter, Dick Pulver, Tom Corkhill, and Captain Bob Cowles will be lost through graduation in June. However, such prospects as John DeSanto, Joe Ceravolo, Ed Lubbert, Tom DeJohn, Roger Bush, and Tony Ceravolo, the lone first stringer, will be back next year.
