1953 SEASCDN Two stars and a cast of featured players gave Coaches Cipolaro and Petrillo the needed material to fashion the championship team of 1953: undefeated in six contests and tied in one. Jim Roach and Pete Newell were the stars in the backfield, providing a punch that only one opponent could match fwhen Newell was sidelinedj, and from right end, Capt. Ted Gibbons led the team with a fine example of scrappy play. The first game with Eastern Military Academy showed that the somewhat uncertain squad had what it takes. This was no easy game but the 26-0 score revealed future greatness The next win over valiant Middletown High 13 0 was again engineered by Roach and Newell with Capt Gibbons playing a strong game at end Union College Freshmen came to Cornwall on the following Saturday and proved the old adage The bigger they are the harder they fall Despite thelr advantage of weight and age the college freshmen could not stop the sp1r1ted Colden Knights The 200 score set the Engineers home wondering what the Cadets had The answer was again Newell and Roach The fourth game with Newburgh Free Academy drew the biggest crowd of the year but this season NYMA was up and NFA down Roach and Newell made their spectacular runs, with Sam Adam, Tom Foster, and Fred Touchstone adding to the backfield power. The Cadets rolled up a 47-0 victory, although Coach Cipolaro cleared the bench in the second half. Sam Adam booted five conversions. The game with Brooklyn Prep. was played in a driv- ing rain, but the mud did not stop the team and the rain failed to dampen the fine spirit of the Corps, who travelled with the team. The sparkling backfield was just as fast as ever and tackles Tom Mason and John Patter- son had a good day in the soup.
