'Ir A 'A' 'Af Social Events OCIALLY, N. Y. M. A., during 1935-36, has maintained its standards of genuinely good fun and fine hospitality. If, to some faint-hearted cadets, the opening of school last September appeared to be a swallowing gulf of dark for- getfulness and deep oblivion, the very first hint of the first social event of the year--Hallowe'en Hop-was a signal for them to lay aside melancholy thoughts, uncertain tempers, and timidly to begin to hope that each respective Queen of My Heart, tenderly invited to the Hop, would prove magnanimous in heart and spirit to save wretched brains from giving way, and cadets becoming wrecks at randon driven, without one glimpse of reason or of heavenf, But with a Harvest moon shining without, and dim lights, shocks of corn, yellow pumpkins, grimacing faces peering from dusky corners, flying witches, and Lovely Love dancing to be- guiling music within-with all these, I say, the Hallowe,en I-lop, with its two evenings of fun, came and conquered. Was it Schniering,s musicians, or was it, after all, just the moon? Perhaps the piece de resistance of the social calender at N. Y. M. A. took place at the Mid-Winter Hop. Incidentally, what a week-end that was! Movies, theater, dancing, teas, turned the Academy's halls of Duty into lanes of sentiment and laughter. On Friday, February 21st, at 7:30, the Corps and its guests saw one of the best pictures of the year, Ah, Wilderness, pre- senting some of Americafs prominent actors. At 9:30, the same evening, a formal reception and dance took place, followed the next evening by the Corps Hop. On these occasions Kas a parallel to existing weather conditions, dare we ask?J the Gymnasium was decorated with nature scenes in the Antarctic, picturing polar bears, penguins, and drivers with their sleds and teams of huskies. 'Tis said, if gossip is worth repeating, that Tommy Shattuck, who designed and executed the penguin motif, finding himself one penguin short, substituted all of Friday evening for the missing penguin. Such heroics! Page om' f7lHHI'7'!'11 vigfJ!3-four t i i I

And now for the piece de resistance! Up f k if i until Saturday evening, February 22nd, 8:30, N. Y. M. A. had been limping along with only five editions of Yea! Furlough to its credit. It is true they were good ones- very good ones, indeed, but for some days before the curtain rung up on the 6th Edition, wise heads bending over dull text books had discreetly whispered that Yea! Furlough No. 6 would be extra It was. Murder In the Core was a big big show, a big success playing to a packed house. All the magic of lights, dazzling costumes, paint, powder, settings, plot, music, spark- ling wit, brilliant talent in the service of gallant men and pseudo-ladies Qveritable flowers of lovelinessb-such was the 6th Edition of Yea! Furlough. But who brought all this to pass? A good neighbor did it for us. We call him neighbor because to us a good neighbor is one who knows the psycho- logical moment to offer a helping hand, one who knows when it is time to play, one who is willing to go-not for a short dis- tance, but the whole way with us. We take this occasion to thank Captain Pattillo for his intelligent comradeship and good entertainment. Was it not Juvenal who said, Nature and Wisdom always say the same ? Hardly had Nature begun to don her spring clothes when the Hop Committee, dusting itself from winter sleep, began announcing the manna of the approaching activity -Mothers' Day Week-end, May lst, an event dedicated to the Mothers and Fathers of the Corps. This was a full week-end. Parades, hops, drills, speeches, luncheons, tea dances, and visit- ing crowded the hours. In addition to the Hop on Saturday, of the Mothers, Day Week-end, a particularly interesting gathering took place on Friday evening when the Senior Class invited the Junior Class to its Ring Dancef' The custom and the dance was a most commendable gesture on the part of the Seniors. It is hoped that this custom, copied from the United States Naval Acad- emy, will become a tradition in our school. Throughout the school year, there occur a number of social evenings. Oftentimes, as we know, many guests are present, and, usually, with us it is the more the merrierng but from time to time there are some special evenings the memories of i t i Page one lJumln'J fight
