'Ir A 'A' 'Af Social Events OCIALLY, N. Y. M. A., during 1935-36, has maintained its standards of genuinely good fun and fine hospitality. If, to some faint-hearted cadets, the opening of school last September appeared to be a swallowing gulf of dark for- getfulness and deep oblivion, the very first hint of the first social event of the year--Hallowe'en Hop-was a signal for them to lay aside melancholy thoughts, uncertain tempers, and timidly to begin to hope that each respective Queen of My Heart, tenderly invited to the Hop, would prove magnanimous in heart and spirit to save wretched brains from giving way, and cadets becoming wrecks at randon driven, without one glimpse of reason or of heavenf, But with a Harvest moon shining without, and dim lights, shocks of corn, yellow pumpkins, grimacing faces peering from dusky corners, flying witches, and Lovely Love dancing to be- guiling music within-with all these, I say, the Hallowe,en I-lop, with its two evenings of fun, came and conquered. Was it Schniering,s musicians, or was it, after all, just the moon? Perhaps the piece de resistance of the social calender at N. Y. M. A. took place at the Mid-Winter Hop. Incidentally, what a week-end that was! Movies, theater, dancing, teas, turned the Academy's halls of Duty into lanes of sentiment and laughter. On Friday, February 21st, at 7:30, the Corps and its guests saw one of the best pictures of the year, Ah, Wilderness, pre- senting some of Americafs prominent actors. At 9:30, the same evening, a formal reception and dance took place, followed the next evening by the Corps Hop. On these occasions Kas a parallel to existing weather conditions, dare we ask?J the Gymnasium was decorated with nature scenes in the Antarctic, picturing polar bears, penguins, and drivers with their sleds and teams of huskies. 'Tis said, if gossip is worth repeating, that Tommy Shattuck, who designed and executed the penguin motif, finding himself one penguin short, substituted all of Friday evening for the missing penguin.
