'k if -k i Swimming 9' T WAS a distinct shock, both disconcerting and disturbing, ij for the 1935-36 swimming team to learn in September that its wise and sympathetic friend and coach, Mr. Srager, had retired from teaching, and, in consequence, would not be with us to lead us on to victory. But we have carried on in a way that would meet with his approval. The swimming team of 1935-36 had an undefeated season. This was accomplished under the direction of the new coach, Lieutenant Beasley. Lieutenant Beasley is a teacher of engineer- ing at West Point, and, at one time was a diving star for the Academy there. The team opened its season by a 44-31 victory over Albany Academy. Particularly outstanding in this meet were two records-one broken and one made. In top form, Fisher, S., broke the backstroke record in the time of 1:07.9, and Beason, established a 220 yard record. Second meet-Manhattan College Freshmen. Score: S2-23 in favor of N. Y. M. A. Third meet-Far Rockaway High School. N. Y. M. A. again won by a score of 39-36. Fourth meet-New Rochelle High School, with N. Y. M. A. scoring 48-27. A medley record of 1:36 was established on this occasion by Pinney, Fisher, S., and Harter, G. This record was broken the following week. Fifth meet--Pawling School. Score: 38-37, in favor of N. Y. M. A. It was in this meet that the medley record estab- lished at the fourth meet by Pinney, Fisher, and Harter was again broken-1:32-by Pinney, Fisher, and Gale. Reviewing the five meets, it is apparent that the Far Rocka- way and Pawling engagements offered serious opposition. Both meets were hard and close, and both were won on technicalities. N. Y. M. A. was fortunate in being able to have a practice meet with West Point Plebes which was not Counted as a sched- uled engagement. N. Y. M. A. dipped to the Plebes although at this event the 220 record set by Beason was again broken by him in a new time of 2:32. Thus, the season, despite much sickness, closed successfully under the direction of Lieutenant Beasley. Page um' brzmfrml foriy-Aix' i i
