0 -H-A f -f - s CLASS IPROPHECY It has many possibilities and grand inspirations, so the editor of the Indianapolis Star told me, as he sent me off on a month's trip, a wild goose chase, it seemed to me. It was my vacation, yet I was only to scour the country side looking for some interesting people whom he could use in his paper, and that I might use in a new column that he was attempting to edit. It was only a half-fo1'med plan which sent me back to the old home town on my quest. How strange it seemed to be back after eleven years' absence! Still it was the same to the extent ot' many new faces and a few new bui'dirgs. The first person whom I thought wou'd sti'l be around was my old girl friend Nelle. I drove out to the Toothman residence, and as I neared the drive I saw several angel-faced youngsters making mud pies. Many hours later when I drove away from the Toothman's my mind was full of the merits of Bruce, Gary, Bornie and Twili, which had been the main topic of my visit. Here was one family that would go toward the new column. Next I went to the Kline Insurance Compai y to see how Charles was making out in his business. His secretary started to tell me that her employer was out, but stopped in amaze- ment when she recognized her former classmate. Agnes Howell had me wait until Charle: came, and then we three had quite a visit until we were interrupted by some prospective customer. As I left the buildirg I wondered if it wasn't going to run true to form, She mar- ried her boss. At least it certainly looked like it. I made a hurried trip to Chicago, hoping 'that I should not be too late. My fears were van- quished as I entered the lobby of the Hotel Commodore and saw Paul Scherer examining the structure of that palatial buildirg. Soon I had waylaid him and learned that he was assistant buyer for some large corporation in Cincinnati, and he had come to Chicago to select new merchandise. He looked for a promotion to head-buyer in a few months as the head-buyer was to become a member of the board. I planned to go back to Logansport, but I thought that since several of my classmates were in Fort Wayne I might just as well stop there, so as not to make an extra trip. Fraiices Wilson had just arrived at her apartment from her day's work. Frances worked as assistant in a well-known doctor's office. It looked as if he meant to keep her with him as lorg as he could or else the diamond was deceiving. Elbert Balsbaugh was working, or had been work- ing, as personal secretary to the Mayor's daughter, but he had given it up to become her nerv- ous groom in a week's time. It seemed as if both had accomplished much siiice leaving their old home town and school. The next day I went to the GE and saw working side by side two great scientists of the day. The head-electrician, John Henson, ard the famous scientist who had given to the world many time-saving devices, Charles Barker, were busy trying to work out some new ideas that they had concocted. Situated in Akron, Ohio, as head of the schoo's, was a tall stately lady who was extremely busy, but stopped long enough to show me the schools she superintended. Christina Wilson had a task that she greatly loved-watching over and being with school children of all ages. There was only one girl left and I could not see her she was in Paris studying under a great designer. Patricia Melton was rapidly becoming known among the women high up in designing dresses. We often heard from her, but her life was so busy that she seldom saw any of her classmates. Then, on to Detroit to see the famous left-hand pitcher, Paul Michael bring his team home to glory and fame. His name was 1'iding high in the stars as one of the most famous pitchers ever known. No need to wish him luck for he had that and more, for sitting in the players box was a pretty lady with a small boy playiig with a baseball already following in his father's footsteps. l After wandering from one place to another, I finally arrived safely at the office with a lot of data for the editor. It had been a happy, happy vacation for mcg the most pleasant memory of it all was the fact that the class of 1940 was rapidly nearing the top, and in ten years more there would be several of them who would be acclaimed by millions as the greatest of their time.
