With a 79-2 record, an 1 1 game winning streak, and the state's 20th ranking, the Mustangs roared into Madison as the team to beat. In game one, the defending champions Southwestern. Just 12 seconds into the game, Jamie Matthews hit the first of his five three pointers. We were off! Mustang defense was a key element in the victory as Southwestern was held to 44 points. Both the inside and outside attack were unstoppable as the Mustangs rolled to an impressive 75-44 victory. Friday night's game matched New Washington and the Madison Cubs. Commu- nity support was overwhelming and the team continued to play precise, inspired basketball. The host school sported an enormous fan club but Matthews' team left them little reason to cheer. With a 20-9 first quarter advantage, the Mustangs left Madison fans speechless.
