He was our teacher, coach, assistant princi- pal, and most of all, our friend. Mr. McGinnis came to NWHS in 1968. He taught us that ttLiterature was the expression of life in words of truth and beauty. After teaching for 17 years and coaching almost every sport, he became our assistant principal in 1983. He was strict, but we knew he cared. He was instrumental in our acceptance in the North Central Association. Kelly Zollman, Ms. Day and selected art students designed and constructed the mascot head from foam and yarn. Ms. Shana Bottorff, a student teacher, sewed and tailored its suit. Students anxiously awaited the first home game and homecoming festivities on Decem- ber 6. Reigning Queen Julie May was escorted by Richie Grimes as the traditional ceremony began. Freshmen Shonna Thompson and Ja- son Walters represented their class; junior nominees Amy Cravens and Kevin Amick fol- lowed sophomores Valerie Bower and Derek Hebner. Senior candidate Janice Bussey and her escort Rusty Holland were introduced last. Third graders Jessica Tinsley and Aaron Hob- son carried the crown. The experience of returning varsity seniors, Michille Wenning and Angie Ryker pro- vided a strong base for supporting players, Kim, Barbara, Dana, Carol, and Glenna. They were the best. But along with the honor came sacrifice made in order to spend time prac- ticing to become number one. Senior Troy Powell tabovet finished 3rd at state competition in the high jump, placed 3rd in the regional and tied the sectional record at W314? Troy also holds the school record and confer- ence record for high jump. Freshman Glenna Bower trightt competed at the AAU Junior Olympics in California placing 4th nationally and 3rd in the state in cross country. Glenna holds the girPs school track records of 2:22 in the 800, 5:06 in the 1600, 11:17 in the 3200, and 9,2,, for the high jump. She placed 1st in the 800 at the sectional, tst in the 1600 and 3200 at the regional, and finished 4th at the state meet in the 1600 meter run. High School All- American Angie Ryker put New Washington on the map taking 1st place in shotput and 7th in discus at state after earning first in both events at the sectional and regional. The outstanding senior holds school records in shotput at 4st 10 and discus at 135M . Angie was named to 1st all conference and all sectional girls basketball teams and hrs-ds the school xord for steals and t ufslStS. Musical Comedy The drama club was finally able to make use of the new stage and auditorium to pre- sent two productions. Santa Sees a Shrink was presented in December to high school and elementary students and starred George Schnell as San- ta. ttSnoopy , the first musical production, starred Valerie Bower as Snoopy, Jennifer Madison as Charlie Brown, Matthew Gordon as Linus, Sylvia Cornelius as Lucy, and Elaine Hayes as Peppermint Patty. The Christ- mas skit, a favorite of the entire student body, spoofed our teachers as kids talking to San- ta. N.W.ts winter was warmed up when ttSpanky Lee per- formed in concert. The year ended with the annual HSpring Fling. I 25 Learning a Living New Washington played host to four student teachers who offered Hguinea pig students a break from the norm in science, math, English, and social studies. I.U.S. sent Ms. Hammond who taught Mr. Foutis middle school algebra, and Ms. Bag- shawis consumer math and high school alge- bra students. Mr. Penningtonis biology I and II students explored anatomy and sea life with Ms. Shana Bottorff. Ms. Fullenkamp and Ms. Hunter, both from Hanover College, taught English with Mr. White and psychology with Mr. Graham respectively. Spirit soared, fan support grew and we watched as New Washington was rated in the states top 20.
