When We Part and Feel the Tear As graduaTion drew near, The girl became aware ThaT she was experiencing a varieTy oT mixed emoTions. All her hopes and plans Tor The TuTure were dimmed by The realizaTion ThaT now she would have To give up so much ThaT had become a parT oT her daily liTe. She began Taking invenTory oT The Three years she had spenT aT New UTrechT, Tor in less Than Tour weeks iT would be over and she wanTed Tc remember clearly This very imporTanT parT oT her liTe. The languorous aTmosphere oT The early June aTTernoon lenT iTselT easily To daydreaming and reminiscing. She carefully Took down The heavy scrapbook which she had begun To keep during her iunior high school days. She saT down on her bed nexT To The windows which over- looked a noT-Too-well-kepT garden and she began inspecTing The conTenTs oT her scrapbook. BeTween The yellowing pages, she Touncl a Tiny mimeographed card indicaTing whaT Timo she was To reporT on SepTember 9, l957, and nexT To ThaT was her Third Term program card. She remembered ThaT Term well. She saw herselT wandering Through The halls which were sTrange To her aT ThaT Time, longing Tor The securiTy oT The Tamiliar walls oT her iunior high school. As she Turned The pages, her TirsT Term aT New UTrechT passed beTore her. There was a swimming TickeT, an ancienT TOOT- ball pass, a G.O. card, a Sing scripT, program and buTTon, her parenTs' Sing TickeTs and a piece oT sTrange blue maTerial which was used Tor Noah's beard in ThaT '57 Sing. The nexT page recalled The spring Term oT ThaT innocenT sophomore year. There was a TickeT sTub and program Trom The spring concerT and behind ThaT, a program Trom her TirsT varsiTy show, Jenny Kissed Me. She couldn'T help buT giggle slighTly as she came upon The reporT card on which her TirsT RegenTs marks were enTered. l-low well she remembered ThaT TirsT Three-hour exam-Plane Geo- meTry, Friday, June I3, l958. ThaT card was The lasT OT her sophomore souvenirs. The nexT page oT her scrapbook held anoTher Sing scripT, program, and buTTon. Alongside iT she Tound The large gold J and The black bereT which had been worn by The vicTorious Juniors de Paris. Lying beTween The pages There was an old season TooTball pass and she immediaTely recalled The ciTy champions oT l958. A pressed corsage reminded her ThaT This was The year OT SweeT SixTeen parTies. She and her Triends had aTTended a parTy almosT every week unTil They groaned aT The menTion of anoTher one. The spring Term broughT pracTice college boards and The MeriT Scholarship TesTs. WhaT could have possessed me? she ThoughT, as she recalled geTTing up aT 6:30 on a SaTurday morning To Take a TesT Tor a scholar- ship she knew she had no chance oT winning. She Tound anoTher reporT card boasTing more RegenTs marks-The lasT reminder oT her iunior year. There wasn'T much leTT in The scrapbook. As a senior, she had been Too busy To devoTe much Time To her souvenirs. She Tound anoTher Sing scripT, program, and buTTon, and Then she looked around her.
