Principal's Message Dear GraduaTes: We live in a world ThaT is conTused and confusing. The acTions oT Mr. Khrushchev, The policies oT business corporaTions, The discoveries of scienTisTs, The social preiu- dices oT afher people-all These and many oTher Torces over which we as individuals have liTTle or no conTrol, sTrongly aTlecT our lives. These Torces are diTFiculT To con- Tend wiTh, and almosT Too complex To un- dersTand. IT is easy To see why some peo- ple give up in despair, Turn away Trom concern over These Things, and devoTe Their lives To The saTisTacTion oT Their im- mediaTe, personal wanTs. BuT if we do This, if we make no eTlorT To undersTand and To deal wiTh The prob- lems which conTronT us, we are admiTTing +ha+ we are noT TiT To be ciTizens in a democraTic socieTy. And if Too many oT us shirlc our responsibiliTies as ciTizens, we shall have only ourselves To blame Tor The evils and iniusTices which may resulT. One reason Tor educaTion is To make people aware oT The Torces which aTlecT Their lives and To prepare Them To deal wiTh Their problems inTelligenTly and eTTec- Tively. GraduaTion Trom high school does noT mean ThaT you have achieved This goal. lT means only ThaT you have com- pleTed one sTage. You sTill have much To learn. As you leave New UTrechT, iT is our TervenT wish ThaT you will go on seeking knowledge and undersTanding. and make acTive use oT Them in your liTe as an indi- vidual and as a ciTizen. ISAAC HERSH
