We have no reason To believe ThaT These were men oT wealTh or prominence, leaders in governmenT or business, The arTs or The proTessions. lT is reasonable To assume ThaT They were ordinary people, like mosT oT The people whom you and l know. YeT The highesT oTTicials OT our governmenT wenT To ArlingTon To honor Them, and every year many Thousands oT Americans will pay homage aT Their Tomb. ln making naTional heroes oT men who in Themselves had no claim To Tame or dis- TincTion, we recognize The imporTance in our naTional liTe oT ordinary men and women -The greaT mass oT The American people. WiThouT Them our counTry could noT sur- vive in Time oT war. NeiTher could iT Thrive in Time oT peace. Ours is a complex so- cieTy whose operaTions, in peace as well as in war, require The cooperaTion and The conTribuTions oT large numbers OT people, working TogeTher. Our TuTure as a naTion depends on The skill, The devoTion, and The wisdom wiTh which we carry on our daily Tasks. As young adulTs, you will soon assume your responsibiliTies as American ciTizens.
