l Principal's Message During The darkesT days oT The EirsT World War, an American oTTicer, Then sTa- Tioned in Belgium, asked The laTe Cardinal Mercier: Do you noT someTimes Teel discouraged and lose hearT? The answer oT ThaT greaT soldier-churchman is my message To you. Perhaps l mighT, replied The Cardinal, buT you musT remember ThaT l am a soldier in The army oT a CapTain Who never can be deTeaTed. Nearly TwenTy-one cenTuries earlier, anoTher greaT leader Taced even greaTer danger. Judas Maccabaeus was The CapTain oT a relaTively small and poorly equipped army oT Jewish paTrioTs who were TighTing Tor Their very lives. Their independence and Their religion were aT sTake. AgainsT Them was arrayed The mighTy Syrian Torces developed under AnTiochus The GreaT and sTrengThened by his son, AnTiochus Epiph- anes, whose TanaTical deTerminaTion was To desTroy all Israel. Every Channukah sea- son reminds us ThaT here was anoTher CapTain who knew neiTher Tear nor deTeaT. NoThing less Than success could saTisTy him. Success has been aT once The waTch-word and The goal oT every young graduaTe ever since schools were TirsT esTablished. The GraduaTing Class oT January l956 is no excepTion. Each and every member oT This class hopes, and righTly hopes, Tor success. NoThing less will ever Truly saTisTy you. The aTTainmenT may noT be easy buT iT can be cerTain. The obsTacles ThaT we all Tace Today are as noThing compared To Those ThaT Taced Judas Maccabaeus or Cardinal Mercier. AlThough cenTuries aparT, boTh aTTained vicTory in exacTly The same way. All Through The inTervening years, righT now, and Through all The ages yeT To come, The answer To all our problems is sTill The same.
