PERSPECTIVE lust as the young chrld who wanders from the comforttng protect1on of hrs mother I too frnd myself lost ln the mrdst of a world whlch I do not com prehend I stare about 1n awed amazement grasp1ng lrantlcally for a gurdlng hand that w1ll steady me and lead me to safety I have entered a chaotlc world frlled wrth hatred greed xntolerance and 1gnorance a world whtch seems to be dedtcated to exterm1nat1ng 1tself Less than a decade after the worst confllct rn the hrstory of mankrnd the threat of global war IS agaln lmmrnent CIVIIIZGIIOH IS no longer at the crossroads but at the trafflc lrght of hrstory A socral economrc and pol1t1cal struggle between the forces of com munrsm and democracy has succeeded rn d1v1d1ng the world 1nto two oppos mg camps each polrtrcally and mtlrtarrly terntrng and thrustlng rn a constant search for some sort of advantage In a sense 1t IS comparable to a courtroom battle wrth each srde presenttng 1ts case although ID some cases the pre sentatron may be of a surreptrtrous nature When we are asked by the Jury What IS democracy? Why should we favor our system rather than another? what should we answer? Could we not say that democracy IS nothrng more than an attempt to apply the prrnclples of the Brble to human socrety? ls thts not a better phrlosophy than Relrgron IS the oprate of the people or The end Justrfres the means ? Whrle the drama unfolds rtself before our eyes we the spectators should ask ourselves Are our bodres and souls whrch are now th1rst1ng for the thrllls adventures and knowledge of hte to be uselessly expended on a battlefleld and forgotten before we have tasted the frults of lrfe? Should we fear our future l1fe and the multrple complexmes 1t brtngs wrth lt?
