A war with present weapons would mean the eventual destruction of all civilization. Our goal is peace. A workable peace based 011 trust and understallding. It is our hope that the gradu- ates of the next fifty years will not know the hysteria and fear of the present day world. This is an idealistic faith. It is in this spirit of idealism and optimism tllat we dedicate this book to ll0t only the New Utrecht graduates but to peace loving peoples all over the world. .l.B. EX Libris ..,.. We know, because we've watched thousands of other gradu- ates saying goodbye to high school and all that it has meant to them. You aren't alone in feeling as you do. All of us here at New Utrecht are going to miss you as much as you will miss the old school. We are very proud of you and your achievements now. We know we are going to be even prouder in the future. ' The world which you are about to enter isn't the happy, peaceful, secure world that We, of an older generation, had hoped to bequeath to you. lt isn't a perfect world. But neither is it a hopeless one. We have all hoped, prayed, worked, and fought to make it better. Now as you take your place in the unending struggle for human decency and freedom, we hope that we here at New Utrecht have helped to prepare you to meet the challenges you will face. We have tried to give you some of the information and some of the understanding that you will need to cope intelligently with the problems that lie ahead, both in your personal lives and in your lives as citizens of a democracy. We have tried to develop in you a reliance on reason and on knowledge as a means of solving problems, a willingness to suspend judgment until the facts are in, an ability to coop- erate, to work with others for the common good, a readiness to accept responsibilities and to work hard at whatever tasks you face, a genuine regard for the rights of others, no matter what their race or religion or national origin may be, a spirit of gentleness and consideration in your dealings with other people. We have tried, above all, to instill in you a devotion to freedom, a devotion so deep that it will permit no compromise with injustice or tyranny. Other men and women, in the past, have striven hard to create and to pass on to you, as your heritage, the kind of America you are living in today. lt is your task now to maintain this heritage of freedom and to work toward the building of an even greater and better America, for yourselves and for those who come after. Don't be discouraged by what you see around you. Tomorrow can and will be better. That is Americas promise to you. lt has made good on that promise before. lt will not fail you. With lames Ioyce's Stephen Daedalus you can confidently say: Welcome, O Life! l go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.
