'PORTRAIT OF A YOUNGMAN' THE sign read: Sahiof' I entered the iittie shop and hiinked for a few minutes trying to distinguish something in the gioom. From behind a narrow counter an oid man rose and peered at me with his faded eyes, questioning. I explained to him that my heei had come off my shoe. Wouid he tix it? Vvhiie waiting, I gianced around the dingy shop and on the waii I discov- ered a picture of a hright iooicing young man. He iaore a mari-:ed resemhiance to the shoemaicerg they must he father and son, I decided. The oid man iooiced up from his cohioieris hench and noticed that i was iooicing at the picture. uYes, that's my sonf' he said. 'tHe went to schooi. ixfiaria, that was my wife, she didn,t want him to go. 'What good is his coming to schooi?' she would say. it wouid he ioetter for him to help you in the store here and earn a iivingi Thatis why he had to come here with his ioooics and heip me repair shoes hut aiways with a ioooic ioeiore him. Sometimes Maria would catch him. Poor hoyi That usuaiiy meant staying up aii night doing his woric. As for me, I was giad when he studied. iViy Guiseppi to he a shoemaiceri Vvhy even when he was a iittie ieiiow i saw he was meant for something ioetter. I wasnit the only one either. One day I met his teacher. She said, 'iVir. Sahio, your iooy wiii do hig things when he grows up., His eyes grew hright for a moment hut dimmed as he said, HiViaria never saw things that way. i'ii never forget how angry she was when he carne home from schooi one day and said he got a scholarship and was ahie to go to coiiegef-1 My hoy to go to a coiiege-to go higher than a high schooi. But Maria didn't want that. 'When you graduate high schooif she said, 'you wiii woric. itys time you earned some money., uOne day the principai himself came and spoice to us a iong time, saying that my Guiseppi shouid go. it was oniy then that she would iisten. uYes, my Guiseppi iinaiiy went to coiiege. He Won two medais there. After that he taught mathematics. This iast was pronounced siowiy, importantly and with each syiiahie dis- tinct and separate. The general excellent team-play and remarkahte spuntc of such stand-outs as Nfveinherg, Friedherg and Wahs atso desewe extra orchids. -KENNY SOLOMON and BERNIE SACHER IN a gallant attempt to retain their City Championship an inexperi- enced Green and Xvhite hockey team was defeated in its initial game of the season against Jackson High, hy a 1-O score. Nvith hoth teams tied in an 0-0 deadlock at the end of the tirst period, Utrecht,s Nvatdman and Amhrosini pounded at the Jackson net hut could not penetrate a watt in the person of goalie Eddie tVIcCoy. It was at the end of the third period that the Utrecht icemen met defeat when a triple Jackson pass from tVIcAtfee to Green to Anderson gave the Jactcsonites their one and only tally. In the next clash the Bensonhurst stick-wietders played a thritter with Brooklyn Tech that resulted in a 1-1 tie. However, it was against htanuat that the Buccos went down to their most overwhelming defeat, as the highly favored Blue and Gold scored ,5 times against a scoreless Green team. Although goatie Det Vecchio tried gattantiy to heat hack the fierce Manual attacks, Blue and Gold tatties were successfully completed in the first period hy Sunden, Kollevol and McDonough. In the second period hlanuats Scheltenherg scored on a pass from Kollevot. The tinat hiue and gold tally was made in the third period on a solo dash hy Kollevol. Utrecht won its first hattte of the season elcing out a 2-1 victory over Textile. Johnny Amhrosini and Kenny Connell scored hrittiantty for the Utrecht six, with Katha tattying for Textile. Playing Jackson tor a second time one week later Green repeated its first performance hy losing 2-1, and the following Friday once more tied Brooklyn Tech, 1-1. -KENNY SOLOMON Led hy Ray Ettefsen and Captain Stan Kurz, the swimming team com- pleted its season in proud possession of the tirst swimming team victory in nearty three years. Throughout the season the tanhmen were confronted hy many practice proh- Iems. The tone triumph came in a thrilling victory over Thomas Jefferson High, 45-25, in the last meet of the season.
