SPCRT SURVEY UNDER the guiding hand of Coach HAtoie Ahe Warchaizer, the 1940 gridmen went through their most successful season since 1955. lt was a cam- paign chock futt ot surprises and disappointment. After dropping its opener to Nlanuai Training on a last minute desperation pass from Bernie hturphy to Pete Kostatcos, the eleven put on a winning streak that hattted the experts. For the tirst time in the history of the school, the Buccos engaged the Peg-Legs of Stuyvesant, at Ehhets tietd on October 15. With Freddy Vveinherg htossoming forth as a remarkable passer, the Vvearers of the Green ran roughshod over the Manhattan eteven to the tune of 15-0. Vveinherg passed to wo touchdowns. He completed eievent tosses of thirteen tries. Boh Eckert completed the scoring with a 58-yard dropicictced tietd goat. The following week the gridmen topped a strong Poly Prep team, 12-O, showing a diversified attack. Xfveinherg passed for one touchdown and Tiny Tom Tomasuto scored the other, as the two ted the attack. Red Potters and Murray Schreiber ptayed hriiiiantty on the line. Garnering thirteen tirst downs, passing for 152 yards, and running for 189 more, the Buccos ciimhed att over the Erasmus eteven on Gctoher 26, to take their third straight. The tinat score, 13-Q, was no indication of the superiority of the Green and White. The two highlights were a 55-yard run hy Tornasuto, and a 40-yard touchdown pass, Fred Vveinherg to Joe Fopiani. Max Vvotte starred for the Buff and Blue. This inspired victory marked the turning point of the season, for after Octoher, the hoys just coutdnyt seem to move. The Big Orange of Jefferson took the measure of the gridmen, 18-O, with Duhenetstcy leading the way. For the Buccos, Blair De Ntaria was outstanding, tilting in for hoth Tomasuio and Vveinherg. Ray Benza returned seventy yards on one of the ixickotfs for the only Green and Vvhite threat. The injuries in this game were numerous, and when, on the fottowing week the hoys tangted with Lincoln, Vveinioerg, Sacchie, Gold, Fopiani, Licausi, DiGiuseppi, and Eckert were either out, or in poor condition. Though they outptayed the Blue and Gray for two-thirds of the game, the Buccos just coutdn,t push over a six pointer, and the Boys in Blue carried to a 19-0 victory. Weight totd the story, the Lincoinites outweigh- ing the Big Green 20 pounds to the man. A weetc iater, the Bensonhurst Buccaneers had the misfortune to run into a power-packed txftadison aggregation cruising along in high gear. The re- suit . . . 55-0, tetts the story. Bohhy Barton, Herh Brestow and Co. were just too much for an aiready crippled eieven. It was a disappointing ending to an otherwise fairly successful season, hut it certain added an ettective finishing touch. As for the individuals .... Vveit, there was ati-scholastic guard Murray Schreiber, who is going to he hard to forget. And how vividly we can remem- her the famous passing comhine, 40 to 41, VX7einherg to Keatst Freddy Vvein- berg completing 48 passes for 82 tries to estahtish himself as one of the city's outstanding tossers. Tiny Tom Tomasuio. Hampered by head injuries aii through the season, Tommy carried the maii 68 times for 560 yards and an average of 5.5 yards per carry. Also to the ,41 eieven we leave Ray Benza, the speedy end, Biaire De Mario, a shifty runner and an accurate passer, and Joe Fopiani, another vaiuahie wing. The team operated from the famous unhaianced iine with a singie wing to either the left or right, with Vveiniaerg passing or running mostiy from the No. 5 hack spot, and Tomasuio operating from the 4 spot. Coach Warchaizer, early in the season placed speciai emphasis on conditioning and the fundamen- taie of foothaii, iater giving the fans a iittie hit of ragzzie-dazzle, the stuff they iove so much. In general, the hoys showed more passing than Utrecht teams have ever shown, and it was effective, as carried out hy Fred Weinberg and Co. F-BUDDY KATZZVIAN FOOTBALL played the English way, to wit, soccer, provided New Utrecht with another sweii team. The hooters hoasted one of the hest defensive teams seen hereahouts in many a long, lean year. Led hy Danny iViurphy, they ended the season in second piace with one win and four ties. A scoreless deadlock with Boys High opened the season, which was followed hy a Big Green victory over Erasmus 5-1. Ties with Eastern District, Nianuai, and Lafayette closed the season. The titie was won hy Manual, with the Vvearers of the Green tied for second siot with the Frenchmen of Lafayette. This season it mariced the debut of Ahe Feicher as the soccer coach, and a mighty successful one it was. The team was aided no end hy the fine piay of Murphy, an aii-scholastic hack, and by Ray iviichaeisen, Boio Anderson, and goaiies Gunderson and Gahrieison. -BUDDY KATZMAN VVITH the din oi a highly successful pigsicin parade ehhing into the past, the Cvreerfs highly touted hasiceteers loomed up into the horizon to maice their iong awaited deiout. Teeing off against Madison, the Buccos sheiiaciced the Biacic and Gold hy the decisive score of 45-27. High scorers in the tiit were Teddy Friedherg and Fred Weinberg, who chaiiqed up ten and eleven points respectively. Hopping off to 4-1 and 6-5 leads Madison was soon queiied as taiiies ioy Larry Jacohson and HSonnyH Vvaics saw ixfiadison in front hy a siim 8-7 margin at the quarter. Snapping hack at the second quarter, two-pointers hy Jacohson, Friedioerg and Vveininerg put the Bensonhurst quintet in the iead, 14-15. it was Captain Frido Frey who made his scoring dehut here hy sinicing four sudden points to hring the count to 18-15 at the half. From here on the game was lifted from the nip and tuck category as Wein- berg chaiiced up seven, Friedherg three, Frey two and Ruhin two in the merci- iess onslaught that foiiowed, for a final score of 45-27. One short week iater the Greenies clashed with the ixfiaroon and Vvhite of Lafayette, and vanquished the stuhhorn Generals to the tune of 50-25.
