This is an interesting coinciclence, Because ttiose of you who entereoi our school in semester 1, are the only stuctents at New Utrecht whose ectucational guidance I had the privilege of ciirecting during my four years. So, with you, exists a rather unique Inonci in my professional life. Of course you and your parents recognize the benefits that you have gaineci through your efforts during ttiese years. Your knowledge is Broacter, your mental faculties stiarpeneci, your attitude towards all vital relations more sympathetic, your health more rigorous, and your general character better formed than four years ago. Anal I am certain too, that your love of our tzetovect Country very definitely set. The patriotic development which you tiave achieved follows iogicatty from your knowledge of time efforts of our great Democracy to give you the opportunities which have brought you to your present state. Your Country has provicieci you with the buildings, equipment, and all the necessary facilities for your growth. The great ship crept furtiveiy on through the darimess. She who had heen a proud and nohie name was now a thief in the nightwicidnapping hundreds of frightened humans from their fate. And Fate does not often allow herself to he cheated. Inside the hoat hung an aura of daric gaiety. inconsequential things were discussed with feverish anima- tion. The important thingsHwhy and where they were sailing, what they were going to do if they reached their destination-were carefully ignored. A siim, hrightiy painted woman who had heen informed three weeks hefore of the great honor due her as the widow of a hero laughed over the latest fad in hats. A iittie girl was eating ice cream and demanded a second portion-fthe pink kind. The hushed voices and dark rooms muteiy told of the uniighted cave to which struggling civilization had returned. But the passengers did not solemnly speak about the air raids, the homhs, the tortured cities. They chatted lightly of par- ties, piays, good times, hooks. But there was a feeling that everyone had tightiy trussed up his hrow for fear that disjointed, half-mad thoughts would hetray themseives in his words and actions. So the trite talk continued. The suhject didn't matter much, and anything that hroice the silence was eagerly and completely discussed. Somehody suggested a game of hridge. The hero,s widow ahruptiy said she was going to hed. Ten minutes later she returned, eyes sparkling with arti- iziciai animation. She spoice rapidly and nervously. A girl said something ahout what she was going to do when they got hack home. A man started to say something hut checked himself in time. He couid not hide his cynical smiie. Nobody forgave him for it. Nobody Went to hed. Page Six COMET There were no stars in the sky that night, or perhaps the ioiacic despair of the heavens was so intense as to camoutiagetheir golden, tive-pointed hope. The night stretched endlessly on. The hiacicness was an eternal thing, something that wouid iast forever. They wanted iight as men have wanted food and Water and iove. Suddeniy a tremor of foreboding swept over the ship. They waited ioreath- iessiy, each afraid to voice the paraiyzing thought that Hashed through his mind. Then it came'-a slight ciicic, then a duii roar. And the iight, white foam angrily heat over the siowiy disappearing ship and then it was dark again. 1 Paris - - July '40 The fiery embers shine raciiantiy, reflecting the iast glory of ri flying city . . . So l must immediately talce leave of any thoughts of digital locomotion, as it is sometimes referred to in more varied parlance, and proceed to assail your ears and hleed out upon you every detail of my horri- ble plight .... To those of you who have not yet encountered this most unfortunate occurence, l will endeavor to ac- quaint With the ominous free loader. lt is highly clif- ticult to detine these queer creatures hut l must cau- tion you that they will hreach all the rules of fair play and play foul for a meal at no expense-malce no exceptions, for they are all strongly tained with a lceen desire for cuisine amenities. l will willingly give you all a hint that may spare you from pain and chagrin and may lessen your chance of hecoming one of the so many that are placed under mental oloservation yearly. It will do you good to heed my advice and perhaps solve the stirring enigma oi the ever present diver who has dug himself a final resting place in some clean niche in the dining room. Happy New Year! By ELEANOR LANDY and MARCIA PANKIN ONCE we were happy, carefree creatures, hut now we are hitter, dis- illusioned souls. VX7e canyt face our friends. The disgrace is unhearahle. It was the night of December 31, and all over New York people were preparing to hit the high spots. But New Yearys Eve has come and gone, and still we sit at home. The radio ta wonderful invention, the radiof hlared forth with: UHappy New Year, everybody. Vve know you're on your way to have a good time, hut, wherever you're going, to that party or that new show, he sure to drive carefuliyf, In desperation, we turned the dial, only to hear: Hello, all you stay-at-homes. VVe're all set to hring the best bands of the country right into your housesf, Page Ten CQMET This was too much. Xve could stand no more. Xve grahhed our coats and ran out of the house. Surely there were others who felt the same way! But no, the faces of the passers-hy reiiected no sympathy. They rushed past, either carrying food supplies for expected guests or ali dressed up to devour some of the same food. There was no consolation to he found here. Deject- ediy we were strolling down the street, when a dog fman's hest friend, the dog? came over to us. Not seeing the gleam in his eye, we thought, Here, at last. is a friendf' But no, even this dumb animal scorned us. As we walked along, our spirits were low. Xvhat was wrong with us? Even our ioest friends wouldnt teii us. Xve tried to tell ourselves that we were spending a safe and sane New Years Eve. hut what fun is it? Afraid that we might meet a friend, we decided that thereis no place like home. Home can he very attractive at times, hut not on New Yearis Eve. After we had counted all the Howers in the wallpaper, we settled down to a fast game of Chinese checkers. At the end of the twelfth game, we opened -!'99Qf'0-...fx 2 our eyes only to find that it was eleven oiciocio-still one hour to go. Feeiing very virtuous hy this time, we decided that the hour for New Years resolutions had come. We prohahiy wouidnit keep them, hut it would waste time, any- how. And it did. But of all the resolutions there is one that we solemnly pledge ourselves to keep. VVe hereby vow that we shall never again spend New Yearis Eve at home, even if we have to hire escortsf, Suddenly, the twelfth hour struck. Horns hiared, firecracicers popped, hells chimed-it was 1Q41 at iast. But it didnyt feel any different. We looked at each other, hewiidered. was this what we had spent the long evening waiting for? Over the radio we heard joyous crowds singing the words of Auld Lang Synef, but our hearts were not in it. HARMON KALLMAN PRIZE- WINNING PHOTO g MILT ROSENBERG CQMET Page Thirteen Popcorn In T he Pork By AARON KASS XVHILE ati the world is daiiy with the hoi poiioi of the times, i have sought respite from the sohhing masses at a Brookiyn park. And I have hrought with me a large hag of popcorn, naturaiiy with the ione intention of consuming every hit of the popped kernels, salted, and showered with oii, dripping through the hottom of the hag and spiashing on my newly polished shoes. I have not heen sitting iong in my splendor, munching at the contents of the greasy hag, when a peculiar swallowing that sounds like a pack of women dis- rupts my giuttonous pieasantry. I turn quickiy to see a large pigeon gohhiing up the pieces of popcorn which feii to the Hoor as I threw up the seeds into the air and watched them fail to the ground past my wide opened mouth. Fooiishiy, very fooiishiy, I offer a few kerneis to the wide eyed hird. His chest is heaved up and his heart is heating viciousiy. I imagine at this moment a huge creature expanding its imperious chest and thrusting it into my wry face. Fraught with horror I drop the handful of popcorn and quickly dash to the farthest end of the park. g ii am sittinglquietiy thinking transcendent imaginings of the siow and con- tented life I was enjoying up tiii now fl prohahiy looked iike some unfortunate of a triangle thinking of his lost inamortei when the hird returns and hrings with him a Hock of his feathered friends. I realize now that he had poiiteiy ex- tended, lo the rest of the cian, my invitation to feed him some popped corns. While they are husiiy eating the handiuis of popped kernels that I have thrown them to assuage their hunger and anger, i have found an escape to the edge of the lake. Here I watch the ducks waddie in their uncertain gait, and the swans giide quietiy and contentediy through the stiii water. Lost in this pensive mood, I empty the remaining corn into the water, and I watch the ducks and swans clamor upon one another. As they devour the popcorn I iook at the puffed seeds sweii up more in the water. I wish to myseif that I had those very popcorns for they are so much larger and so much more to eat, and ii I am to watch the deiighted progress of my stomach expanding and assuming a much wider circumference, then these are more than welcome. It seems to me, so to speak, that the daiiiance of eating popcorn in the park is iast dying out-and I don,t wonder'-what with having to share it with a muiti- tude of hungry pigeons, ducks, swans and other feathered giuttons, it has ceased to he a delightful pastime. Arista's term function, a slxating party, repeated hecause of over- whelming reception. Oct. 22-Senior class elects Caloinet, consisting of Romano, Peyser, Baslcin, Chisena, lVlagnil:ico, Ambrose, Gelo, Carlozzi and Fisher. Qct. 26,-Utrecht wallops Erasmus after seven-year lull as drum majorettes spur gridmen on to victory. Qct. 28-Utrecht elects its G. O. president, Sam lcooperman, who defeats rival Harvey Lemheclf loy 600 votes. Bell, Cohen, and Maurer are other officers. Oct. 30'-First issue of Utrecht NUHS appears after seven-Weelc clelay. Nov. 14'-Announcement made that Dr. Rogalin will leave Utrecht for Taft High School alter this term, culminating four years of distinguished service at Utrecht. Dec. QHG. O. Congress holds initial meeting. Reports on school hudget and expenditures presented for discussion. Dec. 15'-Seventy new memhers inducted into Senior Arista,-Dr. Leuchs presides. Dec. 14-Bugle and Drum Corps trophies lceep mounting as another victory is announced. Dec. 20-Arista distrihutes Christmas haslcets to needy families. Jan. 4HProm held as 100 couples crash the legendary 4oo. Jan. 10, 11-Concert again scores tremendous success. Composer of 'flut- door Overturef' Aaron Copland, attends. Jan. 15-Graduating editors of NUHS choose Jerome Balmuth as next termss Editor-in-Chief. Jan. 28-Seven hundred-odd seniors graduated in impressive ceremonies at Broolclyn Tech auditorium. Photo by IOE MAGED MARIE PETROCELLI Page Seventeen SPCRT SURVEY UNDER the guiding hand of Coach HAtoie Ahe Warchaizer, the 1940 gridmen went through their most successful season since 1955. lt was a cam- paign chock futt ot surprises and disappointment. After dropping its opener to Nlanuai Training on a last minute desperation pass from Bernie hturphy to Pete Kostatcos, the eleven put on a winning streak that hattted the experts. For the tirst time in the history of the school, the Buccos engaged the Peg-Legs of Stuyvesant, at Ehhets tietd on October 15. With Freddy Vveinherg htossoming forth as a remarkable passer, the Vvearers of the Green ran roughshod over the Manhattan eteven to the tune of 15-0. Vveinherg passed to wo touchdowns. He completed eievent tosses of thirteen tries. Boh Eckert completed the scoring with a 58-yard dropicictced tietd goat. The following week the gridmen topped a strong Poly Prep team, 12-O, showing a diversified attack. Xfveinherg passed for one touchdown and Tiny Tom Tomasuto scored the other, as the two ted the attack. Red Potters and Murray Schreiber ptayed hriiiiantty on the line. Garnering thirteen tirst downs, passing for 152 yards, and running for 189 more, the Buccos ciimhed att over the Erasmus eteven on Gctoher 26, to take their third straight. The tinat score, 13-Q, was no indication of the superiority of the Green and White. The two highlights were a 55-yard run hy Tornasuto, and a 40-yard touchdown pass, Fred Vveinherg to Joe Fopiani. Max Vvotte starred for the Buff and Blue. This inspired victory marked the turning point of the season, for after Octoher, the hoys just coutdnyt seem to move. The Big Orange of Jefferson took the measure of the gridmen, 18-O, with Duhenetstcy leading the way. For the Buccos, Blair De Ntaria was outstanding, tilting in for hoth Tomasuio and Vveinherg. Ray Benza returned seventy yards on one of the ixickotfs for the only Green and Vvhite threat. The injuries in this game were numerous, and when, on the fottowing week the hoys tangted with Lincoln, Vveinioerg, Sacchie, Gold, Fopiani, Licausi, DiGiuseppi, and Eckert were either out, or in poor condition. Though they outptayed the Blue and Gray for two-thirds of the game, the Buccos just coutdn,t push over a six pointer, and the Boys in Blue carried to a 19-0 victory. Weight totd the story, the Lincoinites outweigh- ing the Big Green 20 pounds to the man. A weetc iater, the Bensonhurst Buccaneers had the misfortune to run into a power-packed txftadison aggregation cruising along in high gear. The re- suit . . . 55-0, tetts the story. Bohhy Barton, Herh Brestow and Co. were just too much for an aiready crippled eieven. It was a disappointing ending to an otherwise fairly successful season, hut it certain added an ettective finishing touch. As for the individuals .... Vveit, there was ati-scholastic guard Murray Schreiber, who is going to he hard to forget. And how vividly we can remem- her the famous passing comhine, 40 to 41, VX7einherg to Keatst Freddy Vvein- berg completing 48 passes for 82 tries to estahtish himself as one of the city's outstanding tossers. And to the 1941 and ,42 eievents we can proudly ieave Page Eighteen CQMET Tiny Tom Tomasuio. Hampered by head injuries aii through the season, Tommy carried the maii 68 times for 560 yards and an average of 5.5 yards per carry. Also to the ,41 eieven we leave Ray Benza, the speedy end, Biaire De Mario, a shifty runner and an accurate passer, and Joe Fopiani, another vaiuahie wing. The team operated from the famous unhaianced iine with a singie wing to either the left or right, with Vveiniaerg passing or running mostiy from the No. 5 hack spot, and Tomasuio operating from the 4 spot. Coach Warchaizer, early in the season placed speciai emphasis on conditioning and the fundamen- taie of foothaii, iater giving the fans a iittie hit of ragzzie-dazzle, the stuff they iove so much. In general, the hoys showed more passing than Utrecht teams have ever shown, and it was effective, as carried out hy Fred Weinberg and Co. F-BUDDY KATZZVIAN FOOTBALL played the English way, to wit, soccer, provided New Utrecht with another sweii team. The hooters hoasted one of the hest defensive teams seen hereahouts in many a long, lean year. Led hy Danny iViurphy, they ended the season in second piace with one win and four ties. A scoreless deadlock with Boys High opened the season, which was followed hy a Big Green victory over Erasmus 5-1. Ties with Eastern District, Nianuai, and Lafayette closed the season. The titie was won hy Manual, with the Vvearers of the Green tied for second siot with the Frenchmen of Lafayette. This season it mariced the debut of Ahe Feicher as the soccer coach, and a mighty successful one it was. The team was aided no end hy the fine piay of Murphy, an aii-scholastic hack, and by Ray iviichaeisen, Boio Anderson, and goaiies Gunderson and Gahrieison. -BUDDY KATZMAN VVITH the din oi a highly successful pigsicin parade ehhing into the past, the Cvreerfs highly touted hasiceteers loomed up into the horizon to maice their iong awaited deiout. Teeing off against Madison, the Buccos sheiiaciced the Biacic and Gold hy the decisive score of 45-27. High scorers in the tiit were Teddy Friedherg and Fred Weinberg, who chaiiqed up ten and eleven points respectively. Continuing their quest for the coveted Brooklyn Divisional Championship the Utrecht quintet smashed through to their third consecutive P.S.A.L. tri- umph hy trouncing Manual Training hy the overwhelming score ot 47-21. With the score standing at three all in the early stages of the tirst quar- ter, Frey severed the tie hy sinking two touts. Vvatcs and Vxfeinherg coun- tered four more and Larry Jacohson ran the score to 14-5 at the quarter hy tattying tive. Utrecht completely dominated the second quarter with Frey ringing up tive points, Wake four. Weinberg two and Spittcowitz one.
