Ciba Qlumer Soccer I i VER since Mr. Yudell has taken charge of soccer the - ji sport has flourished at New Urtrecht. The team turned i1 , in a fairly good record for the past year, finishing second in its division and for a time threatening the leader. The -.fh a gii high lights of the past season were the victories over ? x Erasmus and Boys High, and, in a way, the tie game GD lf! :-3 with Madison. Chepacoff, an all-scholastic selection, Singer, W and Driscoll played well on the defense while Sperling, Schneider, and Withkoivslcy starred on the offense. Captain Emil Cerota was all over the field and proved to be an inspiring leader. Oscar Blumberg proved to be a good manager. New Utrecht has Kwon the indoor track championship four times in the past tive years and with the help ot Coach Barney Hyman is due to make it five To date the Green and White has easily captured the tew track meets that it has entered rather -K . Y . I - easily. The Eastern District Relays, the season opener, was copped with a mere 13 points. On the following Saturday the team journeyed uptown to annex the Stuyvesant Games trophy with 37 points. The Diocesan Schools meet in which the team collected 2-1 points made it three in a row. For the rest of the winter the schedule calls for the De La Salle meet, P. S. A. L. champs, Newark National champs, St. John's meet, Elks meet, Y. M. C. A. meet, Manual meet, Syracuse meet, and Harvard meet. In addition the one- mile relay will enter several special events at big meets. Although the schedule is very hard there is no reason why New Utrecht should go through the sea- son undefeated. The personnel of the team is as versatile as ever. Although captain Singer has been sick and has therefore missed the Stuyvesant and Diocesan meets Andursky, Katz, Sternback, Krosney, Ashkenazie, Mann, Furth, several promis- ing novices have carried on in his stead. Teitelbaum and Nottonson in the quarter-mile have been doing well, while Kaminsky, Hanke, Emil Friedman and several members of the cross-country team are earning points in Rosner's old specialty, the half-mile. The relays are well taken care of and out of all the track events the mile run remains the only one in which we are Weak. This yearls team is a definite improvement over that of last year in the Shot- put. Wurtenburg, Simnowitz, and Bonavita, promise to devel-op into another one-two-three-combination that will rival the good old L-abes, Adelman, Smith trio. Fred Wurtenburg in particular has all earmarks of a future Dave Adel- man. While breaking his novice in the Stuyvesant Meet the stocky shot-putter also broke a six year old record set by Frank Labes. It Wontt be long now before 1Vurtenburg will break fifty feet. At any rate, sizing up the situation the championship is a sure thing. . Twenty-seo en

615132 Qllumet Swimming f ' T IS surprising that a. school like New Utrecht With TES line swimming pool and its modern equipment Sh0111d progress so slowly in the yearly interscholastic swimming tournament. Last year Mr. MacDavitt developed a fine team that lead the league for a number of weeks only to lose it in the final in the last few weeks to Manual and Erasmus. u gf H' Src 'ss , -Q? A L.-5-sbt , '? '-15 I This year the team started out like a whirlwind, in much the same manner as la.st year's COII1blI13Tl0H- The team, led by Captain Arnold Finfer, easily defeated Jamaica and Lane in rapid succession, to assume the leadership. Flushing, however turned the tables on the Green and NVhite in the next meet. Madison, one of the weakest teams in the league provided a sensation by holding Utrecht to a tie, thus relegating the team to a position among the tail-enders. Since Brooklyn Tech and Erasmus completed the season of the Green and White by ad- ministering defeats there is little likelihood of rising above sixth place, this winter. However Manual, Jefferson, and Boy's are still to be met. A victory over Boys is assured while victories over the other two schools is not at all un- likely. If the team does not end up well this season, we must remember that next winter is another year and that Mr. MaeDavitt in time, may convince the swimmers that they are not all wet.
