W alll P19 Af im if is 5 1 i 5 57 Hu Once upon a time three years ago, a group of NT-W students who couldn't refrain from talking about philately and numismatics got together, discovered that the fluctuating values of stamps and coins were perenially interesting, found themselves a sponsor, biology teacher Mr. Robert Lowe, and became the STAMP AND COIN CLUB, one of West's first officially chartered clubs. This year, under the direction of their officers: Clamore Eberle, president: Fred Ash, vice-president, Richard Small, secretary, and Brian Alexander, trea- surer, they held regular meetings where members could trade commemorative stamps and coins, spon- sored a booth at the Halloween party, and lived happily ever after lat least for 1967-681. The purpose of SCIENCE CLUB is not only to have lectures, but to a certain degree, individualized interest work with discussions of results. According to spon- sor Mr. Robert Koonz, The students spent most of their time on individual scientific projects. This year the club, which has a membership of 20, sponsored a lecture on cancer by a famous doctor from Evanston hospital which over 60 people attended. Science club also sponsored a successful hand-writing analysis booth at the Halloween party. You name it, we play it, was unwritten law for members of the STRATEGY CLUB. Newly formed this year, the club included nearly 30 members, who made complicated plans for such games as chess, Tactics II, Africa Korps, and other games that test the cunning of a player. Faculty members have come to the club sponsored by Mr. Howard Marz for advice on how to play complicated games. Officers this year were Clamore Eberle, presidentg Doug Bohrer, vice-presidentg and Brian Alex- ander, secretary-treasurer. li... ff W? IM' Chess is a game not only for squares, but also a game for kings, queens, bishops, knights and board members. With this philosophy, CHESS CLUB President Jim Bessen defined the art of mental combat known as chess. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Jack Gerol, members of the club met weekly to challenge their wits and their foes on the gaming tables of the Student Commons. Chess club also formed a team which participated in 14 interscholastic meets this year. 83

ia f I Ma Would-be scientists carried their imaginations out of the lab and into the realm of fantasy by participating in the logical insanity of the SCIENCE FICTION CLUB. In addition to holding book dis- cussions and analyses of other science fiction masterpieces, the club showed the movie The Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge at the Halloween party. Mr. Jim Treat sponsored the club, officers were David Lee, presidentg Loren Joseph, vice-president, Meryl Perlman, secretary, and Bob Epstein, trea- surer. ffl- m fI'I', ,,, g ' alsri fffy STUDENT FORUM was the place this year to let off steam. The club met in dis- cussion on subjects ranging from Viet Nam to scientology under the direction of Co-chairmen Peter Creticos, Andrea Berk- son, and Judy Lansing. Other officers were Bob Hoyt, head of book discussiong Joy Fisher and Dave McNelIyg head of films and screens, and Susan Wright and Steven Lukes, heads of publicity. Spon- sors were Miss Darlene Emmert and Mr. Jack Mattox. The talent of the JAZZ ENSEMBLE, a group of 23 musicians directed by student leader Bill Kroeger, prompted Sponsor Mr. Roger Mills to say, The ensemble is without a doubt one of the best around. A proof of this state- ment was their invitation to participate in the Oak Lawn National Jazz Festival contest with 80 other jazz ensembles from across the nation. In this contest they performed for the first time anywhere an original piece, The Professor, by Professor David Baker of Indiana university.
