A typical American, said Julia Mitchell, Britisher and NT-W's first AFS exchange student, wears sun- glasses, smokes cigars, and carries a Polaroid camera -or so I thought before coming to the United States under AFS. And it was this bringing of international under- standing that Jane Coleman, president of West's chapter of the AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE, referred to when she said, AFS is an organization with a purpose. To help Julia not only learn the ways of America but also explain the customs of her native country--and to raise money for future exchange students-AFS sponsored a Guy Fawkes day cele- bration, candle, candy and Christmas tree sales, and an AFS weekend. Formed last year, the AESCULAPIANS are dedicated, like the Hippocrites, to science. This year the club sponsored, among other things, an excursion to the University of Illinois Medical Center Complex, the largest in the world. There, participants toured the facilities and listened to famous doctors. All 15 members of the club were deeply in- terested in the field of medicine. Presi- dent this year was Stuart ltking Mr. George Wagner was sponsor. , To climax INSTRUCTIONAL TELEVISlON's second full season, the station presented an en- tirely student-written, produced, and directed special which was telecast to the township this spring. Under the direction of West ITV Student Co- ordinator Kathy Lemon, West crews helped in the production of many of the educational station's shows this year.

You name it, we play it, was unwritten law for members of the STRATEGY CLUB. Newly formed this year, the club included nearly 30 members, who made complicated plans for such games as chess, Tactics II, Africa Korps, and other games that test the cunning of a player. Faculty members have come to the club sponsored by Mr. Howard Marz for advice on how to play complicated games. Officers this year were Clamore Eberle, presidentg Doug Bohrer, vice-presidentg and Brian Alex- ander, secretary-treasurer. li... ff W? IM' Chess is a game not only for squares, but also a game for kings, queens, bishops, knights and board members. With this philosophy, CHESS CLUB President Jim Bessen defined the art of mental combat known as chess. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Jack Gerol, members of the club met weekly to challenge their wits and their foes on the gaming tables of the Student Commons. Chess club also formed a team which participated in 14 interscholastic meets this year. 83
