This year, Student Council gave students the responsibilities that they must learn to handle as young adults. To give seniors the opportunity to use their free time as they saw fit, Council passed the Senior Respon- sibility bill with the hope of making each senior realize and fulfill his responsibilities to himself and to his school. Under the bill, seniors were not assigned to study halls during their free periods. Instead, they were allowed to go to the Student Commons for group studying or conversation, to the library for research, or to the senior study hall and the study carrels in the halls for individual work. Despite a few minor in- fractions, the system was a success, and this success goes on the already long list of achievements of our young school. Another major event sponsored by Student Coun- cil was the Code of Ethics discussion week in the fall. student council We wanted to get students thinking about an ethics code-what it was, what purpose it had, if any at all. Discussions were led by the honor committee in all of the English classes and an all-school assembly was conducted, in which various members of the student body and the faculty discussed ethics in relation to religion, athletics, and school life. At the end of the week a school-wide vote was taken on the issue of having a code of ethics for the school. The majority of students favored the plan and a week later, the final New Trier West Code of Ethics was adopted. Student Council passed many other bills, most notably the Cafeteria Supervising bill, which placed the responsibility of keeping the lunch hall clean on the shoulders of each individual. They also devised a system for keeping the student parking lot free from congestion. Who says Council doesn't do anything?
