ln the fall of 1964, 500 of New Trier's 1300 fresh- men entered high school carrying an important re- sponsibility on their shoulders. They were the people who had to prove to the township that splitting its fine school was a worthwhile effort, and that a second New Trier could function as effectively as the original institution. These freshmen elected students to offices normally reserved for seniors, competed separately in athletics, and began forming traditions for the yet- unborn school. They entered the new school the following year as the oldest class, the seniors of New Trier West still wet behind the ears. They plunged into the task of building a sense of spirit and pride with great en- thusiasm, and brought immediate recognition to NT-W in every phase of school life. In service, they instituted supervision in the library, study halls, and cafeteria. They set up a student tutoring system, organized a social service program, and held two successful charity drives. In athletics the West sophomores excelled, turning out fine performances in football and track, and bring- ing the school its first championship by winning the league title in swimming. Two fine drama productions were presented during the year, and West's first music festival was held that spring. The young leaders easily adjusted to adverse building conditions and succeeded in their efforts despite the lack of an audi- torium, a gymnasium, and a swimming pool. While combining efforts with their sister school for the Halloween party, the New Trier News, and Lagni- appe, West students sought to throw off some of East's hindering traditions. They formed study hall magazine libraries to relieve the overcrowded lib- rary and they encouraged participation in IM and GAA by sponsoring ski trips on the weekends and coed bowling tournaments during the week. More opportunities came the following year when the school had a junior class. West juniors helped establish the Student Commons. They wrote, produced, and directed the smashing Scrambled Egg of a student show, Potpourri '66. They competed on the varsity level in almost every sport. The all-junior de- bate team place second in state-wide competition, and juniors led the production of West's first newspaper and hardbound yearbook. The NT-W Guard began its service to the com- munity. The Performing Arts Division produced the school's first major production, Leonard Bernstein's Wonderful Town. NT-W received nationwide re- cognition in both academic and architectural excel- lence, and the school was honored at the fall open houses and formal dedication ceremonies in the spring. This year West became a complete school with four classes of students. The seniors have had the past three years to acquire the leadership that the new school required. They continued their excellence in dramatic, athletic, and literary efforts, but their greatest achievement this year was academic in nature. NT-W produced nine National Merit Scholar- -ship semi-finalists and numerous Illinois State Scholarship winners. Seniors continued to add new activities to the West calendar. They organized West's first Dad's Day, which included a football game honoring the dads, a parade of floats, and a semi-formal turnabout that evening. They combined efforts with the East senior class to hold two successful holiday dances, the New Year's at NT-E, and the Christmas formal at NT-W. They helped bring from England West's first AFS exchange student, Julia Mitchell. Finally, seniors helped make many decisions concerning their graduation and worked to present the :school with its first gift from a senior class. The seniors of the Class of '68 will leave more than a gift however, to New Trier West, they will leave their enthusiasm for carrying out responsibility and their never-ending desire to excel, qualities which they needed to build this school to its greatness of today, and which they pass on to students who reach for the greatness of tomorrow.
