Q-4Q cross country Paced by Dave McKirnan's outstanding running and fine depth, NT-W's varsity cross-country team improved upon last year's sixth place finish to tie for second place in the Central Suburban League. Behind McKirnan, who was voted all-conference, fine performances were turned in by Co-Captain Dick Lang, Andy Hunter, Randy Study, and junior Mike Ftauen. Finishing with a 5-2 record in dual meets, West surprised last year's champs, Maine South, in the league meet, and finished a strong second to Maine West. Behind such competition as state champ Lee Labadie, McKirnan finished fourth, and Hunter came in 10th. Next year, the team will be bolstered by returning varsity lettermen Rauen, Don Share, Marc Cohen, and Jeff Lindenberg, who can look forward to trying even harder for a possible league championship for West. sg' QF 'W 'Yr .-gf, ,

basketball Coach Mel Sheets and his first varsity basketball team opened the season like they were really going somewhere, winning their first five games. Although the team settled down after their opening winning streak, they compiled the best basketball record in the short sport history of West. The Cowboys boosted several outstanding indi- viduals. Tom Mustoe led the team in scoring, with Bill Solomon and Tony Domenick giving him help in that department. Jim Miller and John Burmaster specialized in maneuvering. Juniors Mustoe and Bur- master along with Fred Szymanski and Dan Wexler will form a well coordinated nucleus for next year's team. The junior varsity team enjoyed a good season, winning their games on tremendous team effort. Those players who didn't get into the varsity games on Friday played the following week on the JV squad.
