W. ,,.X, -W .-.M ...,....,.... Q Is the salt behind door number one, two, or three? he con- tinued. Forget it! I said, reaching across the table awkwardly. Oh! Spilt milk, smeared butter, and a triple! Mom! Whos gonna play fast money? I wanted to strangle him, but I restrained myself. After doing the dishes, I retreated to my bedroom and to the comfort of my headphones. Thinking of my friends who would soon return home golden brown, I reflected on my vacation, I had already been shopping three times, seen four movies, watch- ed endless hours of daytime television, and spent ten dollars at Tilt. By Thursday I had grown bored with MAII My Children and The Courtship of Eddie's Father, and had contemplated doing the math homework that I had neglected before spring break. I wearily opened my textbook as Mom yelled something about spring clean-up from the basement. I panicked, there was only one place to take refuge -the library. Quickly I stuffed my books into my backpack, threw on myjacket, and headed out the door. As the chilly April wind whipped my ears, and dirty slush filled my shoes, I thought, Ah, Wilmette, what a life! Q STUDENT LIFE 23 99990

Her entrancing smile and golden hair brightened his day. Herb's favorite class was English because Roxanne sat only two rows behind him. Herbert's friends urged him to write Roxanne a love sonnet. The next day after he slipped the note into her math book, she said, Your poem is so cute. Thanks, Herbert. Herbert was elated, he could hardly wait for English class the next day. When he smiled at her, she giggled. His male ego rose to new heights. As a senior in high school, Herbert knew it was time, time to call a girl on the phone. He nervously dialed the numbers. Hello, Roxanne. lt's me, Herbert. Oh, hi. How are you? Oh, O.K., I guess. Listen, l was wondering if you would like to go to the Homecoming Dance with me? Gee, l would love to, but Bob and l are going. l am sure we will see you there. Oh, right. Well listen, l'll see you tomorrow. Right, bye. He dropped the phone into its cradle and hung his head in sorrow. Then Herbert thought of his lab partner, Sally, and smiled. O STUDENT LIFE 25
