school. Weekends were just as tough, as Mom had to drive me everywhere and there really was nowhere to go. With the summer came my first job and my first smack of independence. As August turned into September, l knew the all-important driver's license was just around the corner. Bill was the first of my friends to get his license. I remember eight of us piling into his Dad's old Vega on a crisp fall evening in search of a party. Although we never found one, we succeeded in building bonds that even outlasted our disasterous double dates to Soph- omore Turnabout. Parents, teachers, and even strangers emphasized the intensity of junior year. Between late nights at the library, Junior Theme sessions, and connect-the-dot college tests, I also learned to really enjoy myself. The myth of Senior Slump was shattered within the second week of school. I found myself swamped with my normal school load plus the added burden of decisions about my future. College became the topic of almost every conversation. I was unsure and overwhelmed about the futureg and l was quite sure that I would never figure it out. My eyes were closing slowly. What I've Known For Years After coming home from work at 10:30, I grabbed a bite to eat and sluggishly opened my English folder. I stared at the assign- ment: A Describe below what you have learned about yourself during your four years at New Trier. Dazed, I stared thinking about what to write . . . Four years ago, I often asked myself, Are my pants too short? Am I carrying too many books? I prayed thatl didn't actually look like a freshman. Everyone in the halls, even other freshmen, seemed older and more at home. Lunch was always hell. I spent half of the lunch period looking for my friends. When October rolled around, I had a wide circle of friends and had even attended three football games. Nevertheless, I still felt a little uneasy around I8 STUDENT LIFE

Vacation - All I ever wanted The last thing I remember was waiting at O'Hare for my delayed plane flight, my shoes soaked, toes numb, fingers stiff, and teeth chattering. But now I awoke to the screech of the plane landing in the Fort Lauderdale Airport. I eagerly jumped off the plane and relished the warmth of the Florida sun. My family and I rushed to the hotel in our undersized and smelly rented car. I dragged our luggage to the room and unpacked. I had one goal in mind: to come home with a deep, dark tropical tan. I looked for my bathing suit at the bottom of my suitcase, where it's usually packed. Llnder toothpaste, pants, shirts, and shoes, it was nowhere to be found. Desperate, I said, Mom, I can't find my swimsuit. Oh, it's in the green duffle bag with all the other bathing suits. What green duffle bag? The one I asked you to get from the kitchen table. A look of despair came over my face. I thought you got that bag, Mom. 20 STUDENT LIFE
