Ticket to Ride l stepped into the car confidently. After working on an English paper for eight hours, I felt that l deserved a break. So l embarked on my weekly excursion to McDonald's. Dad knew that I was a good driver and trusted me with the keys. My friends talked about going through the ravines at 45 m.p.h.g they considered moving violations status symbols more prestigious than even the Polo shirt. But l didn't. While I was driving down the road at exactly the speed limit, a routine check in my rearview mirror reflected Winnetka tax dol- lars at work. As I saw the flashing lights pulse on and off, my own pulse quickened. Between IPDE and aiming high, l had missed a stop sign. Oh my God! Dad will disown me. l'll lose my license and never drive again. l know! I could hit the accelerator and escape. l've seen it done a hundred times on T.V. Or maybe l couldjoin the French Foreign Legion, they would never catch me! Wait! l have to get a grip on myself. Slowly, l pulled over to the side of the road and caught my breath. The husky young civil servant left his vehicle and approached mine. l slouched in my seat, the inevit- able had happened. Son, may l see your license? U STUDENT LIFE 13

As they drove through dense fog along the steep and winding ravine paths, Elliot, Alex, and Phillip brooded over their thoroughly disenchanting night. Although the evening was justly proclaimed a bummer by all, Sir Elliot, Sir Alex, and Sir Phillip remembered that many a Saturday night still lay ahead, the Trevs remained undaunted in their eternal quest for the New Trier weekend.
