Upon enTering New Trier each boy auTo- maTically becomes a member oT The Club and is privileged To The numerous advan- Tages ThaT iT oTFers, such as The luxurious club room wiTh The beauTiTully upholsTered chairs, The chess and checker Tables, a radio, and The greaTer spiriT ThaT is made possible Through This room. The Club is conTrolled by The boys oT New Trier as each boy has a voice in The weekly meeT- ings Through his advisor room represenTa- Tive. The oTFicers and commiTTee chairmen are elecTed by popular voTe in The spring oT The year and The advisor room repre- senTaTives are elecTed in The Tall by Their advisor room. These represenTaTives and oTTicers meeT each Monday morning. Following The TirsT semesTer, Mr. GaTT- ney organized a STudenT Council To Take ECHCES Mr. Frisbie DosTal Dempsey MacKinnon Phillips Fox Olson Kingery Kingsley Hildebrand over school aTTairs ThaT dealT mainly in discipline as he wished To give The Tri- Ship Club greaTer Treedom in devoTing iT- selT To aiding needy sTudenTs in school who wiThouT Tri-Ship's aid would be un- able To conTinue Their school work. AT The TirsT oTTicers' meeTing Three im- porTanT appoinTmenTs were made Trom The senior members oT The Club. Dick l-lall was chosen as The head oT noon movies which are presenTed by The Club during The winTer monThs wiTh an admission price oT Tive cenTs Tor Two reels oT comedy or exciTing melodrama. Sound Tilms were shown Tor The TirsT Time This year and noon movies were more Than successTul al- Though our schedule was inTerrupTed by The re-building oT The audiTorium. Gerry Brooks was appoinTed Dance Chairman and managed wiTh his coim- peTenT sTaTT Three oT The largesT and mosT universally enjoyed dances ever held under auspices oT The Club. The Believe IT or NoT dance was given SepTember 30 aTTer The TirsT vicTory oT The TooTball season. The clever decoraTions carried ouT Rip- ley's Theme and were TeaTured by The skeleTon Tan dancer. On February 23, The largesT crowd ever To aTTend a Tri-Ship dance paid according To The weighT oT The girl aT our TirsT pound dance wiTh The mess hall decoraTed like a buTcher shop. The price oT admiTTance depended upon The girl aT our Take a Chance Dance April 27. The girls drew Trom a box conTaining TickeTs ranging Trom noThing To SLOO. Bill Bowen managed one oT The mosT eTTi- cienT usher corps in years. They were acTive noT only aT Tri-Ship perTormances, buT did 20

Among The problems ThaT were solved was ThaT OT The expansion oT The member- ship oT T. N.T. To TiT The need oT The growing enroIImenT aT New Trier. The council decided, aTTer considerable dis- cussion, To exTend The number oT seniors chosen so ThaT iT would vary Trom six To Twelve boys and six To Twelve girls in- sTead OT The usual six boys and six girls. The number OT iuniors chosen, however, will remain The same, six boys and six girls. AnoTher Task handled by The council This lasT semesTer was ThaT oT The Mess I-Iall. A special board was appoinTed and commiTTees Tor each lunch period were placed in operaTion. Through This arrange- menT The mess hall was greaTly improved. The council was asked To rewriTe The sTudenT handbook and a commiTTee was selecTed To underTake The Task. This iob proved To be a very large one, buT was successTulIy carried ouT Through The Tull cooperaTion oT -all The members OT The I9 STudenT Council. This handbook represenTs a real achievemenT Tor The STudenT Council. An InTer-Schools CommiTTee was Tormed during The year wiTh James Donahue as iTs Chairman. The commiTTee's duTy is To pro- moTe good will beTween New Trier and oTher high schools as well as To secure ideas on sTudenT governmenT Trom oTher schools and To aid in The esTablishing OT beTTer relaTions beTween The sTudenT bod- ies oT The respecTive schools. In The shorT Time since iTs TormaTion The commiTTee had already visiTed and reporTed on EvansTon, Proviso, and NorTh Park College. AT The Time oT wriTing, The council is seriously considering backing The budgeT plan Tor New Trier nexT year. This plan has been advocaTed Tor a number oT years buT has somehow Tailed To be puT inTo operaTion. IT is TeIT by many ThaT in years To come ThaT The STudenT Council will become a powerTul Torce in securing sTudenT govern- menT aT New Trier and in building up school spiriT and sTudenT morale as well as providing The necessary link beTween The TaculTy and The sTudenT body ThaT makes Tor a well run, uniTied school. New Trier has always clamored Tor a beTTer sTudenT represenTaTion and a hand in conTrolling iTselT. They have had The leadership necessary. They have had The cooperaTion and The iniTiaTive. All They lacked was The insTrumenT, and now wiTh ThaT available in The Torm oT a council They are headed Tor new heighTs oT sTu- denT governmenT. ECHOES

We were all glad To see Charles DosTal win The award This year, Tor he cerTainly deserved The honor. Large sums oT money are necessary To carry on The Club's exTensive ChariTy pro- gram, such as aiding deserving boys To remain in school and helping needy Tami- lies on The NorTh Shore. The Tri-Ship Club sponsored The second annual STars oT The ETher as The principal means oT Tilling The Treasury. Many prominenT radio sTars, such as lrene Rich, The King's JesTers, The Dor- ing SisTers, and The Two DocTors, per- Tormed beTore a large and appreciaTive audience in The gym in OcTober. LaTer in The year The Club sponsored Air Commodore Fellowes who commanded The TirsT TlighT over MT. EveresT. Com- modore Fellowes showed his slides and spolce bo+h in The aTTernoon and evening. Probably one oT The mosT imporTanT oT The Club's acTiviTies is The weelcly giTT oT sandwiches To The NorThwesTern SeTTle- menT. From This sTaTion They are dis- TribuTed To The schools in The poorer dis- TricTs oT The ciTy where The need is Tremendous.
