This handbook represenTs a real achievemenT Tor The STudenT Council. An InTer-Schools CommiTTee was Tormed during The year wiTh James Donahue as iTs Chairman. The commiTTee's duTy is To pro- moTe good will beTween New Trier and oTher high schools as well as To secure ideas on sTudenT governmenT Trom oTher schools and To aid in The esTablishing OT beTTer relaTions beTween The sTudenT bod- ies oT The respecTive schools. In The shorT Time since iTs TormaTion The commiTTee had already visiTed and reporTed on EvansTon, Proviso, and NorTh Park College. AT The Time oT wriTing, The council is seriously considering backing The budgeT plan Tor New Trier nexT year. This plan has been advocaTed Tor a number oT years buT has somehow Tailed To be puT inTo operaTion. IT is TeIT by many ThaT in years To come ThaT The STudenT Council will become a powerTul Torce in securing sTudenT govern- menT aT New Trier and in building up school spiriT and sTudenT morale as well as providing The necessary link beTween The TaculTy and The sTudenT body ThaT makes Tor a well run, uniTied school. New Trier has always clamored Tor a beTTer sTudenT represenTaTion and a hand in conTrolling iTselT. They have had The leadership necessary. They have had The cooperaTion and The iniTiaTive. ECHOES Mr. GaTTney EsTes Student Council O Prior To The presenT school year There had noT exisTed whaT many considered adequaTe sTudenT represenTaTion. ln an aTTempT To solve This siTuaTion a sTudenT council was proposed. On December 6Th, Mr. GaTTney called +ogeTher a group com- posed oT one sTudenT Trom each advisor room. The new council was To acT as a means oT securing a closer relaTionship beTween The TaculTy and The sTudenT body as well as To acT as a represenTaTive group where maTTers concerning The sTudenT body were To be discussed or a decision rendered. The new council selecTed Jack Byrne as iTs presidenT and Brenna Hawley as iTs secreTary. The members oT The inner council were Jack Byrne, James Donahue. Brenna l-lawley, Mildred Waugh, Roy Demmon, James Donovan. JudiTh Cun- ningham, Mary Ella Waidner, Bill Snyder, Arend Knoop, and Jean O'Brien. The Booz inner council immediaTely seT abouT The Task oT drawing up a consTiTuTion and seT of by-laws: To acT as chairman oT This commiTTee The inner council appoinTed FosTer Gilgis. Near The close oT The TirsT semesTer The school decided by a decisive voTe To re- Tain The council and To supporT any and all acTions iT mighT see TiT To enTorce. AT The TirsT oTTicers' meeTing Three im- porTanT appoinTmenTs were made Trom The senior members oT The Club. Dick l-lall was chosen as The head oT noon movies which are presenTed by The Club during The winTer monThs wiTh an admission price oT Tive cenTs Tor Two reels oT comedy or exciTing melodrama. Sound Tilms were shown Tor The TirsT Time This year and noon movies were more Than successTul al- Though our schedule was inTerrupTed by The re-building oT The audiTorium. Gerry Brooks was appoinTed Dance Chairman and managed wiTh his coim- peTenT sTaTT Three oT The largesT and mosT universally enjoyed dances ever held under auspices oT The Club. The Believe IT or NoT dance was given SepTember 30 aTTer The TirsT vicTory oT The TooTball season. The clever decoraTions carried ouT Rip- ley's Theme and were TeaTured by The skeleTon Tan dancer. On February 23, The largesT crowd ever To aTTend a Tri-Ship dance paid according To The weighT oT The girl aT our TirsT pound dance wiTh The mess hall decoraTed like a buTcher shop. The price oT admiTTance depended upon The girl aT our Take a Chance Dance April 27. The girls drew Trom a box conTaining TickeTs ranging Trom noThing To SLOO. Bill Bowen managed one oT The mosT eTTi- cienT usher corps in years. They were acTive noT only aT Tri-Ship perTormances, buT did 20
