There were twenty-seven members, fourteen of whom were in the vocal music group, eight in the band and nine who played on the reserve basketball team. Our class officers were: President, Rita Forsythe, Vice-President, Don Lett, Secretary, Evelyn Good, Treasurer, Nancy Forester. This year we were represented in the operetta, Wild Rose. Our class dues were twenty-five cents every six weeks. Also, to get more money in our treasury, we sold refreshments at all the basketball games, which was quite successful In 1949, we became Sophomores, our class officers being, President, Ruthie Burgess, Vice-President, Don Lett, Secretary, Evelyn Good, Treasurer, Nancy Forester. Mr. Nathan Davis was our class adivsor. We still had twenty-seven members ten in the vocal music group, seven in the band, and seven playing basketball. Our class dues were twenty-five cents every six weeks. We were determined to increase our bank balance this year, so we sold scarlet and gray tape, had bake sales, sold refreshments at the ball games, and had a dance. Also we were represented in the Perry County Music Festival. We became Juniors in 1950, with Mr. Nathan Davis as our class advisor. Our class officers were, President, Johnny Beattie, Vice-President, Bill Spicer, Secretary, Jim Grandy, Treasurer, Buddy Wallace. The enrollment of our class had decreased to twenty three, seven in the vocal group, four in the band, and five playing basketball. This year, our class was honored in sending the high school representative, Ruthie Burgess, to Girls State, at Columbus, Ohio. Our class dues were changed to fifty cents each semester. We sold refreshments at some of the ball games, We gave our Junior Class Play, The Antics of Andrew which was directed by Miss Marjorie Carr, and we had our Junior Carnival. On May 4, we gave a reception for the Seniors. Also, we were again repre- sented in the Perry County'Music Festival. During this year also, we sent Juniors, Rita Forsythe and Ruthie Burgess to represent our school in the District Tests at Athens. Rita took the test in English XI, and Ruthie in American History. Ruthie placed eighth in the district and received Honorable Mention from the state. Now in 1951-1952, we are Seniors. Our class officers are: President, Ruthie Burgess, Vice-President, Johnny Beattie, Secretary, Nancy Forester, Treasurer, Bill Spicer. Our class advisor is Miss Edna L.. Price. We have twenty-one members, two having enrolled from Newark High School and from Michigan, and one coming to us from Logan High School. There are six members of our class in the vocal music group, five in the band, and six on the basketball team. Every- year our class has been represented on the honor roll. The class dues are twenty-five cents every six weeks period. We . sold refreshments at our share of the ball games and had candy sales. We have been trying to build our bank account so that we may be able to take a Senior trip. Where we are going, we have not decided, but we intend to make our last get together an event to be remembered. -Rita Forsythe - RUTH BURGESS Ruthie Qlf You Need a Doctor See Girls' State President . The things we have read, you wait and see, And now you know what the future will be. -Virginia Seybe rt- Class Poem GRADUATION The time has come to say good-bye To all our friends in Straitsville High, And then continue on our way To a busy, brighter, future day. To the many things we all have planned, Use the opportunities of our land. But, to reach our goal we must think and say, Success will be ours e'en though far away, If we do our share of both work and play. And to those who follow close behind, We advise that they always keep in mind The things learned here, to use in Life'-s School The best of these being the Golden Rule. So now we part, and smiling, prepare . Of the world's great tasks, to do our share, But though now we smile, many times we'll sigh For our happy days in Straitsville High. - Janet Downs - Class Colors Class Flower Green and White Pink Rose Class Motto THE SHIP OF PROGRESS IS PILOTED BY EDUCATION UNDER GRADS Junior Class FIRST ROW: D. Annual Staff Typing Class Eighth Grade Tests We were very proud of our Eighth grade last year when the results of the Eighth Grade State Tests were announced. From our school Gary Walker placed seventh in Perry County, while Marilyn Wallace, Glenda Seyffert, Rita Jo Graham, Patsy Davis, Phyllis Jonas, Jon Sanborn, Leatha Proctor, and Ronnie Forsythe received Honorable Mention in the county. We know that they will continue to make New Straitsville High School and their parents proud of them throughout their four years in high school and later in life. State Scholarship Tests In the school year of 1951 a plan was revived--with some modifi- cations--in which representatives of our school went to the district meeting at Athens, Ohio, to compete with representatives of other schools of similar size. The competition was of a scholastic nature, in academic subjects presented in the educational program. The choice of contestants was determined by their standing in elimination tests, which- were furnished by the State Department of Education and presented in the class rooms., The students who rated first in Lhese tests, represented our school in the ioliowing subjects: Plane Geometry Robert Lloyd American History Ruth Burgess Algebra I Horma Jewett World History Charlene Nixon Algebra II Dorothy Angle General Science Lester Ambrose English IX Jean Angle Biology Richard Wade English X Sue Seyffert Bookkeeping Joy Babbs English XI Rita Forsythe Social Science Don Plumley English XII Marian Smith All of these students are to be commended, and the school is especial- ly proud of Ruth Burgess, who ranked eighth in the district in American History, Bob Lloyd, who was ninth in Plane Geometry, and Marian Smith, who took tenth place in English XII. It very much appreciates also, that because of Ruth's rating in the district in American History, it received Honorable Mention in the state. The nucleus for the team was formed by veterans of the 1950-51 campaign, including Don Lett, John Beattie, and Bill Spicer. To this roster were added the names of Bob Lloyd, Buddy Wallace, Dick Wade and Pete McQuade, standout reserves from the preceeding year. With this material we started moulding our team. On November 2, after a month of practice, the Big Red cagers opened their season against Allensville and rolled to a 59-30 victory. Four days later we traveled to Moxahala and suffered our first defeat, 45-48. In the first home game of 1951 we chalked up a win over McLuney, 50-45. After swamping Junction City, N. S. H. S. pulled out all stops with an impressive, 56-51 victory over a tough Shawnee team. Corning Railroaders, our next opponent, halted our winning ways by the score of 54-71. From there, the local boys went on to record three straight conquests, in-- cluding a thrilling overtime win over New Lexington St. Aloysius. ln our last contest before the Christmas holidays, Rosecrans stopped us, 55-66. Beginning the new year the Scarlet-and-Gray thumped Shawnee for the second time, 60-49. We gained revenge for an early season, defeat by whipping Moxahala in our next outing. Too much fouling led to our downfall in the Glenford game as the Golden Horde won, 36-68. N. S, H. S. reached their high mark for scoring in trouncing Thornville, 98-62 on January 18. In the most thrilling game of the year, a determined New Straitsville quintet upset undefeated Corning, 80-77. John Beattie led the way in this outs.tanding triumph with 34 points. A flu-weakened squad dropped two close decisions to McLuney and Somerset, before finishing our away from home schedule with a convincing win at Junction City, 93-52. In the final game of the year Glenford was pressed to the limit to eke out a 57-60 victory over New Straitsville. Concluding their twenty-game schedule with a record of thirteen wins against seven losses, the Big Red cagers showed three players with scoring records over the ZOO mark. John Beattie with his deadly jump-shot was an all-county selection. Don Lett our fine pivot man and rebounder was also an all-county choice. Bill Spicer, outstanding on rebounds and unusually adept at shooting proved another popular vote getter on all-county squads. Add to these three, Buddy Wallace the most improved player on the squad, Bob Lloyd our ace playmakerg Pete McQuade a tower of strength on both offense and defense, Dick Wade a scrapper from the word go, and you have the main reasons for the successful season. Hats off--to a great team that didn't know the meaning of the word quit! Our reserve basketball team ended the year with a record of IZ victories and 7 defeats. Exhibiting a great amount of hustle and spirit the team was in the battle for the county championship until late in the year when illness dealt a severe blow to our chances. Ernie Hamilton proved the bulwark of the team with a fine display of pivot playing and rebounding, he is counted upon as a standout for the varsity next year. Don Burgess along with Jim Grandy backed Ernie with smooth performances and consistent scoring. Jack iNye, Tom Jones, Bill Thompson, Bob Litman, Eddie Nye, Delmar Plumley, and Roy Azbell comprised the rest of the squad. All played good ball with flashes of brillance that could spell trouble for future opponents. Well done, reserves, keep learning and improving so as to be prepared to take your places as the stars of tomorrow! First Team Basketball Squad 'C I- Xxx +:f',, . , nn I f' 45 ' ,fsffjiyiwf Kiwi!!
