Kepleys and ot ers, emigrated from Salisbury, North Carolina, they named the locality in which they settled, New Salisbury. It was evident that these emigrants were interested in education for they were not here but a short time until they began building school houses. Perhaps the first school built in Jackson Township was at Hurstown on the banks of Big Indian Creek located just west of the south end of the old bridge and just north of Whitten Chapel. Another of the early school houses was built just across Little indian Creek east of Byrneville. There wa: also a school house st nding on the banks of Big Indian-Creek near the place where Jacob Elwanger's house now stands. The school house called the AHOWl6dg6 Box was another one that was built in 184C and was situated near the Thomas Eskew place, now owned by Sam Byerly. The first school house built in New Salisbury was an old log school house that stood on the present site of Coonie Adam's residence on the south side of New Salisbury. Prior to 1867 seven school houses had been erected and schools established at different places in the order named: Byrneville No. lg Greenbrier ho. Z5 New Salisbury No. 5, Routh No. 43 Knowledge fox, South of CTHHCCll No. 5, Hurstown No. 6 Crayden School near Ramsey No: 7. The Lahue School house also known as Mt. Jackson was built by Trus- tee Joseph Deweese in 1872. Some years later a new school was tuilt near 4 the home of John Duncan as this was nearer the center of the school district WHEH?Efee and was known as No. ll. ln 1866 schools at Eyrneville and new Salisbury had become crowded so the trustee Joseph Ueteese created a new district and erected a school building in the hollow a short distance below what was then known as Kip's Cave, later known as Carter Eyrn's Cave. It was called school district No. 8. This school was abadoned after the schosl year of 1874-75. The first school building erected in the town of Crandall was in 1888. lrevious to 1863 there were three trustees for every township. That year the law was changed and only one trustee was elected to serve the people of the township. Joseph Deheese who had been serving as one of the three trustees, was the first trustee of Jackson Township under the new law, and he served as trustee until January 1, 1875, being reelected five times for a term of two years each. John Isterling was our next trustee assuming office in the year of 1875. During the summer of 1875, Mr. Isterling had a new two room school house erected in the north end of New Salisbury, and abandoned the old log school house at the south end of New Salisbury and the one located near hip's Cave. The first school year 1875-76 in this new building, Leander Clay Adam was the principal and Silas Bringle W S t6BCh6I' of the IOWGJ' grades. Until 1850 teachers were elected by the patrons to teach their school some of the elections were hotly contested. No addition was made to the two room building at New Salisbury until 1904. Through the efforts of Silas Bringle, Clay Adams, Spencer Jenkins, Carter byrn, and Charles N. Dome and against much opposition a high school was started. In l9C4 a room was added to the two rooms that were built in 1875. The first principal of the high school was J. R. Ashton. In 1906 another room was added to this structure and this building remained the New Salisbury Public School until the year 1920. In 1920 a new brick building was constructed between Corydon Junction and New Salisbury and was completed in time for the school to assemble in January 1931. No addition was made to this building until 1938 when a wing was added. ATS 00057 4 go 50'9Wa4h5 20,0 .v. S df' QQ! IMN . .
