Kepleys and ot ers, emigrated from Salisbury, North Carolina, they named the locality in which they settled, New Salisbury. It was evident that these emigrants were interested in education for they were not here but a short time until they began building school houses. Perhaps the first school built in Jackson Township was at Hurstown on the banks of Big Indian Creek located just west of the south end of the old bridge and just north of Whitten Chapel. Another of the early school houses was built just across Little indian Creek east of Byrneville. There wa: also a school house st nding on the banks of Big Indian-Creek near the place where Jacob Elwanger's house now stands. The school house called the AHOWl6dg6 Box was another one that was built in 184C and was situated near the Thomas Eskew place, now owned by Sam Byerly. The first school house built in New Salisbury was an old log school house that stood on the present site of Coonie Adam's residence on the south side of New Salisbury. Prior to 1867 seven school houses had been erected and schools established at different places in the order named: Byrneville No. lg Greenbrier ho. Z5 New Salisbury No. 5, Routh No. 43 Knowledge fox, South of CTHHCCll No. 5, Hurstown No. 6 Crayden School near Ramsey No: 7. The Lahue School house also known as Mt. Jackson was built by Trus- tee Joseph Deweese in 1872. Some years later a new school was tuilt near 4 the home of John Duncan as this was nearer the center of the school district WHEH?Efee and was known as No. ll. ln 1866 schools at Eyrneville and new Salisbury had become crowded so the trustee Joseph Ueteese created a new district and erected a school building in the hollow a short distance below what was then known as Kip's Cave, later known as Carter Eyrn's Cave. It was called school district No. 8. This school was abadoned after the schosl year of 1874-75. The first school building erected in the town of Crandall was in 1888. lrevious to 1863 there were three trustees for every township. That year the law was changed and only one trustee was elected to serve the people of the township. Joseph Deheese who had been serving as one of the three trustees, was the first trustee of Jackson Township under the new law, and he served as trustee until January 1, 1875, being reelected five times for a term of two years each. John Isterling was our next trustee assuming office in the year of 1875. During the summer of 1875, Mr. Isterling had a new two room school house erected in the north end of New Salisbury, and abandoned the old log school house at the south end of New Salisbury and the one located near hip's Cave. The first school year 1875-76 in this new building, Leander Clay Adam was the principal and Silas Bringle W S t6BCh6I' of the IOWGJ' grades. Until 1850 teachers were elected by the patrons to teach their school some of the elections were hotly contested. No addition was made to the two room building at New Salisbury until 1904. Through the efforts of Silas Bringle, Clay Adams, Spencer Jenkins, Carter byrn, and Charles N. Dome and against much opposition a high school was started. In l9C4 a room was added to the two rooms that were built in 1875. The first principal of the high school was J. R. Ashton. In 1906 another room was added to this structure and this building remained the New Salisbury Public School until the year 1920. In 1920 a new brick building was constructed between Corydon Junction and New Salisbury and was completed in time for the school to assemble in January 1931. No addition was made to this building until 1938 when a wing was added. ATS 00057 4 go 50'9Wa4h5 20,0 .v. S df' QQ! IMN . . I suppose I became dreamy from the warmth cf the fire and sound of the wind for suddenly I was in a most peculiar world. Although I was walking very fast, I seemed to be getting no where. There was a bright light shining through the fog ahead of me. As I walked the fog cleared and the light became brighter and suddenly there I was--in a beautiful green meadow with a huge, white stone castle standing on the hill before .e. I walked up to the post which surrounded the castle, the draw bridge was lowered for ne, I crossed, and after wandering about the castle I Suddenlj found m self in the presence cf a strange king. I knelt on the scarlet, velvet carpet beftre the king and inplrrcd him to reveal to m6 what the future held for mg classhctes, the Senior Class of New Salisbury High School. The king assured me that he would do his best and bade me board his rocket ship and return to Earth where we would visit each memter of the class as they would appear in the future. First, we stopped at Hollywood, California. There we saw Louise Robertson styling Margaret O'Brien's hair. From Hollywrod we came East to Fort worth, Texas. In Fort Worth wr saw Creston Lckart. Creston had started his career as a cowboy, but wat now the owner cf the Ear EL Dude Ranch. He seemed quite content, surrounded by rich city folk who were :pending their vacations, Vout West.W he left Fort ttrtn anc flew over southern lndiana where below ue laj a long, straight, w.ite ribbon--highway IES, which h d been built under the sup- ervision of hillard saith, an engineer. he stopped in Corydon, Indiana, for lunch and learned that Auby Fyerly was happily married and that she and her family were living six tiles east of Corydon in a beautiful little hose they had purchased from WDccW Rodgers. 4 As we left Corydon we went south over the blue gross region of hentucky. TUSTG below us lay the most beautiful and picturesoue racing stakle in all cf hentuck3, owned by Juanita hfgner, whose horse NPat:y G. IIN had won the nen- tucky Derby in May, 1256. we stopped to visit Juanita, and indulged in a few Lint Juleps, while she ttld us that Lltyd holfe was now transporting sealskins in a semi-trailer truck, over the Alcan highway fron hehe, Alaska, to Seattle, nashirgton. we bade Juanita good-bye and flew on tc kich ond, virginia. while in hicunond we visited wayne hepleg, who was now a lawyer. we sat in warne's luxurious office and listened intently as he tclc us, with a southern accent of his important cases. wayne was called to court, so we continued cur journey up the coast to New york where betty Harrison was the star of the Broadway nusical hit, nCarouselN. She was enjoying entertaining New !ork's millionaire playbcys. Betty asked us to stay and ses the baseball game between the New York Yankees BDO the Saint Louis Cardinals as our old classmate, Verne Eeacat, was the ace pitcher for the 'Cards.N However, we were forced tc decline her invitation as our time was ,rrwing short and we had to fly cn. we crossed the Atlantic Ocean and linded in Dublin, Ireland, to find that Calvin Davis was eaplcyed as keeper of the Blarney Store. After listening to a bit of blarney from Calvin we flew cn to Paris, France, only to see the exciting wonen's hats that had been styled and created by Tommy Lotich. ' .359 N . So away we flew to Haiti, where I was leader of an exploring party who had come to this island to study the lives and customs of the natives. As I walked nearer the nat1ve's meeting glace in the dark, dense, dank- smelling jungle I could hear their drums gradually growing louder--until suddenly there was one great'loud crash! I awoke, startled, realizing that I had fallen asleep and dreamed--until the M' knocked the vase off of the mantle. -- Billie Davis Wanted: A good tractor, by Creston, for pulling cars out of mud roads. Wanted: Any subject for Eight Ball to argue about in any class. Wanted: A subject Juanita doesn't know something about. Lost: One Georgetown class ring about the twenty-fifth of January. If found, return to Ruby Byerly. ' Why doesn't a certain Corydon girl reveal her name when she cells Verne Seacat? Can you imagine Billie being bawled out by Mr. Fellmy? Can you imagine Calvin Davis, tall, dark, and without freckles? Can you imagine Tommy Lotich a quiet, reserved young man? Can you imagine Willard not teasing someone? Are we color-blind or does Louise really have red ha1r?? Why doesn't Ruby will some of her excess weight to Betty? This would solve both of their problems. Can you imagine Wayne in a temper tantrum? Did you ever notice that the man who drinks now and then usually drinks now more than he did then? If a lady slaps you for being forward never slap her back--sock her on the jaw. when I feel like finding fault, I always begin with myself and than I never get any farther. If there were 25 hours in a day Billie would dream of Germany, or would It be of Wayne? Never pick your teeth at the table. Merely remove your uppers and rinse them in the finger bowl. Many a stenographer who cares very little for her boss, just lives on mls account.
