MR GERALD JOSEPH DONNELLY At some ttme or another a mtn appears among hts fellovt men so endowed wtth the prtnctples of clean ltxtng and good sportsmanshtp that he stands over and above them Such a man vt ts Gerald oseph Donnelly dtrector of he tlth and phystctl educatton tn the New Rochelle publtc schools stnce 1947 Wlten he dted December 8 1951 at the age of 47 the news echoed throughout the st tte tnd left a tratl of stunned md stddened frtends In the normal course of events 1 man ltke Mr Donnelly ptsses on ts mtssed for a vnhtle and then stnks tnto obltxton But hts ts not the usutl ease He gave too much of htmself to be soon forgotten Mr Donnelly s mttn tnterest was tn young people He loxed sports he loved sports manshtp more He gave hts all to hts teams and they tn turn gave the best they had Mr Donnelly was dtreetor of phystcal educatton and coach tn Gowanda Massena and Glens Falls New York before he came to New Rochelle At each of these htgh schools he coached football and track tn addttton to hts admtntstrattve duttes Hts grtdtron record tn 18 years tncluded 117 games vton 15 lost and ntne unbeaten teams At Glens Falls he took a team that had newer won a champtonshtp and molded tt tnto a team that won or tted for the conference and area champtonshtps four out of five years At Massena he turned out a track team that was unbeaten tn any ktnd of competttton for stx years Uncle Gerry as those who knew htm affecttonately called htm opened hts home every Sunday to the players on hts teams He got to know them tnttmately thetr problems were hts problems thetr worrtes were hts worrtes Hts players vtrtually worshtpped htm for he gave each player a fatth tn htmself and an exempltficatton of clean ltvtng After hts death hundreds of letters poured tn from hts former players each letter potnttng up another example of Gerry Donnellys conttnued tnfluence over hts former players Uncle Gerry was a rare tndtvtdual He worked hts way through college attended the Savage School of Phystcal Educatton and then Teacher s College of Columbta Untverstty where he got hts B S and hts M A and dtd hts restdence work on hts Ph D He attended coachtng schools under such all ttme greats as Knute Rockne and Bob Zuppke When he dted Gerry Donnelly was only a thests away from hts doctorate Mr Donnelly ts known upstate as the father of the first tce carntval tn Massena and the Knute Rockne of Massena Htgh School In 1955 Uncle Gerry concetved the tdea of an tce carntval Wtth tnfintte pattence he tratned a small group of students The first carntval was a success and from that begtnntng has come the annual Massena Ice Carntval When he left hts post there he organtzed a second tce carntval tn Glens Falls Thts too ts now an annual event Uncle Gerry gave unselhshly of hts ttme He organtzed square dance groups tn each of the three New Rochelle htgh schools and devoted long hours to dtrecttng them Under hts gutdance the NRHS square dance team toured the county gtvtng demonstrattons tn many htgh schools and helptng them organtze thetr own groups He called for square dance groups often two ntghts a week free of charge all over the ctty and county The ltst of organtzattons of whtch Uncle Gerry was an officer and the ltst of honors awarded htm are nothtng tn compartson vttth the long ltst of students who are better people now because they knew so fine a man Gerry Donnelly loved hts work and the young people who were hts work loved htm Love does not dte 2 1 1 , 1 1 1 1 Y ' K 7 1 t l .
