Courses ranged from general math to advanced courses such as calculus for those stu- dents who chose a math major. Whatever the course. New Prairie students were able to grasp a better understanding of numbers and build a com- plete educational background. Selected students in the Math Department who are in Math Club have participated in a area math contests. Mrs. Karen lindley Mr. Rande McCammack 70 Developing a good vocabulary with knowledge in writing and other methods of self-expression were among the priorities of the English Depart- ment. Courses ranged from preparing and deliver- ing speeches to classes in composition, concen- trating on good technique of creativity in writing. Students discovered the ability to communicate was a valuable asset in many areas whether in school or out of school. Miss Christine Cortier I English Miss Theresa Wallace Mr. Blaine Gamble Mr. Ronald Colborne Being familiar with the political background of the United States as well as of other nations of the world, gave the students of New Prairie the opportunity of evaluating the formal govern- ments around the world. Learning the historical and economic development gave insight in to the present-day problems facing many countries. The social problems and the interaction of man to one an- other were also a part of the curricula in the social studies area. Learning how the mind works and the handling of stressful situations gave the student added knowledge to increase the ability to handle many situations as an adult. Mr. George OI on 72 Mr . Barbara Sandburg r Foreign Language Mrs. Alicia Miller New Prairie students who decided to study a foreign language chose from either French or Spanish. By studying not only the language but also the culture and geography of the native lands, students were able to learn and appreciate different customs more easily. Through lectures, tapes, books and speech, students soon found themselves able to converse rather fluently in a foreign tongue. 73 Mr. Tim Moffit Skill in the work environment are demanded by em- ployers. These skills may be acquired in the Business Department of New Prairie High School. Among these skills are typewriting, computer keyboarding, short- hand and accounting. Other skills, such as the opera- tion of basic office machines, getting along with co- workers and the acceptance of constructive criticism, are also part of the efficient worker in the business world. While many students take the courses in order to dev elope skills needed for employment, others take the courses to reach their own personal goals of self-en- richment. 74 Mr . WyneSc Hughe Business Mr. Jack Calhoun Through observation and learning, science students dis- covered the reasons behind chemical reactions and other scientific phenomena. By disecting in Biology, students were able to see how an organism functions. Chemistry teaches how science can help mankind and Earth Science provides answers to the origin of the universe. Whatever the course, a better understanding of the scientific world was gained through science classes at New Prairie. Mr Bill Spier 76 ) '7' 78 Mr. Dan Shead Being able to use tools and build useful ob- jects for themselves were goals for students in Industrial Arts classes. By working with wood, metal and other substances, boys and girls both learned skills that they could apply to building a necessary object or for a hobby. Objects built by students will provide many years of satis- faction as well as pride through doing it your- self ' Agriculture students learned new farming methods which provide better yields and could eventually wipe out world hunger. The applica- tion of these methods were also learned through experiments and projects. All aspects of farming were covered in Agriculture courses and students learned how to maintain a successful farm. Many students also partici- pated in Tractor Day ’ when Ag students drive farm implements to school. Mr. Jerry Colonese Mr. Don Kane Industrial Arts Mr. Don Thomas Mr. David Millar Mr. Harry Toleman ■ifl Mr Randy McGriff Home Economics Mrs. Ardefh Ross Designed to help students learn basic house- hold skills, the Home Economics Department involved classes on cooking, sewing, raising children, as well as coeducation classes, dis- cussing marriage and its problems, living to- gether and other topics. Holding mock wed- ding ceremonies is becoming a Home Ec. tradi- tion and was upheld this year. All these areas helped prepare students for self-sufficiency adulthood. 80 •ii. Mrs. Kathy Nova Physical Education Mr. Doug Snyder Developing physically as well as academically has been an important part of a student’s education at New Prairie. Supporting this doctrine, students at NP were offered classes in physical education with selected in- volvment in sporting activities such as swimming, bas- ketball. dodge ball, softball, baseball and gymnastics. Getting everyone involved in some physical activity promotes fitness of body which in turn improves the fitness of the mind. This activity also provided a basis for physical activities beyond the high school years so that the student would live a healthier life for a longer period of time. Supporting physical activities were the health classes in which the student learn about the benefits of proper eating habits and other activities to keep the body in a better physical shape. Mr. Michael Jennings Mrs. Rebecca Higgins Although Picasso probably has nothing to worry about. New Prairie art students have a surprising amount of artistic ability and talent. Providing decora- tions for school events such as Prom and musical, the student’s art work really adds life and beauty to New Prairie. Art classes help students develop their ability and make it possible for them to create truly beautiful works for which many students have won awards. Mrs. Yvonne Tofthagen Music FRONT ROW. While at Camp, the girls learned various techniques and dances which were per- formed during half-time for the entertainment of the spec- tators at the sporting events. Miss Theresa Wallace, spon- sor accompanied the girls to camp. Practicing two nights a week during the year, the Pom Pon squad found that the many hours of developing per- fection in the routines added enjoyment for the fans and for themselves. New Prairie has consis- tently returned from the contest with numerous gold key winners who are eligible for regional competition. Another high light of the year was the annual Christmas Art Show, held in conjunction with the Christmas Concert by the music department. The walls of the halls are covered with examples of the student’s work for public display. The club finances its activities for the field trips and additional supplies by bake sales. The activities completed by the Spanish Club this year produced an atmosphere of unity and togetherness for all the members participating. The beginning of the school year found the club hard at work selling cheese and sausage. After their experience as salespersons, they had no troubles finding ways of enjoying their earnings. They traveled to Purdue for a Foreign Language Day as well as to Casa Gallardo’s in Merrillville for authentic Mexican food. They then celebrated Christmas Mexican style after school one day with a party. And they’re not stopping there! The mem- bers are cooking up more activities for the near future. Possible excursions include another trip to Purdue for a meeting of the Indiana Assoc, of Spanish Clubs in April along with a trip to South Bend in March to see a program of Spanish dancers. Then then intend to have a candy sale in April to replenish their well spent funds. 93 O.E.A.
