NEW CARLISLE, IN 46552 Volume XIV TABLE OF CONTENTS GRADUATION 124 ADVERTISING 136 HAPPINESS IS . . . REMEMBERING ? As we review the past year, we remember what brought us happiness. It may be the prom, sporting events, graduation day or even club participation. For many happiness is just life. I hope you will reminisce on this year and remember what happiness was. what happiness is, and what happiness will soon , be. ' HAPPINESS IS . lOOHOS Ol 0NIO9 • • • SI SS3NlddVH PARTICIPATION! HAPPINESS IS .. GRADUATING IN '82 Mr. Robert Noel will graduate with the Class of 1982 as he completes over thirty years as a teacher, coach, and assis- tant principal. During his career, he has taught at several high schools before coming to New Carlisle and consequently New Prai- rie. His career involved teaching in an old boiler room where he frequently hit his head on the low ceilings. His coaching career included teams which won the county tourney as well as the sectional tourney before coming to this area in 1960. During the early fifties, his teams played those of Mr. Amzie Miller. We, the Prairie Life Staff, dedicate this 1982 edition of the Prairie Life to him — for his dedication, his perserverance, and his steadfastness during his career as a teacher, coach, and as assistant principal at New Prairie. During retirement Mr. Noel will have the opportunity to strive for happiness by ... Playing Golf. 10 Dr Keith Powe . Superintendent Mr Amzie K Miller. Principal Mr Cartes Stephens. Broke againi Efficiency in accounting, speed in shorthand and typing, and coherent usage of the business language were a few of the many skills learned and perfected in business classes at New Prairie. Students, whether planning to major in business or preparing a complete background for college, chose from a variety of business courses. Classes were based on different branches of the Business World and offered beginning and advanced levels of learning. 15 ENGLISH IS . . Mrs. Alicia Miller Mr Dimitri Gloss English courses at New Prairie stressed the develop- ment of vocabulary, oral presentation and coherence in writing. Students practiced and accomplished these skills in the required English and Speech courses. Many students then applied this knowledge in Senior English and Creative Writing classes. Students have discov- ered that the person who is able to manipulate his language into a clear and concise form through the use of both grammatical and rhetorical techniques has found the key to communication. Bill Haselton A foreign language was not complete without a coinciding study of the country from which that lan- guage originated. French and Spanish instructors aid- ed students in the study of foreign cultures by using films, records, and also by relating personal exper- iences. Through the use of books and tapes; each student was allowed to proceed at his own pace in hope the person would thoroughly master the sen- tence structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation to the foreign language, 16 HE BASIS OF COMMUNICATION Asking questions is necessary in Spanish It must have been a good joke! 17 HOME ECONOMICS IS ... Worn out from cooking? ond what have they been doing? Mrs Debbie Varga What does Kathy see in sewing? 18 Cooking, sewing, caring for children, balancing a budget, and marriage are all a part of post high school life. Students who were enrolled in our Home Economics Department were well versed in these skills. Girls and guys alike took part in Single's and Family Living classes. These courses featured group discussion on topics such as abortion, living together, and child rearing. The highlight of the year came when a pseudo wedding ceremony was performed in class. This year Leanna Bush and Tom Jarka were joined in the bogus rites of matrimony, with Rick Siderits officiating. MATHEMATICS IS . . . Mr Mike Powers If there are 40 people in a room and you pick any two people out, what are the chances of them having the same birthdate? Liz admires the way Pat figures problems An ''A , that's impossible! Mr Dave Feikes RATIONAL MEASUREMENT Miss Diane Jankowski In the beginning, there was the numeral. Certain laws gov- erned the numerals — addition, subtraction, division, and multipli- cation. Soon, numerals came to be classified as whole, real, or irrational numbers. As time passed, formulas were derived and new laws compounded old rules. Angles were bisected, parallel lines vowed never to intersect, and circles developed relation- ship with pi. The end was thought to be near when, abruptly, the math- ematicians arrived. Under their rule, the numerals worked togeth- er and became a necessary part of our world. For without num- bers and their rules, we would not have payrolls, markups, profits, the computer, the GNP, or the laser beam. Mr Dave Washburn Mr Rande McCammock Future computer technicians show their skils 21 SCIENCE IS ... Mr Jock Cahoun Mr Keith Kauffman Whether disecting a frog in Biology or determining what the velocity of that frog would be if dropped from the Sear's Tower (a physics computations). New Prairie science students were actively involved in a learning process intrinsic to the scientific field. Through experimentations and observations, students gained the ability to reason abstractly and to develop theoretical explanations of natural phenomena. Biology can be quite amusing 22 Buddy can't believe what he sees Mr James Wooisey Sue is not sure where her thumb goes 23 Is it interesting. Sharon? SOCIAL STUDIES Ingmar was dazed, Mike was stumped, and Ron was hiding, what a Senior Class! Roger is photogenic I Learning the past gives insight to the future, consequently History, Government and Economics were a part of the program at New Prairie which is designed to tutor students in the study of the political United States. Sociology and Psychology, the study of social classifications and man's reactions to society, were also included in the Social Studies department. Psychology students were especially fortunate in that they were able to make two visits to the Mental Hospital. Girl talk?! 24 MAKES HISTORY Mrs Barbara Sandburg Mr- Geof9e 01500 Concentration! Growing for the future has more than one meaning in the Agricultural Department — grow- ing or raising food for the world and growing minds to permit more efficient and productive methods of farming, and also the different agri-fields. All possible aspects of farming were covered in the depart- ment's curriculum. Students learned quickly and then faced the tasked of applying this learn- ing to various projects. Toning the muscles, establishing an awareness for health and increasing the students ability in basic physical activities and sporting events gave the participants in the PE classes a variety of activities which they may use throughout their lives to maintain their physical stamina and well-being. Miss Wallace. I won't fall! ART IS THE SKILL OF CREATING BEAUTY Mrs. Rebecca Higgins Miss Yvonne Tofthagen Scott's concentration may lead to a great career! Michaelangelos they are not, but the students in the Art Department do display outstanding talent as shown by the displays and the competitive events some of the members have entered. The masterpieces are often displayed at the prom, the musical as well as hallway displays. Providing an outlet for the many talents of the individual, the artist and sculptors let their true feelings be known through the utilization of color and design in their artistic works. This practice was also beneficial when selected mem- bers of the musical department par- ticipated in the state musical contests. Many members of the Chapter fulfilled their pledge of community ser- vice by ringing the bell for the Salvation Army during the Christmas sea- son. Cake raffles and work- ing the concession stand provided the organiza- tion with sufficient funds to continue their annual trip to Chicago and to the Drury Lane Theatre. Co-operation was a necessity! The staff made rough drafts, finalized them, wrote captions about every organization in the school, and sold subscriptions and advertisments. The production of the 1982 Prairie Life involved many hours of labor, some very tedious.
