PRAIRIE LIFE VOL I NEW PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL NEW CARLISLE, INDIANA 46552 DEDICATION It has been a very unusual year. Combining two previously rival schools into one united corporation under one roof was not an easy job. But amidst the panic, even though we didn't realize it at the time, the most important factor in the success of our school was being born. We call it friendship. We have become one school, accepting each other as friends and classmates, regardless of our former prejudices. Old traditions are gone. They have disappeared to make way for the new ones that have been formed in this first year at New Prairie. It is to these new traditions that we dedicate this book, in the hope that they will be carried on faithfully throughout the history of New Prairie High School. TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION......... 4 ACTIVITIES ....... 77 SPORTS ........... 33 ORGANIZATIONS .... 57 HONORS ........... 77 PEOPLE ........... 83 SENIORS ........ 93 UNDERCLASSMEN 117 CLOSING ......... 138 ADS ............. 141 Think back ... from the first kick that opened the football season in new-born September to the last pitch of a baseball in aging May; from the first word in a Latin book to the last page in an economics text. 4 It's been a good year. We finally made it through geometry—with a passing grade even! And now we know the slight but significant difference between potential and kinetic energies, thanks to the efforts of our chemistry instructor. Of course, no one will forget the endless periods we spent cramming for sixth-hour English test in fifth-hour study hall. 5 There were plenty of activities to keep us busy, but still we found time for leisure; to read a book that stood forgotten on a lonesome book shelf; to strum a melancholy song on an old, love-worn guitar; to have a good laugh, a good cry, become nostalgic, or think of the future. 6 Fall pranced boldly into our lives amidst biting, curling winds and gray clouds scurrying across September Skies. The beauty of the season increased our zest to begin school life once again, and soon we were caught up in the rush of marching band practice, elections of class and club officers, and constructing floats for Homecoming. 7 Memories! Can you recall the times we huddled together on the frost-blanketed bleacher in the chill of an Autumn evening? Our football men stood on the field like Titans. And we, the fans, locked heart and soul with the cheerleaders for a course in Mass Hysteria. But then, those were our guys out there—the mighty New Prairie Cougars— 8 Ah, memories. How sharp and alive they remain in our minds, refusing to die, lingering forever. We shall never forget the first winter in our new school; the unexpected vacations due to icy snow storms; the endless meetings for the Prom committee, cheerleading practice, musical rehearsals, wrestling meets, club conventions, and the inevitable homework that just never seemed to get done. 9 There was all the excitement of breaking in a new gymnasium, a job accomplished rather superbly by the Cougar basketball team. Our men sweat blood to make their school proud of them. And we were! 10 Our winter of '69 was an unusual one! Combining two previously rivaled schools in the middle of the year, and making them into one united corporation was not the easiest task placed on our shoulders. Those first wild days in the halls of the new n But proud to know we belonged; of being told over the intercom to report to homeroom and with a sinking feeling realizing we had no idea where our class was; of running to the office to get directions only to realize that we didn't know where the office was either! 12 We at New Prairie were lucky to have had an elegantly modern building to attend, a highly competent faculty to teach us, and an able administration to guide us; 13 And before we had a chance to prepare ourselves, spring came bursting into every window, filling every corridor, every room, enjoying the wild hullabaloo of its helter-skelter existence. It was a laughing, giggling time of the year, and it became increasingly harder to open a text book or memorize a new set of French vocabulary. Our minds wandered, interest turned to the harbingers of spring— 14 Our entire souls yearned to be in the out-of-doors with Nature, to smell the freshness of green grass carried on the tail of a mischievous March wind. And in grand finality, on a swift and flittering moment, came graduation and tears. 15 A book closed and a bell sounded for the last time. We stared blankly into our lockers. We listen to our own footsteps echoing as we stepped crisply down that last corridor, imprinting every detail of the past into our minds, our hearts; saying good-bye. And we cast our eyes to the Future. 16 ACTIVITIES MOVING Work, work, work! Getting settled in the new high school was not an easy job. Our boys were needed to carry in equipment to more than one hundred rooms. Slowly, the task was finished and we were off to a very good start. Is it that heavy, Phil? 18 Cheer up, Doug, only 300 desks to go. Everything out today Underclassmen Prohibited! . . . AND REGISTRATION DAY 19 Not Again!?! First line—Name! HOMECOMING Homecoming crowd cheers our (earn to victory. The sign on (he Senior float commanded (he Cougars to Sock it to 'em! And we did—35—72 The Senior players left the field in a blaze of glory as Ron Rowe banged into the Concord line, Doug Clark picked off passes and se( the stage for several touch- downs, and Jeff Smith scored on a crowd- pleasing 67-yard run. From two groups of candidates, co-queens were selected by the stu- dent body. The student body had a difficult time determi- ning which candidate to select as Queen from the many lovely candidates. After being introduced to the student body, the candidates anxiously awaited as their peers placed a mark by the person of their choice. The ballots were counted and kept secret until the Home- coming ceremonies during the halftime of the New Prairie versus Concord football game. The half finally arrived when the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Weaver, announced the Queen and her court. Fourth runners-up for the title of Homecoming Queen were Misses Cookie Lynch and Penny Sobecki; third runners-up were Misses Cyndi Moffitt and Linda Hartwick; second runners-up were Misses Diane Cross and Rose Kulwicki; first runners-up were Pam Oberholtzer and Donna Kern. Finally the long awaited announcement could be heard over the quiet football stadium—Home- coming Co-Queens were Miss Sue Crum and Miss Mary Hahn. FRONT ROW' Left to Right P. Overholtzer, D. Between games, parents of the Varsity basket- ball players were introduced to the spectators. At half-time of the Varsity game, the Cougar Cadettes presented an entertaining routine about past State Champions of the State Basketball Tourney. Candidates for Queen were introduced and finally the long awaited announcement that the 7969 Basketball Queen of New Prairie High School was Miss Donna Kern. She was crowned by Doug Clark, representing the varsity squad. The game itself was exciting for a double over- time was needed to determine the winner. New Prairie lost to Concord. This loss did not hamper the spirits of the '69 Homecoming which was high- lighted by the Homecoming Dance in the cafeteria. 25 26 Gening ready for (he auction ASSEMBLIES Don lights candle for Honor Society Installation. A BEAUTIFUL PROM 31 KING AND QUEEN LINDA AND DOUG Prom-goers were impressed by the beautiful job of the Jr. Class in transforming our gymnasium into a Tahitian setting. The Juniors worked many long hours making carnations and stringing crepe paper for ceiling. Tables were decorated with Tiki-god candles and there were coconut trees scattered to add to the atmosphere. The dance was highlighted by the crowning of the Prom king and queen. Queen candidates were Pam McCarty, Sue Kulwicki, Linda Hartwick, and Cyndi Moffitt; King Candidates were Doug Clark, Doug Stombaugh, Jeff Smith, and Don Nebelung. Mr. Weaver, Senior Class Sponsor, announced the winners, Linda Hartwick and Doug Clark. After the dance, most of the prom-goers changed into comfortable clothes. The Post-Prom consisted of snacks, the movie Barefoot in the Park and prizes. The grand prize, a portable tele- vision, was won by Steve Kulwicki. A breakfast was then held for those who could stay awake. All in all, it was a very wonderful night for everyone. 32 SPORTS FRONT ROW L to R. . Hill, . Smith, D. Clark, D. Stom- Bratcher, T. VARSITY FOOTBALL A smooth merger was the result of many grueling hours of practice and cooperation on the part of every member of the first New Prairie Football Team. The Cougar fans experienced many exciting moments throughout a season of rugged competition. Although it was not a winning season, it provided much needed experience for a team dominated by underclassmen. The New Prairie fans were given many exciting moments with many close games, the most exciting being the final double- overtime game with the Concord Minutemen. These boys had the honor of breaking in the new gymna- sium, and did it in fine style—with a victory! The team had a tough job in the school's first sectional tournament against LaPorte, but they came through just great with a small 12-point loss. In doing so, the team brought to New Prairie its first athletic trophy. Other awards were presented to Gordon Smith, George Schnurle, Mike Corbin, Gene Bates, and Dennis Richardson. New Prairie's first baseball team proved to be one composed of skilled and talented guys. Not many schools can boast the accomplishment of two triple plays and numerous home runs belted over that outfield fence by determined players. The success of our team rested mainly upon the long grueling hours spent after school in practice and the never-die spirit with which they entered each game. Claiming a first win over long-time foe Clay High School was one of the highlights of the season. For those who participated, it was a rewarding experience, and for their many fans, they will always relish the memories of those first New Prairie Base- ball games. SENIORS FRONT ROW' to r. After this, he is given a test that will prove whether he is capable to run the machinery accurately and safely. 59 Sponsor, Mr. Raymond Reed; Treas., Dave Neal; Vice Pres., Wayne Heminger; Pres., Wayne Truex. The choral department was changed a little this year in that we had fwo choirs, A Capella and Con- cert Choir. A Capella choir was made up of the people that our director, Mr. Walter Schalten- brand, felt were the best singers. Concert Choir was and will be used to prepare students for A Capella Choir. In this way, the stu- dents will get more music experience and will be able to handle the more difficult music sung by A Capella Choir. JoAnn Kitchenmaster, Bonnie Deer, Linda Hartwick, Doug Clark, Mike Wallace, George Schnurle, Dan Bowell, Mary Hahn Seniors at last! When starting our Freshman year, it seemed as if a lifetime would pass before graduation. Suddenly that lifetime is over, and we must look ahead to a new life. This year was like no other for the Seniors of New Prairie High. It was a year when new, lasting friendships were made in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities. Our activities were as usual the ordering of Senior pictures, announce- ments, and caps and gowns. But the moving to a new 3.5 million dollar building presented us with new excitement and frustrations. For the first graduating class of NPHS, it is the end of twelve long yet fleeting years of school life. We acquired not only a taste of life's little successes and failures, but also what is expected of when school is over. During the moments, the hours, the weeks, and the years we have spent as students, our minds and bodies have passed through endless phases. Now, as Seniors, our bodies have reached maturity. But mentally and emotionally we feel that we have just begun to expand. Our thoughts remain elusive; our moods are plentiful and unpredictable; we distrust the actions of the older generation but wonder if we will do any better when our turn comes to vote, to participate, to take part. The doors of our high school years are closed forever, but the doors to the future stand open, waiting for us to step over the threshold to a new beginning. 94 Bill Bartmess Gene Bates Greg Andrysiak 4 Debbie Bealor Larry Boniface RoAnn Beach 95 Connie Borkowski Dan Bowell Jim Carr Terry Brewer Tangie Carter Dan Buss Bill Cauffman Brad Childress Gloria Christenson 96 Doug Clark Judy Clark Lynoll Clark Sue Clessas Ed Colalillo Pat Conjalka Sue Crum Mike Corbin Jayne Conrad 97 John Cason Kathy Danielson Robert Davis Bonnie Deer Bill DeNeve Alan Dittmar Dewey Dolph Sharrel Dunlap I I Chris Dolph 98 Doug Dunning Larry Ewers Richard Fisher Linda Flitter Michaelyn Fuller Jill Caley Sandy Call Bob Gamble John Gladden 99 Sherrie Goodman Peggy Gropp Diane Gross Mary Hahn Nancy Hahn lenny Hampshire I ' I • i Iris Hardiman 100 Dennis Hancz Linda Hart wick Cassie Hauser Michael Hoddens Wayne Heminger David Hcrtzberg Pam Holer Diane Hubner Rick Johnson 101 JoAnn Jarrett Karen Jones Rebecca Jones Cherie Keehn David Keck Terry Kelley Gerald Keck Donna Kern Dale Kettring JoAnn Kitchenmaster Jackie Koach 102 lacie Landwer 103 Bob Lambert Kathy Lant ( N Connie Merley Deloris Meyers Richard Meyers 104 Mary Moss 105 Richard Moore Greg Mroz Charles Pagel 106 Deborah O'Laughlin Cindy Pavolka Ronald Peeples Ann Pentis Gary Peterson Carla Phillippe Ken Rhoten Dennis Richardson Ron Rowe 107 Beth Robinson Becky Runnels Joy Ryder George Schnurle Richard Shippee Susan Shoff Jill Skaggs Robert Scott Doris Smith 108 Becky Small Jeff Smith Jim Tanner 109 Doug Stombaugh Sharon Teska r Marcia Todd Amity Tuszynski Vickie Tolmen Mary Vermilyer Dan Watkins Leonard Wawrzynski Wayne Truex Jody Wagner Diana Weinstock 110 Ill Bretf Wolfe Jeanie Wood Mary Zika 112 o • ! 113 Mr. Gamble explains graphs. The Class of '70 was very active in all of the school's activities this year. Homecoming brought the juniors together in the building of their float proclaiming Cougar Power. The juniors had many participants in all of the sports offered by New Prairie. Always in large attendance they backed their school to the fullest. Near the end of the year, the juniors planned their )r. and Sr. Prom under the leadership of their officers: Rich Dodd, Ray Nickerson, co- presidents; Judy Thompson, Warren Carpenter, co-vice-presidents; Tim Geese, Gordon Smith, co-secretaries; Betty Brown, Dan Shead, co- treasurers. The junior class members worked hard in planning their prom. It will be remembered as the first prom ever given in New Prairie history. The prom turned out to be enjoyed by all. The juniors proudly look back on their first year at New Prairie and anxiously await the oppor- tunity to be seniors. CLOSING This year has been a time for building, experi- menting, wondering, shaping, and comprehend- ing. A time for laughs, tears, anger, happiness, and loneliness. Our personalities have come closer to knowing adulthood as we have come closer to understanding ourselves. 139 It's been a year that we will not forget. As we come to the closing of this edition of the Prairie Life, we wish to thank the staff and our sponsor, Mr. Max Haag for their cooperation in creating this book. We hope that we have captured for you the most significant moments of this very important year. Co-Editors ...... Business Manager Assistant ........ Copywriter........
