BASKETBALL We started om' basketball season November 1 1957 wrth a bang by defeating Wakarusa '74 59 Jim Neff was high scorer for the Cubs with 23 pomts On November 8 the Cubs traveled to Mrllersburg where we lost a hard fought game 70 '73 The scoring for us was well balanced but the Cubs couldn t get started early rn the game We then played the Goshen Redskrns on November 15 1n the Concord gym and defeated them 60 56 Tlus was the Redskrns first opening game defeat in 8 years Our next game was on November 22 wrth the Bnstol Prrates The Cubs Jumped off to a 6 18 first quarter lead and kept rt all the way The final score was 71 53 wrth scor1ng for the Cubs well balanced Ron Brookms had 19, Bob Miller 18 and Jim Neff 13 On November 26, we had our second home game wrth Jefferson Trgers They found the Cubs too tough wrth Brookins scor1ng 24 pornts and Neff 17, to lead the Cubs to the1r thrrd w1n, 78 53 We then took a tnp on December 6 to Jrmtown and found the game to be a tougher battle than the Cubs had expected It was double overtlme but we finally came out on top 52 50 Our next game was w1th Mrlford TroJans at home on December 13 Mrlford led at the ftrst quarter then the Cubs came back to go ahead by one point at half nme Then the Cubs took fire with a fmal score of 62 42 D1ck Hrbschman lead the team in scor1ng wrth 15 pomts The last game fore Chrrstmas was with the Wakarusa Indians. They turned loose and defeated us 69 50 On January 3 the Millers came to New Paris The score was 31 30 at the half w1th the Cubs rn the lead The thrrd quarter rally was too much for the M1llers wrth a fmal score of '71 60 1n favor of the mrghty Cubs Jrm Neff was lugh scorer wrth 25 Mrke Zellrnger had 19 The Jefferson game was played at Goshen January 10 It was a slow game wrth the Trger leadrng at half time 1 , but the Cubs took fire rn the tlurd quarter and oumcored the Trgers 27 10 We then went on to w1n 61 49 Laverne an Bob Mrller were lugh scorers wrth 13 pornts each The Cubs played the Slupshewana Scotues on January 11 for om' flfth home game The Cubs were really hot that night and scored 19 pornts before the Scottres were able to find the loop The fmal score was 86 68 wrth Ron Brook1ns 26 pornts hrgh for the game The hrghly touted Syracuse Yellow Jackets rnvaded our gym January 17 ready to sung the Cubs but went home wrth a 81 66 defeat Brook1ns was agarn lugh pornt man wrth 28 pomts New Pans drew Mrllersburg 1n the County Tourney and went down to defeat January 23 by a score of '73 64 Bob Mrller had lugh score of 17 pomts Our next game was wrth the runner up team of the County Tourney, Concord The game was close all the way the Mrnutemen leadmg at the half by four points But rn the last half the Cubs came through wrth therr eleventh victory of the season, 63 57 Brook1ns and Laverne Mrller each had 18 points On February 4 the Cubs traveled to Leesburg to play the Blue Blazers Jrm Neff was lugh scorer with 20 points as the Blazers went down to defeat 83 64 Our next game was w1th the county champs, the Middlebury M1dd1es It was a heartbreaker for the Cubs who were rn the lead by frve pomts at the half However, they scored only two pornts in the fmal quarter and were defeated 47 44 Laverne Mrller and Ron Brookms ned for scor1ng honors w1th 13 pornts each Brook1ns was agam hrgh pornt man when we played Bnstol on Valent1ne's Day The fmal score was 77 66 w1th Brook1ns getttng 23 pomts The last game of the regular schedule and the last home game for our semors was wrth Wawaka the Noble County Champrons The Cubs were trarling at the half but rallred to go ahead two pornts at the end of the tlurd quarter The Cubs fourth quarter rally was too much for the Warrrors wrth the Cubs wmrung their last home game 60 50 New Paris ended the season undefeated on therr home floor Zellrnger was lugh scorer wrth 18 pomts Last came the Secuonal Tourney The New Pans Cubs went rnto the tourney wrth a 14 4 record one of the best 1n the lnstory of the school We drew Topeka rn the flrst round and won easrly, 62 40 Brookrns was lugh scorer wrth 21 pomts Next we played the Goshen Redsktns They were out for revenge but the Cubs won handily 76 50w1th Laverne Mrller scor1ng 24 pomts The Cubs then met the M1Sh3W8k3 Cavemen rn the semrfinals The game proved to be one of the best of the tourney The lead see sawed back and forth many trmes Some uncanny shootrng by the Cavemen m the second half gave them the vrctory, 68 59 However, the Cubs turned in a very good tourney performance Ron Brook1ns was chosen on the all tourney team wrth Jlm Neff and Bob Mrller on the second team Laverne Mrller was grven honorable mennon The 1957 58 Cubs frmshed the season wrth srxteen vrctorres and five defeats, a record worthy of pralse to our coach, J1m Hettler, and lus Cubs At the Chamber of Commerce basketball banquet the followmg awards were made Free throw trophy, Drck I-lrbsch man and Bob Mrller sportsmanslup trophy, Jrm Neff most valuable player award, Ron Brook1ns Sponsors ARION YODER 8r SONS Goshen MAPLE CITY ICE CREAM CO Goshen ' 1 . , A I ' 0 .
