We tried to develop your academic excellence, a concern for the environment and your fellow man, a sense of community responsibility through teamwork and fair play, respect for our American ideals and heritage, and character traits such as honesty and integrity. Your success, in some measure, indicates we have been successful. However, the true test lies ahead of you in the many years to come. This year's team was quite successful in their league and placed fourth overall. Even more prestigious for the group was their fifth place finish in the Section 9 Meet. Because of their hard work and talent, all of these achievements were possible. Several members of the team received individual honors. Amy Heaton, Sandra Mannion, Aimee Dhus, and Jennifer Reb-han all received MHAL awards. Sandra Mannion also came in second place during the four hundred meter dash at the Section 9 tournament. All in all, the group made an excellent showing. The season held many exciting moments. One of them was when Amy Heaton took first in the Triple Jump at the MHAL meet. Sandra Mannion also succeeded in placing second in the eight hundred meter race. The most amusing moment of the season was when Shiloh Pileggi attempted to run without shoes on the hot pavement of the track. Surely, everyone was enriched through their experiences. Coach Art Stegan said that he got a lot of enjoyment out of seeing his team improve. Tina Cusa, Katya Kopaskie, and Shiloh Pileggi all made marked improvements in long distances, while Karin Ruoff and Kim Garman perfected their talents in field events. The team clearly had a remarkable year. Top R: Tonya Alston. Larissa Knapp. Marjory Kerzner. Aimcc Dhus. Laura Rebhan. Shiloh Pileggi, Catherine Campbell. Karin Ruoff. Barbara Reynolds. Shanyn Deyo. In 1986 the Hugie track team did just that. Many individuals won awards or participated in regional meets. The team was the MHAL Champions. They came in second in the Hudson,Chatham and Western Sullivan Invitationals. They also came in fourth at the Section 9 meet, where Gary Aulet lost control of a relay baton and threw it twenty-five feet into the air. The highlight of the season was defeating Onteora, 82-59. The Hugies broke a streak of seventy-one wins and one tie dating back to 1978. Said Coach Dick James, “They peaked at the right time. The team was well-balanced. Jeff Smith taught three boys how to pole vault. Captain Darryl Glover boosted morale and helped the team spirit. The key veterans Jeff Smith, Eugene Ruoff, the Guidis, Louie Yess, Joe Ingoglia, Darryl Glover and Ed Clavie blended well with the ‘foreigner connection’ of Matthicu Givelet and Mikko Hanski. The freshmen, J.D. Clark, Dave Rechcn, Phil Verdier and the newcomers Gary and Chris Aulet and Marty Barrington also made strong contributions. As for next year when the team is handed to Kees DeGroot, retiring Coach James remarked that he will have a solid team. Far L: Daniel Brownstcin runs a tight relay. They ended with a eight and eight record. They also earned a seat in the Section 9 Tournament, something that had not been done for ten years. Coach Jeff Ackert and the Hugics were justifiably proud of their accomplishments. The team was lead by pitcher Thuy Bonagura. She returned from a serious knee injury to win several games. Kara Peterson played a tough short-stop and Cindy Steele covered third base. The plays of the infielders were supported by the strong bats of Amy Blythe and Karen Schlegelmilch. The game against Coleman went into extra innings. Kathy Wright and Sheila Feldman both hit sacrifice bunts to bring the winning run home. The J.V. team also had a good season. Kim Koenig was the team’s strongest pitcher. The lead-off batter was Lisa Sfre-gola. Karen Primm played a number of infield positions and was a great asset to the team. The girls played an excellent game against Red Hook in which they caught up from twenty runs behind. The Huguenot Softball teams played a great season. The girls grew together as a family, became great friends and participated in one of America’s most popular sports. Varsity J.V. Softball Top: Cathy Pidcl, Lori Knoth, Karen Schlegelmilch. SO Varsity Baseball Boys’ Tennis The members of the 1986 varsity baseball team had an excellent season. Their winning record won them a Section 9 playoff berth. Although the team was defeated in the first round by Cornwall, they were very satisfied with their season. The Hugies fielded a well-balanced team. The offensive attack was lead by “red hot batters Jimmy Dodd, Pete Rubin and Chuck Hines. On the diamond Phil Driscoll, Paul Mele and Dan Wood headed the defensive play. This year’s team had several brilliant victories. When the Hugies played the Marlboro Dukes, they won the game in extra innings. The team pulled through by putting on their “rally-caps” in the seventh. That victory might have been hard to achieve, but the most satisfying win came from state-ranked Warwick. In this game, Paul Mele hit the game winning run leading to an exciting Hugie finish. All in all. baseball and the Hugies were an outstanding mix. Top: Coach Freer. Rob Fuller, Gabc Coleman, Rawn Salcnger. Dennis Peters. Mike Trensky and Rick Bunt. Right: Coach Pat F.rnc. One sport the Hugies have dominated is tennis. In 1986, the boy’s team was 11-0 and won the MHAL Championship for the second year in a row. As a group the Hugies did extremely well. They trounced Ellenvillc, a strong competitor and defeated NYMA and Onteora, both equally strong opponents. Individually they were even better. Michael Trensky was named to the All-MHAL team at his first tournament. He won the first single's championship with a tie-breaking match and placed fourth at the Section 9 match. While playing in the MHAL tournament, Dennis Peters sprained his ankle. He was named to the All-MHAL team at second singles, but his injury kept him from placing into the Section 9 meet. Ricky Bunt, Gabe Coleman, Rawn Salenger, Robbie Fuller and Dan Schneider also participated in the MHAL match. Field hockey is an amazing game of skill and endurance. This year’s team showed both of these qualities. The 1986 Hugies had one of their best seasons ever. Coach Nick Gantner built the team with sophomores, juniors and seniors and the product was great. The offense, composed of players Larisa Yusko, Jenni Ack-ert and Sheila Feldman, moved the ball well upfield. The defensive plays of Sandy Weed, Sharon Bean, Lauren Rooney, Wendy Geuss, Kathy Wright and goalie Jen Hunderfund kept the opposing teams from scoring. Foward Larisa Yusko was selected to the All-MHAL Field Hockey team. The Lady Huguenots played many excellent games. Their victory against Coleman, last year's MHAL champions, was especially rewarding. The team played a great game holding the Statesmen scoreless. When the game went into sudden death overtime, Jenni Ackcrt made the winning goal. Several newspapers interviewed the girls after the impressive victory. The team had several unique trademarks. The girls pulled their hair into “whale-spout pony tails on the tops of their heads. They also taped letters on their shorts to spell “Go New Paltz!!! The team always had fun while playing their favorite sport - Field Hockey! Field Hockey Top: Coach Nick Gantner. Jennifer McKnight, Lori Villein. Jennifer Hunderfund. Sheila Feldman. Colleen Dippcl. Varsity Soccer This year’s soccer season was definitely unique. On the varsity team, there were many ups and downs, but all in all, the team did improve from the year before. The primary part of every team is the talent of its players, and New Paltz certainly did have talent. Neil Cotton stood out from the pack as a strong offender and member of this year’s All-MHAL team. Other players who made large contributions to the team were Derek Burnham, Ralph Enchenique, Matt Nathe, and Mountain Miller. These players, with their skill and experience, helped the team improve a great deal. Perhaps the biggest moment for the team was their shut-out over Onteora (2-0). Coach Cothrcn attributes their success to the desire and toughness they displayed at games and practices. The team certainly does hold promise for next year. Unfortunately, the junior varsity team didn’t share the same good fortune as the varsity team. As a matter of fact, the group was the butt of several jokes about their less-than-perfect record. The team was quite unusual, though. They were the only JV team in the league with girls on it, and its members made numerous chants about their opposing teams (most of which can't be reported). One thing is for sure, the team did have fun! Several players stood out from the strange crew. They were John Saul, Karl Mattsen, Kevin Mitchell, Teddy Mehari, and Mark Ruoff. John Saul actually played with the varsity team when their goal tenders were injured. One thing is for sure though, the team's spirit showed that they were good sports. Best of luck to both teams next year. Top L: Dun Roscngarlcn. John Bostwick. Chris Steffens. Jcspcr l.uth. Tim Rodgers. Mike DcStcfano, Rawn Salengcr. Mountain Miller. Coach Kevin Cothrcn. R: Captain Phoebe Avery follows through on her backhand. In the past, golf hasn’t exactly been one of the more successful teams, but through the effort of such players as Glenn Lapolt and Mike Freer, the team had a winning season which allowed them to go all the way to the sectionals. Glenn Lapolt and Mike Freer were also given the honor of making the All-MHAL team which capped off a very successful season for Mr. Ackert and the guys. The girls’ tennis team was full of new faces, while only a few of last year’s team returned. It took a lot of spirit to practice hard at this difficult sport of style and endurance. The girls concentrated and played their best during the season while qualifying five members for the Section 9 Tournament. We are expecting almost all to return next year and make the season even better. 55 Varsity Football The Hugie’s season this year was one which provided hours of fun and excitement for all concerned. Throughout the year, they remained formidable opponents, ending the season with a respectable record and a third place ranking. Several players were key elements to the team's winning season. By far, Phil Driscoll was the shining star of the team with the MHAL’s leading number of touchdowns (16), selection as player of the year, and a place as running back on All-League and All-County teams. Scott Beatty also received several honors, as did Jim Fin-kenaur, who was picked for the MHAL’s All-Academic Team. Other players who made large contributions were Cullen Burda, Eric Barbieri, Dave Dippel, and Rick Spurling. Every player, though, showed enthusiasm and willingness. John Richardson's touchdown pass from the fourteen yard line to Phil Driscoll led New Paltz to a 12-7 victory against Ellenville. The Hugie defense also crushed the Rondout team on the four yard line keeping them from scoring a goal and winning the match. New Paltz certainly must have impressed their foes with their fine skill and experience. According to Coaches Craig and Freer, almost twenty of this year's players will be returning next year. If the team’s high spirits continue, the Hugies will be sure contenders for next year’s championships. Top: Coach William Freer. Kevin Douglas. Eric Barbieri. Joe Tvclia. Scott Beatty. Cullen Burda. The girls had a .500 season and the boys won eight out of ten meets. The teams also performed excellently in the MHAL Championships. Both Coach Art Stegan and the members found this year truly rewarding. The Hugies outstanding season was caused by the hard work and dedication of the athletes. Mike Daddario, Dan Brown-stein and Greg Russo took the boys’ team to victory several times. The girls’ team was paced by Shiloh Pileggi, Vickie Ha-bersberger, and Jennie Alba. The teams were motivated, well disciplined and followed the leadership of runners Jeff Smith, Mike Daddario, Katya Kopaskic and Soo Fackler. The New Paltz teams placed one runner, Mike Daddario, on the All-MHAL Cross-Country team. The Hugie runners were an unusual group. They ran in apple orchards or to the tower at Mohonk but never just around the track. The teams were composed of strange haircuts, bizzare athletic gear, and an unusually strong sense of unity. The team, coached by Sean Peterson, consisted of twenty-five dedicated players. Although the inexperienced team got off to a slow start, they finished up the season with a admirable record. The team was led by several outstanding players. Offensivily, Randy Knoth and J.D. Clark, tall backs, and Bobby Knoth and Steve Bonita, in tackle positions, moved the ball down the field toward the goal for the Hugies with their precise exe-cutution. The defense effort was aided by Jim Gardner, defensive end, Chris Brady, tackle, and Cletus Witte, defensive back. The team blocked, tackled and effectively prevented their opponents from scoring. Coach Peterson commended his team on several well played games. The season peaked as they defeated Saugerties in a tightly controlled game. The Hugies made successful four goal line stands against the Saywers to win it, 6-0. Top R: Scan Peterson, Mark Cunningham. Al Schiff. Cheerleading The football chcerleading squads exemplified the Hugie Spirit. Advised by Barbara Rutulante with co-captains Nancy Solaas and Regina DuBois for the Varsity squad and Krista Butler and Nina Gaskin for the Junior Varsity squad, the cheerleaders made the season sparkle. Many members of the squads spent part of last summer at specialized camps for extra training. At the National Chccrlead-ing Association Camp, the girls learned how to build a human pyramid. Some Varsity members also went to Marching Band Workshop at Westchester University in Pennsylvania. There they won a “spirit stick for ability, enthusiasm and outstanding performance. Aside from attending every game, rain or shine, the cheerleaders worked hard to plan school-wide events. They organized a pep rally to psyche the football teams for Homecoming. They sponsored the Homecoming Dance, the first of the year. The cheerleaders also decorated a hung encouraging poster before big games and recognized every Senior athlete on Senior Recognition Day with a flower. The fall cheerleaders, full of pep, zing and energy, showed the school pride in the maroon and white Hugie teams. Top: Krista Butler. Karen Bonita. Rachel Moricllo, Nina Gaskin. Gucn Bostwick. A volleyball match is composed of three fifteen point games, with the winner taking two out of three. The Varsity team, coached by Jane McKenna, was lead by co-captains Thuy Bon-agura and Anna Sorin. Thuy Bonagura and Kim Keonig were the super serves of the bunch. The team had one small mishap, when their bus blew a tire on route to Saugerties, and they had to wait for a replacement bus to come from New Paltz before continuing on. Next year, the team should have an extremely fine year, as only one player is graduating. The junior varsity team faces the same situation, because they were almost exclusively made up of freshmen this year. With no prior training in volleyball, the team did very well. The team had a rotating captainship: each game it went to someone else. Karen Primm and Carla Powers were excellent servers, while Kim Garman blocked effectively. The team was coached by Pearl Lee. Half the size of other teams in the league, the squad won their first scrimmage and beat Walkill during the regular season after having to forfeit to Rondout. The dwindling size of the team forced everyone to be versitilc. By the end of the season, the team was down to eight members. Four of the girls regularly participated in all four events in meets. Two of them were coached by Linda Worden, the bars and the vault, while the other two, beam and floor, were coached by Pearl Lee. The coaches were successful; the girls scores increased with each meet. The girls also helped the junior varsity team composed of seventh and eighth graders. Five girls advanced to the Section 9 tournament; Peggy Dammeir, Kim Cunningham, Jenny Rebhan, Kim VanVliet and Amy Heaton. All of these elements could be found in the gym during the 1986 boys' basketball season. The Hugies hit the court this year with a desire to win, and with their flashy new uniforms they did just that. Rich Sie-gal, coaching for his second year, demanded a lot from his players, but none complained because the spirit of winning was in the air. The team had an advantage with its many returning stars. The “big men,” Cullen Burda, Eric Barbieri, and Paul Mele did their jobs well and added up the points. Phil Drischoll and Neil Cotton, playing tough, finished the season as the Hugies defensive players of the year. The team managed to beat Wallkill in a close match. Rhett Weircs brought the Hugies victory by making the winning point at the free-throw line. In their last game the team defeated Saugerties with 9 seconds on the clock. A long pass from Neil Cotton to Phil Driscoll, who drove in and scored, ended the season with a blaze of glory! Great year guys. Top: Coach Sicgal gives the team instructions during a time out. Girls’ JV Basketball The 1986 Girls’ Basketball teams strived hard and had an enjoyable season. The Varsity crew was coached by Jeff Ackert; the Junior Varsity by Sue Coffey. Both coaches were pleased with the effort and teamwork displayed by their groups. The Varsity team, having lost three starting players from last year, was fairly inexperienced. The girls got off to slow start because of a injury to Coach Ackert, but after making up for lost time they won some games. This year's Lady Hugies were a defensive ball club. The hustle of seniors Kathy Wright and Sheila Feldman frustrated opponents as they forced turn overs time and time again. The best defense is a strong offense as they say; high scorers Thuy Bonagura and Kim Koenig were very important to the game plan. The girls played some strong games and in the end had victories over Saugerties and NYMA. The Junior Varsity girls nicknamed “the bad news bears” were always fun to watch. Along with the teams silly antics, they had some intense games. Guards Amanda Als-dorf and Becky Heyl controlled the pace of each game; Jill Stratton, forward, drove to the hoop, drew fouls and helped the team to victory. Coach Coffey found the girls a pleasure to work with, and all had a fun year! Top: Amy Dolan, Lisa Barbicri, Rosannc Mcmc. Karen Primm. Alyson Sloan, Naja Krause, Lynne Pritchard. JV Basketball The 1986 Junior Varsity boys’ basketball team, had short hair but, was long on talent. Their ability was not only in scoring points, but also, in team work. Coach Sean Peterson felt that all of his eleven players took a sincere interest in helping each other and improving the team. Next year’s Varsity team will be lucky to obtain many of this season’s stars. Team captain, Derek Houston, led the Hugie’s offensive attack along with players Mike Bonaguara and Zach Harrison. With quick hands and feet, outstanding defenders, Tim Rogers and Kevin Harp, often stole the ball and drove down the court. Philip Gertler was awesome from the free-throw line this year swishing the Hugies to victory. The team worked hard together this year, but they found their work payed off. Top R: Zach Harrison. Wrestling is a greuling sport of dedication and desire. The 1986 Hugic grapplers put their best effort foward. Coaches Kemble Matter and Frank Ciliberto explained that the team is very young and inexperienced. They felt the best part of this year's season was watching those athletes who were strongly committed to the sport achieve success. Each of the thirty-one wrestlers improved his skills throughout the course of season making the year rewarding. The Hugies were led by team captain Tom Dodd. David Sherman and John Richardson, both having great seasons, proved to be team assets. Five members of the team went to the Section 9 Tournament at Pine Bush, and sophomore Dave Sherman placed first in the 98 pounds weight class at the MHAL Championships. Our 1986 nordic ski teams, coached by Kees de Groot and Sue Hack-ett, certainly displayed these qualities, the coaches divided their time to work within the large group, but their efforts payed off as both teams placed excellently in the Section 9 tournament. The boys' team was “unstoppable this year. With fourteen dedicated members, they skied their way to the top taking the championship at the Section 9 meet. The guys knew another championship was possible, so they aimed for this goal, the team started their season very motivated and ended up winners! Coach de Groot noted that the team had strong competition among the top skiers. Seniors Jeff Smith, Eugene Ruoff, and David James paced the Hugies to the finish line. Underclassmen Jason Stern, Mark Ruoff, and Rom Arcer also captured points to defend the title. The Maroon and White skiers experienced some enjoyable moments this year. Jeff Smith obtained the fastest time of the season, and Jeremy Hcyl discovered that after finally finishing TWO laps he was never timed! The girls’ team also had a great season. They recicved the runner-up trophy in the Section 9 Championship. Moria Krivda, placing second at this meet, obtained the fastest time all year. Skiers Sandy Weed, Heather Croce, and Amice Dhus helped make the difference at the finals. Advisor Marge Ecton is leading the group through the intricacies of proving points and constructing a strong defense. The group goes to Model Congresses. Last year, at Arlington, both Lisa Scalzi and Sara Zackheim earned gavels for being the best speaker in committee. Sitting in the back row of the Model Senate, Rawn Salenger, with a cast on each foot, was not always the most graceful figure going up to the podium. Even so, his bill to leagalize prostitution passed. At the two Model Congesses this year, one in Ocean-side, NY, and the other in Arlington, the team hopes to top that record. Preparation for these events requires large amounts of research. The members spend lots of time in the library. As if to compensate for the hours spent at quiet study, the group sometimes does some crazy things. Once they even came to school on a teacher conference day and for their lunch break, they ate pizza, without plates or silverware, in the Library. Just don’t tell Mrs. Knapp! You won’t see Coach Mike Zimmerman pacing the sidelines or shouting encouragement to his team during a match. He can’t. The television studio where Schola-tic Match-Up is filmed must be asbsolute-ly quiet during the actual taping. It’s not that he has anything to shout about, though. New Paltz wracked up impressive scores with no trouble. Out of ten teams. New Paltz took first place in the South Division. The starting team members, Eric Kaye, Sara Zackheim, Gabe Coleman and Jeremy Heyl are well balanced, each knowing the answers to a different type of question. Team alternates. Matt Downs, Mike Ecker and Rich Nardone would score the matches. Once when only one alternate could attend. Advisor Zimmerman had to pinch-score. Practices were hours to remember. No one on the team will ever forget Ben Johnson, a blind English poet. Team members garnered nicknames depending on the type of questions they answered frequently or by their personality. The Quiz Bowl team is doing so well this season that they are contemplating getting team socks or scarves. Don’t forget to catch the team on WTZA. Top: Advisor Marge Ecton, Larissa Knapp. Cynthia Ho. It tries to educate students, teachers and parents about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol. To reach that objective, it sponsors an Alcohol Awareness Day in the Spring and other programs throughout the year. For the Spring-time campaign, Jennifer Lovelace designed an emblem that was left at every place setting at the Prom and Ball. It was also distributed by the florist with boutennieres, corsages and wristlets. Additionally, a traveling group performed the playlet None for the Road. In the fall, with Co-Presidents Sheila Feldman and Serena Krouse, David Brown designed a survey that was filled out by every student at the High School. The members had ‘fun' tallying the results of 600+ surveys by hand. (By the way, are there still some surveys left in the drawer of the bandroom desk?) SADD is also trying to take advantage of the Police Department’s offer to co-sponsor a dance. Advisor Robert Smith is pleased with the progress of the group. Student Government seems to be reborn this year. With a new advisor, Barbara Clinton, the group is larger and more active then ever. Besides having the tra-dional goals of sponsoring a Field Day, a school Christmas tree and a civilized lunch, this year several committees have been formed to deal with other matters. These sub-committees includes ones on Rules, chaired by Robert Wyman and Glenn LaPolt; Communications, headed by Lisa Kopman and Jamie Haskel, Tax-Exempt Status, under Jeremy Heyl; and the Calendar Committee with Wanda Fast and Jenny Ackert. These committees are working on such projects as a no-pass rule for seniors, a student court, no taxes for student organizations, changing the new policy of having unsupervised students remain in the cafeteria after school and having a student representative at School Board meetings. The meetings, held bi-weekly after school and more frequently for the individual committees are well attended. The Home Economics teacher, Marcia Stein, supplies a snack, usually peanuts, raisins and popcorn. The Student Government as a whole under President, Rawn Salenger, Vice-President Stephanie Linder. Secretary Sheila Feldman and Treasurer Jeremy Heyl are doing a fine job. 77 N.P. Singers Jazz Ensemble A voluntary, selective choral group, the New Paltz Singers are small and can travel easily. They learn, in addition to all of the music sung by the Concert Choir, four or five extra pieces per season which they perform almost anywhere. The music ranges from fifteenth century classical french pieces to songs by the Manhattan Transfer. This past season, the Singers had several shows. At the 1986 Spring Concert, they sang “We Go Together from Grease. Everyone, including Director Kent Weaver, surprised the audiance by wearing sunglasses. They also had one noteworthy concert outdoors for the tree-lighting ceremony at Simmons Plaza. They sang “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” four times. It was so cold that the brass instruments that were supposed to accompany them froze and became unplayable. Besides a brass ensemble, the group used various accompaniment styles. Some numbers are done unaccompanied or a cappella. Others are done more traditionally with a piano. For others, the Singers call upon Eric Wilson with his drum set, guitarist Jeff Kirn and bass player Carlo DeRosa. The New Paltz Singers is a general allpurpose choral group. The Jazz Ensemble at New Paltz High School is composed of students who wish to have fun while learning about a different style of music. Many of the improviza-tional solos, unusual arrangements and peculiar rhythms that the group uses simply cannot be done in a concert band setting. Bill Hills, David Brown, Eric Wilson, Jeff Kirn, Carlo DeRosa and Scott Rutulante all played solos in various songs. The group has fun practicing. They go over such tunes as Satin Doll, Ain’t She Sweet and a wonderful version of When the Saints Go Marching In, where the entire group sings two of the song's verses. The other half of their repetoire is fleshed out with music written for jazz bands by Jay Chattaway and Neil Hefti. Being a jazz ensemble, the group has no standard uniforms. Instead, everyone wears brightly colored suspenders over white shirts. During some numbers, the group wears styrofoam ‘straw’ hats with red, white and blue hatbands. The group plays several gigs each year, including Spring Concert and Field Day. The director, Otto Grassel, says that thanks to a strong rhythm section, this group is one of the best ever. 78 Top: Director Kent Weaver. Adam Fractenbcrg, Ed Mesic, John Truaffcr, Cynthia Ho. The band plays at all of the home football games as well as the annual game between New Paltz and Highland at Dietz Stadium. In just a few short weeks, . the group had to prepare a halftime show for the field dedication. This isn’t to say that their practices weren’t fun. It wasn’t unusual to see members order out for pizza when they weren’t playing. For their halftime show, the band played a variety of favorites from the fifties and sixties. Some included Barbara Ann, Wipe Out, California Dreaming and Land of a Thousand Dances. During the show, the low brass got to do a little dance while playing. Besides that, there were many more difficult moves that the band had to do. The music the band made filled the football field with excitement and entertainment. Here's to an excellent season. 79 Chess Lighting Chess, a game of strategy, requires many hours of practice. The Chess Club meets every Thursday to give aspiring players a chance to use new moves. Advisor Eric Bruns and President Jamie Waines hope to have the club competing in League play soon. Stage lighting is very important. Without the proper illumination, concerts and plays become nothing but shadowy figures moving about the stage. The Lighting Club is responsible for properly lighting all major functions at the High School. The Club does the lighting for the Spring and Winter Concerts, the Music Department Production, assemblies and for a few outside groups, such as the local dance company. Before each show, most of the lights have to be refocused, refiltered or repaired. The members crawl across the top of the auditorium ceiling and ever so carefully make the necessary adjustments. Spot lights from the back of the room arc also put in place. Despite the goofs and blunders made at dress rehearsals, the shows always seem to come out fine thanks to the hard work of the Club. Besides helping school organizations with their productions, these students are also learning the rudiments of stage lighting. There’s a lot more to lighting than meets the eye! Top: Dan Roscngartcn. Students have a chance to work on individual portfolios, attend art exhibits, and prepare displays. This year, with the support of Advisor Fran Sutherland, the club has gone to Storm King Art Center and plans to go on other trips in the future. At school, the Art Club is the group responsible for filling the exhibit cases next to the Nurse’s Office and the Library with either sculptures or drawings. For both the Spring and Winter Concerts, the Art Club displays student work samples on folding partitions. The Club also generally raises awareness of the talent of local artists in the region and helps students prepare for further studies. Art, in all of its many forms, shows the beauty of life and the preciousness of time. The Drama Club, directed by Gerard Gretzinger, produced a outstanding performance of The Prisioner of Second A venue. The Neil Simon comedy had a limited cast. Kathy Brown was the female lead; Gabe Coleman was the male lead. Supporting cast members were Simon Baran-off, Erin Quinn, Nicki Peone and Melissa Logan. The play was set in New York City. The sets were constructed by Chris Mano with the help of Josh Molay. Many other people helped out. Denise Edebohls was the stage maneger, Jenn Grey sold tickets and Jennifer Hunderfund, Matt Downs and Kate Gann were ushers. We hope that next year’s production is better attended because the enormous amounts of time, effort, and energy expended deserve greater recognition. Honor Society The New Paltz Chapter of the National Honor Society was organized during the 1948-1949 school year. Ten students were inducted on May 19, 1949. The high ideals of the Honor Society have been upheld in our school for the past thirty-eight years. Members can be found actively involved in many organizations. With goals of service, scholarship, character and leadership. Advisor Vivian Benenati and the officers work for the betterment of the Society. This year is the first year the Society is operating under a new set of By-laws. Sara Zackheim, Cynthia Ho and Larissa Knapp revised a hopelessly outdated set from 1962 and submitted them for approval to the entire Society, where they passed by a large margin. The Society is selling maroon kazoos to raise funds. The Honor Society also sponsored a Pajama Dance and had several of its members ride in the American Cancer Society's Bike-a-thon. Last year’s benefit show for the Akwasanse Freedom School was also a large sucess, and the Society hopes to do as well in the future. Committees have been set up to deal with in-school programs. Last year the Induction Chairman was Dennis Peters, who organized the ceremony. This year, Sara Zackheim is the Tutoring Chairman, matching tutors and students. Cynthia Ho is the chair of the Shadow Program, in which students follow professionals during the course of a workday to determine whether or not they like that career. Top: Helen Harvilchuck. With the help of Advisors Denise Huede and Eileen Faulkner, students delve into French culture. They try to place French foreign exchange students in area homes to create better understanding of the two cultures. The Club also holds its infamous Crepe Party every year. Students get a chance to fry their own crepes and choose their own toppings. This year they had a choice of vanilla or chocolate ice cream, strawberries, cream, whipped cream or jelly. Even though the group made a shambles of the Home Economics room, evryone agreed that the results were worthwhile. Each year, the Sunday before Christmas, a group of hardy souls travel to Rockefeller Center in New York City to perform in TubaChristmas. They are part of a nation-wide organization to make people more aware of the beauty of the lower brass instruments. With a group from Walkill, the tubists, baritonists, and pseudo-tubists, go to the City. The rehearsal occurs in a parking gar-gage. After a through run through of twenty carols and Come Sweet Death, in memory of Alec Wilder, the group goes to the ice skating rink with over four hundred others. The proficiency level of the group ranges from beginner to professional, but Conductor Harvey Phillips manages to create a warm sound. The concert is always well-attended with people lined up over ten deep to hear the brass choir. It is also a media event, complete with television personalities. (This year, Robbie Fuller got a close-up on channel 5.) “The real thrill of playing in TubaCh-ristmas,” claims one participant, “is going to New York and getting hot pretzels.” But he quickly adds that he “can't wait to go again next year - it's my only chance to see more than five other people playing my instrument at the same time.” Top: Josh Molay. The staff of the HUGUENOT worked truly as a team under the direction of Craig Kapilow. Advisor, who provided pep talks, new ideas, and refreshments. The dedication of the production team of the yearbook can be demonstrated in their long hours spent on advertising, photography, copy writing, and layout design. Deadlines were tough to meet, but the staff struggled through. It seemed that every deadline was prececdcd by a snow day. The first copy met requirements for receiving the Pica Award given by Jostens Printing and Publishing. Many friendships were made and old ones strengthened. Being on the staff was a valuable experience for all involved. There arc several people who were instrumental in the development of this book. They were Shannon Brown. Colleen Dippcl. Matt Downs. Bridget Finken-aur. Theresa Greco. Jeremy Heyl. Serena Krousc. Michele Tung. Kathy Wright, and Sara Zackhcim. Equally as important was the support displayed by the administration, faculty, and student body. As a result of your support, this book was a success. Yearbook! Top: Jeremy Heyl. Monica Elliot. This list might make 1987 seem so trendy, but wait a minute, let’s not get the wrong idea. Our style deserves more credit than that. Perhaps we don’t belong in Vogue but New Paltz High School does have a unique flair. Some of us are conservative in dress, some a little looser, and then we have the outrageous! Queen Sharon Bean, King Cullen Burda; and the attendants: Nancy Solaas and Gleen LaPolt for the senior class; Niki George and James Gardner for the junior class, Rachel Lasher and David Rechcn for the sophomore class, and Karen Bonita and James Gardner for the freshman class were crowned. After much fun. dancing and merriment, the dance broke up so that everyone could attend the Homecoming Game the next day. (By the way. New Paltz trounced Walkill to make Homecoming Weekend more perfect.) Halloween Dance The Senior Class called all witches, ghosts and goblins to their Halloween Dance. The call worked; over half of the school attended. The success of the dance can be attributed to the hard work of the officers, most noteably Derek Burnham. The judges of the costume contest were the officers of the Senior Class. Pope John Vett placed third. Second place was awarded to Jeff Smith for his portrayal of a schitzophrenic. The result of three months of hard work was Lil'Abner. directed by Mr. Kent Weaver. There were a few glitches. During a rehearsal, lead Robbie Fuller tripped running off stage during the Sadie Hawkins Day Ballet. His resulting injury required four stitches. Michael Ecker who was supposed to play one of the main characters. Earthquake McGoon, fell and injured his knee a week before opening night. Karl Brunjes stepped in on short notice to take his place. Also, during one production, a glass broke on stage. (And that’s not even counting the dress rehearsal where the cast did three scenes out of order.) Nevertheless, the show played to full houses both nights and got a good reception. A small pit band provided the musical accompaniment. It had to learn the entire score in less than a month. It did an admirable job, considering the fact that many instrumentalists also had parts in the play. Some people were especially good, including Matt Downs as Senator Jack S. Phogbound, Gabriel Coleman at Marryin’ Sam, Robbie Fuller as Abner Yokum and Valerie Morrisey as Daisy Mae. The hero of the day, however, was not there in the flesh. Attracting business is always a problem. Groups advertise in school, on bulletin boards around town and on the scene. A tried and true technique is sending the females out, to try to stop cars with their feminine wiles. It didn't always work, though. At least until they recover from their colds, most participants will not forget teh Saturdays they spent in the parking lot of the Highland National Bank. Winter Good things come to those who wait. When the Winter Concert was postponed from a Thursday to a Monday because of a storm, the audiancc did not mind. They came en masse and were treated to a superb program. Even before the formal begining of the show, music rewsounded in the halls. A quartet. Michael Ecker, Matt Downs, Sara Zackhcim and Robbie Fuller, played Tuba Christmas music in the Lobby. And that was only the beginning of the evening! First was the band, with a mixture of holiday songs, pieces for band and classical works that have been transcribed. Jared Spears's Scenario opened the formal concert. They played A Christmas Festival by Leroy Anderson, along with A Euro-perean Christmas and A Chanukah Triptych. One piece, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring featured an antiphynal brass choir in the orchestra pit. The next group to perform was the New Paltz Singers. They also sang a variety of songs. With a solo by Michael Ecker and accompanied by Carlo DeRosa, Eric Wilson and Jeff Kirn, they sang Java Jive. Cynthia Ho accompanied Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire. Two traditional songs dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were also included on the program. The full Concert Choir closed the evening. The first two songs were done with a small brass ensemble of Karl Brunjes, Scott Rutulante, Neil Cotten and Sara Zackheim. From Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, the choir did A Boy Was Born. Valerie Morrissey had a solo recitative, and the Singers performed the trio of a Mendelssohn piece with three movements. On a jubilant note, the show closed with Let It Snow, accompamied by John Truaffer and Good Ale. After the concert, everyone was invited to the cafeteria for a reception. We've all been riding that roller coaster know as adolescence. Four years of mood swings and perhaps we are finally coming together. Not too far on the horizon is our sanity. But first let’s talk about our insanity. Good old freshman year. Always trying to give those seniors our brightest smiles and wearing our flashiest threads (God forbid sweats!). We were so caught up in climbing the social ladder that the ultimate truth slid right past us: we were nerds. Our next move was sophomore year. Not so self-conscious and we began to have social lives. Parties, boyfriends, girlfriends and peer pressure were some new elements in our lives. The Prom was only a year away so we had fund raisers and dances. Who can forget standing on Main Street screaming “Car Wash” at the top of our lungs. Ah, those were the days. The one everyone dreads came next. Junior year— every teen-ager’s nightmare. All those Regents courses. Amongst all the school pressure we still had fun. How about our Prom. Stanley Cole’s will always hold a place in our hearts. If it wasn’t for our terrific advisors and class government we would never have had such a good time. It was great to see everyone decked out and dancing like animals. And who can forget the SAT’s—the dreaded SAT’s— the morning after. Now here we are-the senior year- the coming of age. The beginning of this year was definitely rough with all the tensions of college, but we seem to be loosening the reins. What happened to the flashy threads of our freshman year? What happened to doing homework? What happened to arriving at 7:45? That horrible epidemic known as “senioritis” is spreading like wildfire. Still we all made a name for ourselves in this school. Whether it be through sports, art, academics or whatever. So when life seems to be one big cement block on your shoulder, remember that we are all special ourselves, and that New Paltz High will never forget us. Senior Clnss Officers: Michael Ecker. It is called the Life Skills Development Program and has two classrooms of under 12 students each. These students range in age from 13 to 21 and have a curriculum which includes social and pre-vocational skills. The students are from the entire county, as well as New Paltz. Mr. Spcedling, their special gym teacher, can often be seen working with groups in the gym or on the field. Many of the students also eat in the cafeteria and attend assemblies. Around the Christmas holidays, the Senior Class sells greeting cards that they have printed themselves. The Intermediate Class teacher is Sandra Kissam and the Senior Class teacher is Carolyn Sas.
