Actually, these crazy jeans are one of this year's biggest trends in New Paltz High. The paisley print jean was also seen all over shirts. One simple word can describe them perfectly-BIG! And tons and tons of that wild jewelry, pins, pearls, rhinestones-the works. Stirrup pants and leggings were another big hit. Not only do they look good, but at last they are something comfortable. All of the clubs in the school had booths to show off their acheivements of the past year. It was also a good time to become interested in a new club. One of the more popular booths was sponsored by the SADD chapter. They had a computer program that showed the effects of alcohol on a driver's reflexes. The club distributed literature and bumper stickers. Each class had a table. The freshman class challenged everyone with a ring toss. The sophomores offered one of the best bargains of the day-for a penny anyone could make a wish at their wishing well. The junior class supplied fresh vegetables in the shape of the numbers “eight-six . For those who had a foreign bent, the Spanish and French Clubs were represented. The Spanish Club gave away san-gria. Anyone could find his fortune inside a balloon from the French Club. Anyone who could stump the Quiz Bowl team was offered a prize. Only one person collected. The Art Club drew impromptu sketches of a few lucky people. The Drama Club also had an exhibit. The Jazz Ensemble played their last “gig of the year at Club Day. It was the perfect ending. Musical Revue For two nights the New Paltz community was treated to a Musical Revue by a group of dedicated choir members. Under the direction of the choral director, Mr. Kent Weaver, the cast of forty-five met almost every night for two months. At first that did not seem like enough time to put together a show. There was music to be memorized, costumes to be found, dances to be learned and a publicity drive to be organized. Yet, the show that was presented was a completely polished production. The cast received a standing ovation both nights-a tribute to their dedication and hard work. Several students made significant contributions to the performance. Mary Vasse and Joey Watson helped with the choreography. Mike Salerno and Bradley Johnson controlled the lighting. Cynthia Ho provided the musical accompaniment. Although there were a few moments where the show was touch and go (one person read his lines out of a hat!), the majority of it was excellent. The high caliber performance is a sign that next year's musical will be even bigger and better. L: Sarah Rhoads, Keelin Smith, Jennifer Hunderfund, and Denise Edebohls are the daughters from Fiddler on the Roof. Below: Jennifer Hunderfund, Heidi Tansosch, Gabe Coleman, Stephanie Hochreiter, Sharon Bean, Wendy Geuss, Tammy Natoli, Kathleen McGivern, Tyagi Schwartz, Karen Costa, Eldeva Tofte, and Joey Watson strut their stuff in the grand finale-One! Middle: Juniors cheer their classmates on. Bottom R: The football players think they have this one in the bag. On October 25th at 1:00 P.M. the annual Pep Rally took place. The excitement started with the Senior Relay. They had to weave a tricycle around cones, do the human wheelbarrow and finally do the potato sack race. Then came ... the TUG O' War. First, the sophomores defeated the freshmen. Then, the juniors beat the seniors. The Water Race was next. All Varsity players who had participated in Fall sports took part. They had to fill a glass with one spoonful of water at a time. There was quite a bit of slipping and sliding. That was followed by the pie eating contest. Each class sent a representative to gobble pie. The day ended with the screaming contest. The class of 1986 shouted their way into the winners circle. What a way to end a day! The Senior Class and the Cheerleaders combined the two and created a night of both New Paltz spirits and Halloween spirits! There was quite a display of costumes including babies, togas, witches as well as some unexplained things. Later in the evening the class attendants and Homecoming King and Queen were announced. Surprisingly enough, our Homecoming Queen was a mouse! 31 Homecoming Game 1985 Below: BJ Torres gelling into the swing of things. Bottom: Hugies the team that's always on top. Bottom L: Kathy Decker's Cookie Counter. Enchantment Under The Sea ome people wished that they had brought their scuba gear to the underwater event of the year. Fish bedecked the walls, streamers hung from the ceiling and the lights were muted to an aqua-blue effect. The music was provided by the Radio Club. As an added attraction, they supplied a strobe light. Everyone cleared the floor for the breakdancers. Even though the occasion was sponsored by the juniors, it was mostly attended by freshmen and sophomores. Everyone had fun at the first dance of the year called-you guessed it-Enchantment Under the Sea. Above: Samantha Gruber and Jennifer Glasgow-Girls just want to have fun! Bottom R: The judges- On a scale of 1 to 10..... 35 Oliver Dhe New Paltz High School Drama Club performed a highly anticipated two-act play of Charles Dickens' Oliver on February eighth and ninth. The play was skillfully directed by Gerard Gretzinger, in his first year at the helm of the Drama Club. Erika Bloch served as student director. Because it was necessary to use children in the production, thirteen students from the Middle School Drama Club, headed by Mrs. Sally Rhoads, were cast as work-house boys. Also from the Middle School were Julia Wilson, who played Bet, and Marco Paz, who was cast as Oliver. There was more to the show than met the eye. In one scene, someone crawled under a table to hide. Rehersals were not uneventful either. Lines and actions had to be put together with the help of ac-compianists John Trauffer and Jeffery Halstead. All in all, the cast put on a fine performance, leaving the audience delighted. L: Katie Seaholm and Gail Harkavy are chatting Londoners. Above: Marco Paz, as Oliver, sits with Claudia Sperber. Top Center: Matt Downs, Jerry Gretzinger, Valerie Morrissey, Tammy Mesic, Mindy Williams and Becky Morrill watch Denise Edebohls revel in Oom-PahPah . WINTER AND SP Dhe halls are alive with the sounds of music. Concerts at NPHS are always a treat. Whether your musical tastes run from modern to classical, there is something for everyone. Before the spring concert, a Woodwind Choir performed in the lobby. The formal concert started with the Jazz Ensemble. They opened the show with three selections, including Glenn Miller's theme song, In the Mood. Next, the New Paltz Singers sang a classical piece, Adoramus Te, as well as Mister Sandman. The choir showed its versatility. They sang two modern pieces by Cecil Effinger, Woocfand Basket. More traditionally, the choir sang songs by Brahms and Vivaldi. The Band lived up to all expectations. A march, medley and a Prelude and Fugue entertained the audience. At the Winter Concert, the Woodwind Choir provided a foreshadowing of things to come. The Band opened the concert with Jubilant Overture by Alfred Reed. Sleigh Ride, by Mozart, was also performed (with antique Swiss handbells!). Top L: Bridget Finkenaur waiting to be cued. RING CONCERTS Top L: Mike Childs and Norma Nelson-the invinceable duo. Middle L: Robert Lucchesi and Derek Houston try to stay warm. Above: Rebekah Slotnick, Gwen Bostick and Chris Rand play their horns. Top R: Director Kent Weaver cues the altos. Middle R: Presenting ... the 1985 Spring Concert Choir! An antiphonal brass choir, that had squeezed in practices before school, played Sonata pian'e forte, the first piece written with dynamics. The New Paltz Singers did four songs. Carlo De Rosa and Eric Wilson accompanied On Broadway. Two songs, A La Nan-ita Nana and Carol of the Bells were done acapella. For the choir, a sextet of students accompanied a selection from a Bach oratorio. In addition, Cynthia Ho and John Trauffer each played the piano part along with the choir. Even Shakespeare got into the act. He was the lyricist for one song, Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind. The concert concluded sucessfully with a reception in the cafeteria - ample reward for a job well done. (Togas ire op- tional.) Many people followed tha Ji ctive. The Dance, sponsored by the Senior Class, was a great success. The Togas were very interesting. Several people with imagination made their togas out of patterened sheets. Others used plain white. The Togas were fastened together with thread, tape and pins. At the evening's end, the winners of the Best Toga Contest were, drum roll, please, Jeff Smith as Caesar and Rachel Moriello as Calpurnia. Hat Day Bartholomew Cubbins had five hundred hats, but you only needed one to participate in Hat Day at New Paltz High. The SCA sponsored the day, which coincided with National Hat Day-Friday, January 31, 1986. Hats in all sizes, shapes and colors were worn. The office seemed to favor cowboy hats. Winter hats and baseball caps were also popular. But, for those daring few who risked their dignity, there were rewards. At the end of the day, the winners of the best hat awards were first place, Jeff Smith, second place, Richard Upright and third place, Glenn LaPolt. 42 Top: Ellen Dietz and Kim Krajicek Middle: ]oe Watson and Duane Salenger Above L: Chris Steffens, Above R: Mrs. Abrams and Dr. Salenger L: jeff Smith Hafs off to you! It started with the famous kickball games at Duzine School and Campus School. We then graduated to dodge ball while at the Middle School. Finally, we hit the High School with full force! This year's Senior Class was extremely innovative. We were always coming up with new ideas. We were the first class to sell balloons for Valentine's Day, cotton candy for Field Day and pictures with Santa Claus at Christmas time. Our St. Patrick's Day dance was the most awesome dance to hit the school. Our Junior Prom, in May of '85, was said to be one of the most well organized, beautifully decorated and overall the best Prom in recent years. Those who make up our Senior Class are all uniquely special. We don't hassle the underclassmen; we've been known, on occasion, to step down from our pedestal of superiority to converse with them. This class turned out artists, many great athletes, talented musicians and actors, and people with intelligence to make great things happen in the future. Everyone contributed something, either in a sport, music, or eager help with fundraisers. We would like to give special thanks to Ms. Evans, Mr. DiBlanca, Mr. Noelle, Dr. Salenger and the entire office staff for their continued faith in us and their support of our ideas. Thanks to all of the other faculty members who chaperoned our dances and to all of you who helped us grow in so many ways. The Class of 1986 is definitely in a class by itseJf! Honor Society Service, leadership, character and scholastics are the prerequisites for admission into the Honor Society. It is £n organization with multiple goals. The annaul induction ceremony was held on May 23, 1985. Thirty-one people became members at that time. Drs. Wilson and Salenger delivered remarks. The band provided the music for the processional and the recessional. After the program, the Society sponsored a reception in the cafeteria, where members extended thanks to Mrs. Knapp, the advisor. The Honor Society consists of some of the finest students in the school. In its own way it provides something for everyone. One of its main projects is tutoring students in their difficult subjects. New Paltz Singers And Jazz Ensemble nt has been a banner year for the Jazz Ensemble. It is using an electric piano, has all five sax parts covered and is prepared to entertain all with the latest tunes. The Singers is an audition only choral group that performs jazz, madrigals and light classical music. Director Kent Weaver often tells the group to loosen up and have fun while singing. Individually, they each work on portfolios in an artistic atmosphere. The best works are placed in showcases throughout the school for all to enjoy. One of the more ambitious projects of the Art Club was to bedeck the entire building with paper snowflakes. Once completed, the flakes added a touch of winter and holiday spirit to NPHS. Club president Theresa Santiago has done an excellent job of keeping the display cases up-to-date. Jennifer Glasgow informed the members of trips to art shows. Advisor Frances Sutherland provides support, advice and encouragement for the budding artists. After all, one picture is worth a thousand words. S.G.A AND S.A.D.D nwo of the more worth while clubs in the school are known by their initials, SGA or Student Government Association and SADD or Students Against Drunk Driving. The SGA is more active than ever. It has sponsored a Dress-Up Day and a Red and Green Day. SGA members decorated the bulletin board outside of the cafeteria with news of upcoming events and birthdays. Joe Ingoglia and Dave Westervelt, SGA members, purchased a Christmas tree through their club's funds. On the way home, the evergreen fell out of the car and had gotten run over before they could rescue it. Then, Bill Hills and Dave Brown brought in the stump and said that it was the whole tree! The real tree, relatively undamaged, graced the lobby during the winter concert. The advisor, Mrs. Kathy Brennan and the officers. President Kristin Frisina, Vice - President Eric Kaye, Treasurer Rawn Salenger and Secretary Julie Pirner have worked very hard to brighten our school days. The elimination of drunk drivers is one of SADD's main goals. To accomplish that it had anti-drunk driving messages read at athletic events. It also sponsors an assembly to warn NPHS students about the dangers of driving while intoxicated. Another goal is education. The games, called Scholastic Match-up, are televised on the local television station. This year, the team is also participating on Answers Please. Proudly, they represent New Paltz against other schools. The Quiz Bowl team does its job well. In the 1986 season they were second place in the league. This year, they hope to continue their winning tradition under Advisor Michael Zimmerman. nhe Olympics of the Mind team applies their knowledge of physics, math and their originality to a problem each year. In the past, they have designed vechicles to perform specific tasks. This year they are building a balsa wood bridge. It can only weigh twenty-five grams, but must support four hundred pounds. The team has been to the state championships three times in three years. With the help of Advisor Barbara Campbell, they are trying to make it four times. Yearbook eing on the yearbook staff is unlike being in any other club or team. When the school year is over, the staff has more than memories, they have a record of the year to share with the school. Making the record isn't easy. Hours are spent planning and carrying out the work. Each page has to be individually designed. Every picture must be specifically chosen to convey a particular message. All names are carefully checked for correct spelling. Ads, pictures and words are somehow brought together to form a book. It encompasses a wide range of events. From the hundred meter dash to the 3200 meter run to the shot put there is an event to interest everyone. Even with good teams, winning is not guaranteed. The boys' team had several close meets, beating Walkill by one point and Saugerties by two. At the meet against Red Hook the outcome of the meet was to be decided in the final race. Both the boys' team and the girls' team lined the track in a slight drizzle to cheer their teammates. At the close of the race as if to reward their efforts, a rainbow appeared. It wasn't all magic though. At the first scrimmage of the season, Larissa Knapp tripped over a hurdle during a hundred meter hurdle race. Fortunately, she suffered only a minor concussion. Luckily, that was the only major injury. Using the new track, grandstand, and field event facilities, both teams went on to win four dual meets. They also placed third at the Hudson Invitationals. Ten people were named to the 1985 MHAL Track and Field team. They include; Ed Clavie, Darryl Clover, Joe Ingog-lia, Michael Daddario, Scott Beatty, Ed Guidi, Anthony Guidi, Louis Yess, Nancy Milham and Amy Heaton. Other outstanding members were Jeff Smith, Dean Davis, Jamie Waines, Marshall Seddon, Matt Driscoll, Kim Yess, Aimee Dhus, Mary Vasse, and Larissa Knapp. And, who can forget Eugene, Eugene the throwing machine Ruoff? These are not the only people who deserve recognition. The entire team worked hard. Boys' coach Richard James remarked, (This is) one of the finest groups of athletes that I have ever worked with. Girls' coach Art Stegen agreed. Both coaches commented that florescent shoelaces made track very interesting. As one team member summed up the season. It was a lot of hard work but it was worth it. We wanted to do our personal best for ourselves and our team. When asked if she was going to join track next year, she replied, Definitely! Dhe 1985 Varsity Baseball team might have been one of the youngest ever. Although the team had five starting sophomores, they did not lack talent. They played twenty-one games. That amounted to one every other day. The games tend to blur together, except in rare instances. When the team played Highland, the Hugies were losing 12-9 at the top of the seventh inning. New Paltz batted first and scored an incredible seven runs. As Highland took their turn at bat, night fell. The umpire called the game on account of darkness. New Paltz's wonder inning was disallowed. Though Coach William Freer asked for a postponement, the umpire was adamant. The game was over and New Paltz was left with a loss, memories and an inning that never was. Another moment that is rare in the world of baseball occurred in the game against Fallsburg. There were two outs and loaded bases. New Paltz was down by four runs in the last inning. Jake Costello stepped up to bat and hit a grand-slam homerun. New Paltz tied the score, forcing the game into extra innings. Although the Hugies eventually lost, it was an exciting game. The year might not have been as successful as Coach Freer had hoped, but the team showed great spirit and perseverance. Hopefully, next year's team will have all that and more. 93 J.V. Softball Dhe junior varsity softball team was coached by Sue Coffey. Jennifer Ackert kept track of the statistics and fans cheered the Hugies' efforts. Practice was eventful. Tracey Savago suffered a broken nose early in the season and had to wear a special helmet for protection. In the first game the girls showed that they were something special. Alyssa Schiavo hit two home runs during that game. Many times over the course of the season, the pitchers were able to provide three strike-outs per inning. Between Lori Childress stealing bases and Erin Quinn and her run-downs, the team did very well. The team had fun, learned more about the game and made new friends. To add to their an-onimity, they practiced at Pioneer Trail Field. While inconveniently located, it allowed the team to get in more batting and fielding practice. The drillwork paid off. They won the last nine games in a row, ending the season with a very respectable 19 6 win loss record. Against Marlboro, Jeff Nathe produced a suicide squeeze. The ball was bunted between first and second base, giving the runner time to score the winning run. This team was coached by Pat Masson. Varsity Tennis he New Paltz Tennis Team, coached by Pat Erne, has a great deal of which to be proud. The boys brought home the MHAL League championship, while the girls came in second. The boys were undefeated, winning all eleven of their matches. However, they did have a few close calls. The outcome of an exciting match against New York Military Academy was not determined until the final set. Both Bryan Simpson and Robert Strell had to come from behind to win their games. David Bishko, Bryan Simpson, Robert Strell and John Thompsen were all named to the MHAL All-League team. Ann Loric-chio, Margy Fasolino and Naomi Jacobs were three of the best single players in the league. In fact Margy won two tiebreakers (7-4, 10-8) in the MHAL Tournament before advancing to the finals. With a record of 10-2, improved over last year, the Hugies girls were a fighting force. They sent six girls to the Section Nine play-offs. Erne, who has coached girls' tennis since its inception four years ago and boys' tennis for eight years commented, I enjoy tennis and hope my players will always continue to play all their lives. Varsity Cheerleading Dhe cheerleaders were very active this year, both on the field and in school. At games, they led football cheers and fired up the crowd. Off the field, they organized Pep Rallies and dinners. There were two Pep Rallies this year. One was before the first game of the season. The other was before homecoming. In addition, they recognized the senior athletes by giving each one a flower. They sponsored a school spirit week during which everyone wore maroon and white. Varsity Soccer occer, one of the most popular games abroad, does not lack devotees at NPHS. With co-ed teams and plenty of spirit, the Hugies had a good time. The Varsity team, co-captained by Matt Nathe and Derek Burnham, proved to be tough competitors. Five of the thirteen games went into overtime. The high point of the season was tying last year's state champions. Highland. Joe Ingoglia and Mikko Hanski, a Finnish exchange student, provided the team with depth. Both made significant contributions. Neil Cotton was named to the second MHAL All-League team. At the junior varsity level, Coach Frank Alfonso said that the tenth graders were quite advanced. Even the freshman had experience, he remarked. Both coaches are looking forward to next year. Field Hockey nt was a year of firsts for the field hockey teams. Nick Gantner (jayvee) and Orlando Rodriguez (varsity) were both first year field hockey coaches at NPHS. The varsity team also won their first game in three years. The JV team was plauged by problems all season. Only thirteen people went out for the team, and seven of those had never played field hockey before. But, the girls proved that they were something special. They practiced on weekends and holidays-when practices were not normally scheduled. They even took their hockey sticks home to practice with. Because field hockey teams are eleven people and the team only had thirteen members there were few substitutes. In six games, less than a full team was on the field. Once, it was Onteora's eleven players vs. the Hugie's nine. Coach Gantner felt that most of the losses were caused by the lack of players. Even so, the team earned many compliments from the league officials and opposing teams. The coaches felt that each girl gave 110%. Said Gantner, I'm looking forward to next year. Top L: Amy Blythe, Sharon Bean and Coach Gantner- Oh my gosh, what are they doing now? Bottom L: Bryna Donnelly- Here we go, one more time. Varsity And J.V. Volleyball Volleyball is not one of the more popular spectator sports. Even so. New Paltz fielded two teams, a j.v team coached by Pearl Lee and a Varsity team coached by Jane McKenna. The Varsity team had only seven members, but the Hugies were never at a game where all of them had complete uniforms. The size of the team was a help-with seven players the girls got to know each other very well. By the end of the season, they were a very cohesive unit. Ellenville proved to be a tough competitor for the j.v team to conquer. They had to play for the winning point six times before clinching the first win of the season. Two of the Hugies biggest assets were Carla Power, an excellent setter and Raf-faela Tantillo, a good server. Whether serving, setting or spiking, the New Paltz Hugies showed their spirit and determination. L: Kim Krajicek, Raffaela Tantillo, Karen Primm, Kim Garman, Keelin Smith, Bridget Finkanaur and Carla Power. Below: Laura Boehm, Kim Koenig, Coach Jane McKenna, Anna Sorin, Thuy Bonagura, Debbie Kent, Lisa Scalzi and Kim Fredericks. Dt was an unusual season and the New Paltz football team lived up to it's motto: Pride and Perfection. Although the beginning of the season was stop and go, the Hugies won four of their last five games. The Hugies would either make it or break it on the third play of the game. On the third play of the game against Ron-dout, the Hugies scored a touchdown, making the score 6-0. On the third play of the year, Mike Sobon broke his leg. The Hugies played the last game of the year in the snow. Although the snow obscured the yard lines, the Hugies won it, 10-0. The game against Highland, postponed because of Hurricane Gloria, was one that the Hugies couldn't pull out of the hat. Highland squeaked by, 7-6. Without a doubt, Jim Dodd was one of the finest players on the team. He was the MHAL player of the year, MHAL All-League quarterback, as well as the quarterback pick of the Kingston Freeman and the Poughkeepsie Journal. Scott Beatty, Ken Brooker, Brett Hick and Peter Rubin were also named to the All-League teams. Matt Driscoll, Eric Barbieri, Cullen Burda, Phil Driscoll, and Chuck Hines played extremely well. Football Dhe junior varsity football team surprised everyone. With preseason predictions for the Huges lingering around four wins, six losses, the team outperformed most expectations acquiring a 7-3 record. Coaches Shaun Peterson and Joseph Rhodes credit the excellence of the team to the spirit and friendship. Peterson said, Most teams are friendly, but this group seemed to really enjoy each others' company. They formed a very cohesive unit. Against non-league Cornwall, the Hu-gies were almost able to score twice. They made it down to the five yard line and the one yard line, but were unable to score. It was one of their few losses. The best game was saved for last. The New Paltz Hugies were playing the On-teora Indians in the last game of the season. All the hard work came together, the running, passing and kicking plays were executed perfectly. The Hugies downed the undefeated Indians 12-0. Keith Rohrlick, an offensive guard as well as a defensive tackle was a strong asset to the team. The underrated Hugies who started the season were definitely part of the Maroon Machine. The twenty-four people who participated in cross-country this season have a right to be proud of their efforts. At the MHAL championships, eleven runners received awards. Five Hu-gies were also named All-MHAL runners. The boys' team was very strong. They won all eight of their dual meets plus the Rhinebeck Invitationals (in the rain!) and the League Championships. At the Coleman Invitationals, they came in second. As an added bonus, the team ran in the Manhattan Invitational along with seven thousand other poeple. Coach Art Stegen seemed very pleased with this year's results. 107 Boys Varsity The basketball teams were intense this year. They worked and played hard and improved the win loss ratio over last season. Varsity coach Rich Siegal demanded and received 100% from every team member. After games, he was often hoarse from cheering. The varsity team tromped Onteora 50-35, thanks to its great defense. They even beat last year's league champions, Coleman, by two points. The jayvee team, coached by Shaun Peterson, beat a strong Rondout team. The basketball also helped the seventh and eighth grade teams, assuring the future of the Hugie basketball program. The winter season is one of the most difficult. Practices were held over three major vacations. In addition two fine ball players, Neil Cotton and Oliver Spencer, were out most of the season with injuries. Derek Burnham and Phil Driscoll were two of the Hugies biggest assests. The Varsity team, coached by. Jeff Ackert and the JV team, headed by Sue Coffey, have made great strides toward perfection. During the JV game against Pine Bush, Kim Koenig made the tieing basket in the last five seconds of play, leading to a Hu-gie overtime victory. With the help of a newly learned 3-2 zone defense, the Hu-gies were able to play an impressive game against a high-calibre Marlboro team. The Varsity team might have been small, but it was tough. In new uniforms, they beat Walkill by two points. Coach Ackert says that he had the best all-around talented team. One of the talents was Kara Peterson, who was on the 1985 MHAL All-League team. The NPHS hoopsters are the same as last year, only more experienced. J.V. Coaches Art Stegen and Kees deGroot led the team to their fourth consecutive Section Nine championship. Undefeated and victorious in three invitationals, the ski team won by large margins. The team even attracted the attention of the local television station, which braodcast one meet. In the beginning of the season, matches were held on snow covered grass. Ironically, later meets were postponed becasse snow storms made roads impassable. In those cases, the book room remained filled with skis and poles for another day. All levels of gymnasts practice at the Middle School. Even though space is extremely tight, the team works together very well. They help each other with their routines. Coached by Pearl Lee, the team was very competitive. They won some meets and lost others by fractions of a point. Team captain, Tracey Kane hopes to lead the team to third place in Section Nine. arsity softball, coached by Jeff Ackert was made up of very strong players. Star pitcher Thuy Bonagura, a sophomore, made significant contributions to the team. The team missed playing in the Section Nine playoffs by just a few points. Next year, with many returning players, the team should be even stronger. The wrestling team is a good place to carry out that motto. Each practice starts with forty-five minutes of excercises including leg raises, push-ups, sit-ups and weight lifting. The excercises serve two purposes. They increase muscle tone and burn off calories. Because wrestlers compete in weight classes, losing weight is important. The Hugies have traveled as far as Pennsylvania, New Jersey and upstate New York to compete. At the Pasck Hills Tournament, two Hugies placed first. The Hugies are also playing host to a invitational of their own. Coach Frank Ciliberto said, This year's group has a lot of young and highly motivated wrestlers. Good luck guys! Top: Tom Reynolds tangles one up in a Hugie web. 114 Above: Toni Trippi, John Richardson, Richard Byers, Keith Rohrlick, Jaime Waines, Joe Petit, Tom Bart, Dennis Peters, David Sherman, George Strittmatter, Gregg De-Mers, Tom Dodd and Jason Burkhardt. Dhere are many different sports to join at NPHS. One of the smallest Varsity teams is golf. Jeff Ackert has been the coach of the golf team for the past five years. This year ten students wore new golf shirts with pride. Two of them were Glenn LaPolt, one of the most consistant players, and Michael Freer, who had a very good year. Although the final record was five wins and fourteen losses, Coach Ackert says that it does not reflect the teams efforts. Many times the other team won by only one or two strokes. The Hugies showed their true colors at the Larry Johnson Tournament by placing fourth out of ten teams. The team had a good season to improve their skills at a lifetime sport.
