Buck 3 In the fall of 1974, we anxiously and uncertainly entered our probationary year at New Paltz High School. We awoke each morning to the booming tone and “rocking” escapades of Mr. Campbell. We survived English 2600 and “Tom Brown’s School Days”. We sold “Class of ’78” T-shrits and “Ralphs” in our very successful magazine drive, thus establishing the richest class to pass through these halls in many years. In the spring we raised on Humanities Day and scheduled courses for our . . . ... Sophmore year which we “kicked off’ by taking the J.V. Football U.C.A.L. championship. We ran the great race and sponsored a talent show where “Chiquita Bananas and aspiring musicians abounded. At the close of the year we ordered rings and had a fun picnic at Low Falls. Academically, it was a year for geometry proofs and sheep’s eye dissections in Biology lab.. The next fall, now mighty juniors, we exploded into school with bomb scares. At the Halloween dance we paraded as Devils, sleepy children and African tribesmen. By mid-year we had organized to support Mr.Salenger when his tenure was in question. We backed a basketball team with a combined two year record of 0 and 34. So many teachers were expecting babies that we thought the school would turn into a maternity ward. We held our incredibly successful 1st annual Gong Show where George inflated and the “Plantation 3” performed Finally we had enough money for our Junior Prom. It was held at the Capri 400 and music was by the “Womblers”. We watched the sunrise and returned home just in time to spend the day at Lake Minnewaska, picnicing, swimming, getting sunburned and falling asleep. Our Senior year and 2nd annual Gong Show Finally arrived. Some of us flourished in American History and some selected to take it easy as check-ins and check-outs. We sold cards, elected Kings and Queens, and put together this yearbook. Now, as we approach our long-awaited graduation, we look again, anxiously and uncertainly toward .... tomorrow. Should you be able to achieve such a balanced equation in your own lives, you will indeed be considered unique. I wish you all manner of success in achieving this balanced equation. It would be my hope that the spirit that is seen in the Class of 1978 will not die with your graduation. It must follow in the years ahead, giving you and those you touch a sense of warmth, love, humor, and purpose. Dr. Robert J. McCarthy Dr. Robert J. McCarthy Meeting of the Board of Education Dr. Bartlett Wagner Mr. Terrence Copeland Mrs. Kenneth Green Mr. Paul Donahue Mrs. Richard Ordway Mrs. Bert Reynolds Dr. Bruce Schenker Mrs. William Rhoads Mr. Raymond Morris 9 Dear Graduates: Other cultures place considerable reverence upon the elders in society. Our society has a tendency to revere youth. Young people are characterized as the hope of society while the older people are valued for their wisdom. Fortunately, wisdom is not exclusive to the old. Young people have often pointed the way for societal survival. It is our hope that we have imbued you not only with knowledge but with wisdom to create a better society for all mankind. The years we have shared with you have given us confidence. Sincerely, H. Kenneth Salenger High School Principal Barbara D. Grcenwald Assistant Principal 10 11 Mr. Frank Hamilton, business manager of the New Paltz Central School District, retired October 21st, 1977 after twenty one years of service to education. While rarely in the “limelight”, Mr. Hamilton did much for young people in the New Paltz schools. He has carefully balanced the needs of the many groups in our educational as well as the larger community. He has shown personal concern for every problem brought to his attention. He constantly updated ms fiscal and planning skills always increasing the value of his services to our school system. His direct help to the students in our high school has been in the care with which he managed activities accounts and his great assistance regarding transportation. His universal popularity and the great respect in which he was held was attested to by the overwhelming good wishes given by the great number of people attending his surprise retirement party. Helhoski OUR PLEDGE TO YOU The Guidance Department of New Paltz High School recognizes that each student is an individual with different backgrounds, skills, motivations, and aspirations. It strives to help each individual to know himself better and to provide adequate information so that each may guide himself. We also wish to provide counseling services which are directed toward curricular, extra-curricular and personal problems so that each may enjoy to its fullest their secondary school experiences. It further strives to be active members of the educational team and relate the needs of students relative to educational, social, and career experiences so that education may be total and relevant to the needs of the students whom it serves. Mr. Thomas Benenati Director of Guidance GUIDANCE COUNSELORS Mrs. Majorie Ackert Mr. Joseph E. Helhoski Mr. Marc Kamin Mrs. Marjorie Ackert OPTION II CAREER EXPLORATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICE The Option II service learning experience permits students to earn units of credits through career exploration, community service or work study programs which use community agencies and resources to enhance the educational experience. Students may select a placement for their service-learning experience based upon individual personal needs and career goals. Through actual involvement in the businesses and social service program of the community, students are able to develop pride in themselves and self-confidence while reducing misconceptions about people who may be different in appearance, age or background. They will also have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of career choices, provide the community with a viable source of volunteer services and be able to interact with adults in a positive and constructive way. is The Secretaries: (1 to r) Mrs. Schreiber, Mrs. Farrell, Mrs. Abrams. The club also exhibits its collection at various locations in town and presents Numismatic Awards to a deserving high school graduate. CHESS CLUB The New Paltz Chess Team took home a 4th place trophy in the Ulster-Dutchess County Chess tournament this year, without the assistance of an advisor. Each question answered correctly is worth 10 points, there is no penalty for questions answered incorrectly. Quiz Bowl is ultimately a game of concentration. ( to r) (Bottom row) C. Doucette, M. It might seem like there isn’t much to do back there, but there’s plenty! We cover books with plastic shiny paper, so mustaches won’t be drawn on ladys’ faces. We put cards for new books in alphabetical order and file them in the card catalogue. Pockets have to be glued to the backs of books so you have a place to sign your name. Tape is put on the inside near the binding so “little” fingers don't tear out pages they particularly like! We put books away, and we’re kept busy, and out of trouble too! 37 BAND WOODWINDS (1 to r) (bottom row) M. Rosa, I. Gorton, H. Horn, S. Clough, C. Snow, J. Skill-man. (2nd row) J. Hull, K. Guyan, P. They will long be remembered as the staff with some of the longest issues ever. 45 AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE (I to r) Sonoko Matsuzaki and Stacy Krieg (I to r) S. Krieg, M. Perrone. B. Schaefer, K. We plan to send Vicki Mazur and Alison King overseas for next year and summer. The club’s basic goal is to promote and publicize its existence and purpose, as well as raise money for scholarships to help defray the personal cost of the potential exchange student. 46 YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT (I to r) (bottom row) P. Two political parties are formed, and each has a platform and nominating convention, with an election as the result. The winners of the election get to spend a day with their real counterparts in county, state, and federal governments. Another purpose is to have fun. RADIO CLUB The Radio Club is a group of students who get together on their free periods and provide the school with listening enjoyment during the lunch periods. They broadcast from the radio room which is located in the upper auditorium. OFFICE HELP We the Office Helpers have more to do than most people think. Some of the things we do are: answer the phone and get messages to people, run off the dittos, file and type memos and write out schedules. We also have to spend homeroom explaining to the substitute secretary how the phone works, how to run and type the dittos and come back later to find the office in complete chaos. One thing is for sure, there is never a dull moment. Karslen b°,t0m r°w) M °lis B Avram'S. (top row) A. Williams, J. Puglisi, T. (I to r) (bottom row) C. Edson, T. Mertine (top row) G. Brannan S. At this assembly we presented a skit and had the students commit themselves to buying a yearbook. From there on it was wonderful hard work. Since we have gone to a larger book with more pages we had a challenge on our hands, however, we were ready to meet that challenge with confidence.
