Two centuries ago it was the cause of a revolution which led to the building of a new nation, one formed by and dedicated to the people. This new nation was founded upon the belief that man was endowed with certain unalienable rights, among these liberty, justice, and equality. Each man who fought in the Revolutionary War had his own interpretation of these rights. They all had in common, however, the conviction that only when they were free to rule themselves could they establish a society in which each man could fulfill his own goals. 3 In their quest for freedom, the French Huguenots, chose the Wallkill River Valley as their home, a place to live and prosper without fear of injustice or persecution. 4 5 Ms? :• V' . t ■rT? ■ V I v I ::. Recchia 9 There we were Freshmen, the youngest and shortest people in the whole school -cutest too. We didn’t do a great deal except sell Fanny Farmer candy and see who were smarter, the Campus School kids or the Middle School kids. But we were only Freshmen so what could you expect? Besides we needed time to make new friends 10 We had a car wash and a very successful and most delicious ham dinner, which added to our funds for our class trip to Philadelphia . Not only did we get to touch the Liberty Bell, which gave many of us a thrill, but we also found out how much walking one can do before he falls asleep in a planetarium. There also was a picnic at Hidden Valley, where Mr. James took an unexpected swim. n Next we became the knowing Juniors; knowing how to skip classes and have an all around good time. In our usual creative and original way we had a car wash, bake sale, and ham dinner. The next object was to spend the money. This was done simply by having a Junior Prom at the Granit Hotel. We make that night a weekend by having a picnic at Mohonk the next day. There we ate and entertained ourselves either with a rousing game of football or by trying to fly a kite that liked to rest in trees and swim better. Philadelphia wasn't enough, so as Juniors we made our way to Boston, where a great 12 deal of time was spent on the bus and finding out what teachers can do with toothpaste and peep holes. Now we are Seniors and on the last lap. We have a well established class of jocks, freaks, intellectuals, straights, and greasers where all of us basically get along. Together we aren't the cutest anymore, but there is still the possibility for the best looking. There is no place to go but out, and out we will go. Some of us to college , others to various jobs and others? Well who knows? Anything is possible at this point. 13 M. McCarthy, Sec. F. Boulos, Pres. B. Hurley, V.P. H. Issen, Treas. BRIAN L. STAFF ADMINISTRATION AND BOARD OF EDUCATION ”... Our teachers and advisors have spent many hours encouraging us to think for ourselves . . . ” Dear Graduates: There is, after all, a certain congruence to life. One is born, grows up, lives and eventually populates the earth to insure the cycle. This process has been repeated since the beginning of man. If this simplistic design is accepted, it would seem that life is really not a mass of confusing relationships. It is rather the intricacies of the human mind that cause the confusion. It is also the human mind that thrives on the ability to filter the inconsistencies from the congruencies. We hope your experiences thus far, have provided you with the basic foundations for recognizing the congruencies. We wish you our best in your continuing growth throughout life. Sincerely, H. Young, A. Lin, P. Bon Administrators and teachers aren’t the only ones who have a say in school policy. Through the Student Council, the student body can air their views. Under the leadership of Peter Bort, the Student Council has supponed the re-establishment of the senior lounge. They sponsored The Great Race , a cross-country run which involved the entire school. Also sponsored were some assemblies and a used book fair to raise money for the library. Student Government Assoc. also provided six scholarships. Scholarships of $25 each were given to the boy and girl with the highest average in English and one to the student with the highest average in Math. Three new scholarships were awarded this year. A $25 one went to the student who made the best film, another to the student who spent the most time and effort in the School Community Service Program and a $50 scholarship to the student who was most involved in environmental activities. 26 YOUTH-IN-GOVERNMENT (Back row 1 to r) M. Have you ever wanted to be a Congressperson or wondered how our government functions? Youth-in-Government is a county-wide program that helps students understand how our government is run. This past year a new party was formed, the United Pany, which replaced the old SDA (Students for Democratic Action). After many debates platforms were made and nominations for the various county and state positions took place at Ulster County Community College. This was followed by a vote of all registered student voters in Ulster County. The winners received a day with the person who actually holds that position. This enabled them to get first hand experience of what it is like to hold public office. 127 HONOR SOCIETY (Back row 1 to r) L. Abrams, A. Paradies, D. Neumann, B. Sullivan, M. Lent, B. Scavuzzo, T. The members were chosen on the basis of their scholastic average, as well as leadership, character, and service. The biggest activity of the Honor Society was Humanities Day, which was on Thursday, May 6. On this day classes were suspended and in their place discussions and demonstrations of various topics were offered. Some of the topics offered were belly dancing, death, ESP, parachuting, glass blowing, rock climbing, and jazz dancing. Bowling and swimming trips were also scheduled. The day was a great success. 128 AMERICAN FIELD GERVICE (1 to r) A. Yeaple, L. Afzal, S. Pomazan AFS does a lot to promote world understanding. Our chapter has sent six students to various countries and has hosted five foreign students. The club also held an AFS weekend for the other foreign students in Ulster County. This gave the entire community a chance to see what AFS stands for. Sari Pomazan from Cordoba, Argentina stayed with the Fairweather family this year. Sari enjoyed New Paltz and learned much about the United States. Through her, many people have gotten a broader view of our country. Leila Afzal spent the summer of '75 in Mombasa, Kenya and Anne Yeaple in Bombay, India. Both learned much about the countries they went to, and about themselves too. (Standing 1 to r) N. Farrell There are many adjectives to describe the Earth Committee, but discarding the less impressive ones, hard-working would definitely fit. Many hours are put into manning the Pioneer Trail Recycling Center and lab testing. But it was all worth it for the Earth Committee now runs the largest recycling operation in the area. They are also heading towards their 3000th water sample. With the much appreciated leadership of chairman George Campbell, the Earth Committee has come a long way since its organization in '69. But although they have accomplished much in the fight to protect the environment, there is still much that this active group wishes to achieve. 130 SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE (Back row 1 to r) K. Como Going to school and getting good grades aren't the only important parts of a meaningful education, as proved by this group of students. By getting involved with various agencies found in our community, they have broadened their sensitivity toward others. Students were able to work with people who are retarded, invalid, have learning disabilities, or just needed companionship. Students were also able to work with animals through the various veterinary offices and PAW (People for the Animal World). This program, which is now a half-credit course, allows a student to develop better feelings about themselves as people and dissolve misconceptions concerning others that are different . 131 CHESS CLUB The Bobby Fischer’s of New Paltz High have succeeded in winning two league championships and capturing a first place trophy at a high school tournament in 1975. Their patience and perseverance has had a big effect on their triumphs. (1 to r) T. Rock, L. Straus, K. D'Elia, J. Nyquist LIBRARY CLUB Books, books, books, and more books. Pritchard With Beggars, Brothels, and Ballyhoo, the New Paltz High School's first multi-media presentation involved the drama, music, art, shop, and home economics departments. For the first presentation Benoit Brecht's Threepenny Opera was chosen, a madcap story around the time of Queen Victoria's coronation. Threepenny is the tale of Mack the Knife, the slipperiest criminal in all of London. Mack gets arrested, manages to escape, is rearrested and condemned to death by hanging. In the end he is saved from this terrible fate when he is pardoned by Queen Victoria because more people were attending his execution than were attending her coronation. All of this and much more provided for a very merry musical production. (Back row, ltor)J. Babb, D. Rushforth, L. Nyquist, E. Jacobs, (Middle row) B. Strothenke, S. Cza-plicki, L. Wassell, M. The Regents Scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance on the RSE (Regents Scholarship Examination) and are effective for the 1976-77 academic year. Each Regents College Scholarship entitles the recipient to an amount of $250 a year for up to five years of study in an approved program in New York State. In the event that any scholarship winner declines the award or is unable to accept for any reason, the scholarship is offered to the highest ranking alternate. (Back row, ltor)T. Saragnese, D. Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Program conducts a nationwide search for academically talented students. The search begins in October when the Merit Program administers the PSAT NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). The Merit Program offers several awards and levels of recognition based on participants performance on this test. The Merit Program designates a group of about 38,000 participants as Commended students. These students scored high on the PSAT NMSQT but below the level required for Semi-finalists. Our school had nine seniors named as Commended students this year. These students received Letters of Commendation in recognition of their performance on the 1974 PSAT NMSQT. Approximately 15,000 students are designated by the Merit Program as Semi-finalists in the competition for scholarships. These are the participants who scored the highest on the PSAT NMSQT. Four seniors in our school qualified to be Semi-finalists. These students must meet further requirements and advance to Finalist standing to continue in the competition for awards. 141 HUGUENOT STAFF (Back row, 1 to r) S. Fogden, N. Lent, B. Kelly, M.
