There are problems of population, race, crime, and drugs. There is a business recession — the worst in 30 years. There is the persisting, though declining, problem of the war in Viet Nam. Is this a novel situation? I think not; it varies only in degree. My high school class in 1940, for example, grew up in the depression and graduated into a world at war. It seems that there are always problems to engage our intellect, our energy, our dedication. It is the hope of the Board of Education that the New Paltz schools have equipped each of you to face the challenges you will surely meet. Donald Martin, President MR. DONALD MARTIN. President MR. It is a record of the days spent at New Paltz. hopefully building a strong foundation that will support you well in the years ahead. It is my hope that in later years as you leaf through this book you will look back upon your days here as pleasant ones and profitable. You have seen many changes during your years as a student. You will see many more changes as you go through adult life. My sincere wish is that we have given you a background that will enable you to meet those changes and enjoy a life of happiness and accomplishment. 7 Frederick C. Dippel Supervising Principal er we have come er we sfiqll part. A Message From the Principal It has often been said that the only constant in life is change. A quick glance at the events that occur over any given period of time will bring to light innumerable instances of the apparent truth of the statement. As a specific personal example, the majority of this year's graduating class was born the year that I began my teaching career at New Paltz. During the intervening years. 1 have seen our school system change from one with a population of 374 students and 26 teachers to one with a population of 2.000 students and 130 teachers. Two new school buildings have been built and six additions to existing buildings have taken place. Certainly, this could be considered valid evidence that would corroborate my opening remark. As obvious and as staggering as the inevitability of change may appear to be. it is the constancy of New Paltz students that has overwhelmingly impressed me. Concern, love, compassion, faith, respect, and sympathy are today as they have always been. May each of you continue what you have begun in maintaining these constant values that are beyond change. to Theodore Sirko High School Principal FACULTY 11 MRS. F. SUTHERLAND Art MRS. V. 'William Wardsworfh Valedictorian During her high school years, Arlene Carroll has maintained an excellent academic record. She has actively participated in many phases of school life, including class offices, girl's sports, and the Huguenot Staff. Yet, with all her interests and responsibilities, she maintained a high level of scholarship that earned her a Regents Scholarship and the honor of Salutatorian of her class. Martha Saint-Onge, throughout her high school years, maintained a high level of academic achievement. Besides having an excellent class average, she received a letter of commendation for her performance in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (her name will appear in the book. Who’s Who Among American High School Students). She also received a New York State Regents Scholarship, which will provide tuition for her studies at Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. Martha has been chosen valedictorian for the class of 1972. When he died it was not the end in a sense for his spirit lived on, free and striving in each one of our hearts. This can never be lost for he is a part of us. When we love someone they can never be forgotten and so it is with our memory of Kevin. L. Ruiz Class The fall of 1968 found the class of '12 to be the first Freshman class to enter the new school. Our Freshman year found us willing to work and soon we sponsored a dance “Wild in the Streets” and later on, a Fashion Show Our Sophomore Year proved to be the year of the Super Sophs. The summer had transformed the shy. quiet Freshman of the year before into high-spirited, get-up-and-go Sophomores. Although we had to hit the books a little harder, this did not affect the Spirit of '12. Our Hop, “Aquarius Rules” was a successful result of the hard work involved. In the Spring we had our Picnic and sponsored a trip to Palisades Park which left us with plenty of money and confidence for next year. History As Juniors, under the advisorship of Mr. Brenner, we became ardent capitalists. There seemed to be no end to our ‘how to get rich quick’ ideas. The Ring Dance was a great success as was the Spaghetti Dinner which proved to be our greatest money making venture. The biggest event of any Junior year is the Prom. And the Super ‘72s were not to be outdone! We were the first class to hold the Prom out of school. Ski Minne made a beautiful setting for what proved to be the greatest Prom ever. This year totaled one united class effort. And speaking of class efforts, the combined Junior-Senior Sneak proved a fitting end to a great year. Now, as mighty Seniors we have been suddenly bombarded by the fact that we were scheduled to graduate in June and the beginning of this year was marked by an all-out attack on the guidance office. This being our last year together we tried our best to make the most of it. When we finally graduate, it will be with a feeling of unity and accomplishment from our four years at good old New Paltz High. We’ve Only Just Begun KING: Mike Fairweather, QUEEN: Arlene Carroll.
