Surely there is little that can compare with the importance of progress in the improvement of man's lot upon this earth. Since the dawn of our civilization every generation has been the beneficiary of the progress achieved by the past. It is the duty of each person to contribute his share to the progress of mankind. It is my hope that the experiences you have had in the New Paltz High School will enable you to carry out your responsibilities more effectively. I am proud of each of you and congratulate you. The teachers and the Board of Education join with me in wishing you a life filled with success and happiness. Frederick C. Dippel MR. FREDERICK C. DIPPEL 8.Ed.; M.Ed. His wide and varied interests have gained him a host of friends. For three years he has been a member of the chorus, and won NYSSMA recognition in his senior year. He has served on the editorial staff of the Huguenot, as well as on the many committees of his class. In his junior year Ed was selected for membership in the National Honor Society, and became president in his senior year. On the basis of his National Merit Scholarship score he was invited to participate in the Senior Seminar. Early in his senior year he was accepted by Cornell University where he plans to prepare for a career in veterinary medicine. We are sure that Ed's personality and intelligence, his wit and smile will carry him far along the path of success. Edward J. Du Bois SALUTATORI AN Jane's outstanding performance in the classroom was matched by her contributions to music, sports and school social activities. She has been a member of the school orchestra and chorus. As a junior, she was selected for the National Honor Society. In her senior year, she was a member of the Senior Seminar, an honor accorded only to the most gifted students. To crown her academic achievements, she was chosen for the Bausch Lomb Award for her outstanding achievement in science. Jane's keen intelligence, attractive personality and high purpose will lead her to great success. 15 Jane Redfern Irving Ackerman All human wisdom is summed up in two words, wait and hope. Queen Carol and King Tommy CLASS HISTORY Looking back from the vantage point that four years of New Paltz High School affords us, we recall entering as naive, curious and apprehensive freshmen. We remember feeling important because we were finally on our own, proud of what we already achieved and only dimly aware of what lay ahead. We looked forward impatiently to new privileges and responsibilities. We learned that we had to earn the privileges by learning to work with others and by developing respect for others. Some of the experiences we had, and the most important events in the history of the Class of '64 are here recorded. Our freshman year was a period of acclimation, one in which we accustomed ourselves to high THE ROYAL COURT Prom Queen and King surrounded by Court Attendants — Left to Right: Jean Scott, Sandy Glanz, JoAnn Bennett, Linda Huber, King and Queen, Corliss Robertson, Marge Grigg, Linnea Nystrom, Barbara Zielinski and Joan Hill. Straining muscles, masculine and feminine. school life. We had thought that we were fairly grown up. The inaccuracy of this idea soon became apparent to us in the attitude of the upperclassmen, one of grudging toleration. Though we were treated as adults from the start, it took all of that first year for us to settle into the pattern of high school life. We had our fortunes and misfortunes. Having seven English teachers during our first year was a catastrophe shared equally by the administration, parents and students. Mrs. Moore asserted that we were the worst behaved class in her memory. We hope that we have since vindicated ourselves. Many of us began to take an active interest in extracurricular activities: class and Student Council activities, athletics, cheerleading and club activities. By the end of our freshman year we had successfully struck roots. We entered the sophomore year with the ease born of a Year's experience. We felt strong and were ready for anything: harder studies, more Linda, for her class. 31 i complex social experiences and particularly—love. Our sophomore year was a time for renewal of friendships. Some of us had completed the freshman year at the Campus School and now rejoined their old classmates at the high school. As sophomores we were finally together. The highlight of our sophomore year was the Harvest Moon Dance which featured the Class of '64 All-Boys Chorus Line, a group of brave young men in ballet regalia who performed the Can-Can in the style of Elvis Presley. Our class advisor, Mr. Robert Bennett, planned two exciting and interesting trips to New York City for us. We saw My Fair Lady, and some of us also saw Come Blow Your Horn. An elaborate itinerary through the city included many points of interest and adventures. We became acquainted with some of the more famous restaurants. To pay for these pleasant jaunts and social C' From the victory jug. events, we sold candy which we foisted on reluctant and diet-conscious relatives. Though we did tremendous business, we also spent money tremendously. We ended our sophomore year with a balance of $2.73. It was in the junior year that we finally came into our own. Many of the uncertainties with which we had faced high school had faded away, most of us were set in our academic programs and were beginning to formulate some larger plans for our lives. It was a very exciting and busy year. The Prom, based on the Moon River theme, was our main social event. Carol Bond and Tom Freer were crowned Queen and King. Bruce Grey sparked the event with enthusiasm, hard work and judgment. We won the fall classic event, the tug-of-war, but the fruits of victory were given to the seniors on a technicality that we deemed unfair. Linda Dyer and Allan Rickard were chosen to 32 represent our school at Girls' and Boys' State, Scott Yaeger was selected for the summer course offered by Central Hudson. Many of our members became the spark plugs of our athletic teams. We got our rings, and those planning to go to college took College Boards. We had two term papers to complete, one in chemistry and the other in history. Some of us were preparing for five Regents examinations. Eight of our class were inducted into the National Honor Society, and at the end of the year Bruce Grey, Scott Yaeger and Linnea Nystrom were elected by the student body to the leadership of the Student Council. We are in our climactic year: we are Seniors! The pages of the Huguenot attest to our many and varied accomplishments. And, we hope, this is only the beginning. STANDING: Bruce Grey, President; Mr. Wyman, Advisor; Scott Yaeger, Vice-President. The Student Council, ably led by President Bruce Grey, began the year with the most successful magazine drive of its history. The Council set an extremely high goal, and missed it only by a few dollars. The total profit realized was close to $800. The money helped the Council sponsor many school activities and spectator buses for the out-of-town games. Throughout the year the Student Council has organized many successful dances. Among the social events organized by the Council were Record Hops, dances after basketball games, and the Christmas Dance. The Council issued activity cards and organized a clean-up program for the school. Their purpose was to foster school spirit and raise the level of sportsmanship. 68 HONOR SOCIETY Students are inducted into the Honor Society on the basis of teachers' ratings. The qualities considered are character, scholarship, leadership and service. The Society serves the school by setting a high example of citizenship. Among t h e activities sponsored by the Honor Society were the Scholarship Bowl, a dance honoring the newly inducted members and a Tea for members of the Senior Class interested in college. The officers for the year were Edward DuBois, President; Roger Graham, Vice-President; Jane Red-fern, Secretary; and Corliss Robertson, Treasurer. SEATED: M. I. Bennett; M. Stillman; L. Dyer; A. Although the record of our 1963 Varsity was poor the team showed tremendous hustle and spirit. The highlight of the season was a 7 to 6 upset victory over Highland, a team that was the pre-season favcrite to win the UCAL. Leading the team were seccnd team UCAL center Joe Mars, Jim Lynch, Irv Ackerman, Scott Yaeger, Bob Zaccheo and Bob Phillips. The team's lack of varsity experience was the main weakness. The squad included a large number of underclassmen, and the prospects for 1964 are excellent. RECORD N.P. 0 7 Millbrook N.P. 6 21 Liberty N.P. 7 6 Highland N.P. 7 26 ... TEAM RECORD The Varsity, shaken early in the season by the sudden death of their beloved coach, Mr. Van Valkenburgh, went on to complete the season with a commendable 9 to 4 record that gave them second place in the UCAL. Tony Bonagura was the mainstay of the pitching staff, while Jim Lynch's bat was most potent in driving in runs. As the 1964 approaches, New Paltz can count on a complete infield and outfield to give it a grip upon a championship.
