The rock-bound coast of Maine, the palm-fringed beaches of Hawaii, the amber fields of the plains, the mighty Niagara, the moss-hung oaks of the South, the many-hued forests of New England—these are but part of the glorious beauty of our wonderful land. But America the Beautiful is deeper than all these. It is our way of life. It is our right to vote, to stand up for what we deem right. It is our freedom to worship God in accordance with our faith. It is our right to an education, regardless of our race, creed or social position. It is all these as much as the glorious beauty of our land. To you who will soon hold the future of America in your hands, I say, “Keep America beautiful.7' Frederick C. Dippel MR. FREDERICK C. DIPPEL B.Ed.; M.Ed. Supervising Principal T R A T I O IV MR. His greatest extracurricular interest was music and he has been, for four years, active in both band and orchestra. He has had the time to serve on the editorial staff of the Huguenot. He has earned his letter in golf. As a junior. Doc was elected to the National Honor Society, and as a senior became president. He was a National Merit Scholarship finalist, and on the basis of his high score, was invited to participate in the Senior Seminar. As an outstanding science and math student, he became the recipient of the Bausch Lomb Award, the most important award to math and science students. We expect great things of Doc, as his sincerity, humor and intelligence will certainly carry him to great success. SALUTATORIAN PAUL SMILEY Linda’s high scholastic achievement, quiet manner and gentle sincerity have earned the respect and friendship of her class. As a member of the National Honor Society since her junior year, she has served her school well in this organization. Her enthusiastic support of the girls’ athletic program has made her an avid and valuable participant. Linda won a three year Regents’ Nursing Scholarship and, characteristically, plans to devote her life to the care of those who most need her services. LINDA BERNER 15 ANTHONY J. KATIE EILEEN JUDY CAROL KAY KING LEE and QUEEN MARIE JANE EMILIA TRUDI THE ROYAL COURT 29 SENIOR SAGA Our tale is of four years gone by— And golden memories that we will try To keep forever within our thoughts, Those things which we so faithfully sought. As freshmen lowly we viewed these walls, Covered with ivy, standing so tall. We entered with visions of what was to come, And found that our labors had just begun. As steadfast sophomores we forged ahead— Toward inevitable victory wre were led, Until the fateful tug-o-war. When we lost the trophy by a narrow score. New Paltz Forever! The Senior march to victory. Many achievements we won that year, And soon we found our Hop was near. Our Mardi Gras was a huge success, We worked well together—oh, yes, oh, yes! Our Junior year at last arrived— We chose our rings with special pride. Six of the class to NYSSMA went. To the final concert much they lent. In musicianship we did excel, In athletics we did just as well. Our class rated high scholastically— The Honor Society chose eight for this dignity. Our Prom that spring was a gala affair. No others of old with ours could compare. Lee as King and Marie as queen Ruled with their court over a beautiful scene. That spring our class participated In things for which we were highly rated. We found that there was much to do— Valley Relays, Choral Clinic, College Boards, too. As juniors mighty we remained as a class, When into summer we did pass. To Girls’ State went Linda, to Boys’ State went Stew. They told us of many things they had learned to do. 30 At Hyde Park Others that summer did us well represent— Jamie for his essay to the UN was sent. To Central Hudson Tony did go. For those weeks they had much to show. Into our Senior year we brought Those things we’d been so carefully taught. The year we’d so long waited for Fulfilled all expectations, and much more. Three Senior officers the student government had, Lee and Eileen and, from Kenya, Thad. We led the school as all Seniors do— High goals and honors we did pursue. Mr. Streifer for the Seniors! Our class was especially proud to learn That Doc Merit semi-finalist rating did earn. And that Wade a special commendation received For outstanding scores he had achieved. And other events we will always recall— Many memories of what happened that fall. The Little Brown Jug was ours to keep— When we finally won the exciting class meet. The time drew near for our Senior Ball— We knew that it would be best of all. Our play, too, won much acclaim, And to us many praises came. Linda scores a first! Our Trip came next—we had much fun. We found that our school days were almost done. Those wonderful weeks did so quickly fly— The time had come to say Good-bye. If youth could stay with us forever These joyous times would leave us never. But our paths will lead us many ways. And each will remember these wonderful days. It sponsored dances after football and basketball games, and provided spectator buses for out of town games. As usual, of course, the Council completed a most successful Magazine Drive, and as an added social event, organized the Christmas Dance. The year’s new undertaking, the Student Store, provided a convenient place for students to purchase school supplies at reasonable prices. OFFICERS Mr. Van Valkenburg, Advisor, E.
