Girls Chorus, Dancing Club, Leaders Club, School Paper Staff, Basketball, Baseball. -S X Sf X, 'AT S CLASS HISTORY VVe climbed the steps of old New Paltz High for the first time as students in September of 1947, eager to view the school, our teachers, and of course our upper classmen. Oh, would our boys ever be as tall as those seniors? How proud we were to be in High School. The seniors helped us feel at home by giving us a welcome party. The first thing we did was to choose our class officers. Bill Rhine- hart was elected Presidentg John Tizio, Vice-Pres- identg Anita Angerman, Treasurer, and Jean Jan- sen, Secretary. John lVIcKelvey, John Tizio, and John VVeisz all won places on the J. V. Basketball team. Remember how we cheered them at the games? That was the year of the new look. How we rebelled against it. VVe just wouldn't be seen dead in long skirts. But bye and bye we be- came used to the idea and gave in to the rage. VVe survived the tests, cruel restrictions, long hours of homework, and Gum-Chewing Girls and Cud-Chewing Cows of lWrs. LaFalce and at the end of the year emerged unscathed, a little wiser, and a little older. One of the outstanding memories of our first year was our visit with Klrs. LaFalce to the United Nations, where we learned a lot about how this organization operates. VVe climbed those steps again in September 1948 but now we were Sophomores and could cast our eyes down on the Freshmen rather than be the object of such glances. lt was good to see each other again. Bill and Anita retained their offices of President and Secretary-Treasurer, but George NIcCabe newly arrived from Poughkeepsie won the Vice-Presidency. George and his brother Don became outstanding members of our class by their fine performances for New Paltz on the Basketball Court and the Football and Baseball fields. Our contribution to the social life of the school this year was our Sophomore Dance with its theme Buttons and Bows after the hit tune of the period. VVith Johnny lVIichaels Orchestra supply- ing the music our first dance as a class was a grand success. This year found more of our classmates on the various teams and activities. This was the year that lXIrs. lNIcKenna's group won the annual lklagazine Drive with Joanne DuBois leading the school in sales. September 1949 found us as Juniors with hir. lNIcKenna as our homeroom teacher. VVe again elected Bill and Anita to their same offices of Pres- ident and Secretary-Treasurer and this year John Tizio was again Vice-President. This was to he a big year for us with the tasks of choosing our class ring and planning our Junior Prom. How we haunted lllr. lVIcKenna in our anixiety for the rings and what a time we had agreeing on our Junior Prom theme. Our final choice of a theme was April Showersf' At last the big night arrived. The Gym was gayly decorated with streamers, crepe paper and flowers. The Colombians furnished the music. As a climax of the evening hluriel Riche and John Tizio were crowned King and Queen of the Prom. Soon all our planning and work was just a memory, but a pleasant one which left us with a feeling of a job well done. This was the year that our Christmas decora- tions won first prize and an ice cream party given by the Student Council. Class spirit was building up rapidly in the wake of all these accomplish- ments. Another big event of the Junior year was the National Honor Society appointments. VVhen the returns were all in it was found that Joanne Du- Bois, Faire Millham, and Louise Mertz were to represent the class in this honorary organization. After the installation a tea was given for the new members and their parents. And now at last we have reached our Senior Year. This l95l HUGUENOT stands as the current chapter of our history. VVe look forward toward graduation happy that we have nearly reached our goal but a bit reluctant to sing our Alma lklater for the last time as undergraduates of New Paltz High School.
